Quote: PERTH'S three rectangular football codes will be under threat if a $73m upgrade of Members Equity Stadium does not get the go-ahead. The Western Force has already decided to move from Subiaco Oval to cut its $3m a year losses. But debts will continue to build unless Members Equity is expanded from an 18,000 to 25,000 seater arena and there is an upgrade in all facilities including corporate boxes, players change rooms and medical facilities and lighting. Perth Glory, already based at Members Equity, said it faces an annual $1.5m loss to bring facilities up to A-League and Asian Championship requirements. And the emerging WA Reds rugby league side that is hoping for an National Rugby League club to be based in Perth said also said the NRL would need better facilities before making a decision on a new franchise. The three clubs, jointly releasing the long awaited consultants report on the future of Members Equity today, said that when competing against live broadcasts it important to have the best facilities available to attract people from their lounge rooms. Force chief executive Greg Harris said: "The upgrade is crucial to the viability of the Western Force. "It is as simple as that." He said acknowledgement by the state government that it was willing to go ahead would be a huge bonus. "We would need an indication by June this year so that preliminaries could begin,"he said. "It does not have to be included in the May budget." Perth Glory chief executive Scott Gooch said said the present stadium did not meet requirements and an uprgade was necessary to encourage a growth in sponsorship and membership. And Reds general manager Bill Nosworthy said NRL teams had been impressed with the basics of the stadium but an upgrade was important. Sport minister Terry Waldron was briefed about the report on Tuesday and would be asking the department of Sport and Recreation to evaluate and analyse its contents. "The government will then decide what it is going to do," a spokesman said. "The Premier and minister have made it pretty clear that they want to look at upgrades for Members Equity Stadium but need a fully costed option and business plans." The spokesman said Mr Waldron had also contacted the Australian Rugby Union about its commitment to the Force and the Federal Government on what funding may be available. Please make it happen. We need this stadium to be good to allow international matches to be played here in Perth. I would much rather a rectangular stadium than Subiaco Oval.

Also in today's paper it says that if WA votes no in the daylight savings referendum that the Glory's matches would be brought forward by one hour.
That would mean:
Fri 9 OCT 09 vs. Adelaide United 7.30pm would be 6.30pm Sun 1 NOV 09 vs. Melbourne Victory 5.00pm would be 4.00pm Sun 22 NOV 09 vs. Sydney FC 5.00pm would be 4.00pm Sun 6 DEC 09 vs. Queensland Roar 5.00pm would be 4.00pm Sat 26 DEC 09 vs. Newcastle Jets 5.00pm would be 4.00pm Sun 10 JAN 10 vs. Sydney Fc 5.00pm would be 4.00pm Fri 22 JAN 10 vs. Wellington Phoenix 8.00pm would be 7.00pm Sun 31 JAN 10 vs. Central Coast Mariners 5.00pm would be 4.00pm Sat 13 FEB 10 vs. Queensland Roar 5.00pm would be 4.00pm
So Perth Glory Fans vote YES!

And remember, Denilson is classed as a guest player so he isn't included in the salary cap, Recoba could be our marquee, Todd will probably be on about $150,000-$200,000 or have an additional service agreement which is what Dadi has this season. With that the club has said that they'll pay him say $40,000 (minimun) to play, but then they'll pay him maybe $60,000 to promote the club in the community. Same thing could be done for Todd and even our Socceroo. From memory, i think that you can have $500,000 on additional service agreements. Sage has probably done something like that to get the most players that he can in.

The lighter purple stripes look like they are more credible now. It's a pity, because i really liked how Perth wore the dark purple at home, in a way it was very intimidating to the visiting team. But as for the logo, i personally don't mind it, its a bit re-freshing, but then again, i'm not a Perth supporter. All the teams seem to be going for that shield badge now. One wonders if the Roar will follow suite when they officially announce the change from 'Queensland' to 'Brisbane'.

Quote:Álvaro Alexander Recoba Rivero (born March 17, 1976 in Montevideo), nicknamed "El Chino", is a Uruguayan football striker or left Midfielder currently playing for Panionios. He had played in the Italian Serie A since 1997 for ten seasons straight (apart from a six months spell with S.S.C. Venezia) with current Italian champions Internazionale; after a one-year loan to Torino his contract with the Milan side expired on June 30, 2008 and he spent last summer as a free agent. He has 69 caps for the Uruguay national team, with whom he participated at the 2002 World Cup.

Club career Recoba started his career with Uruguay's Danubio. After several years there in the youth teams, he appeared on the first team at just 16 years old and played seasons 1994-95 where he captured everyone's attention with his marvelous left foot. For the 1996-97 season he was transferred to Club Nacional de Futbol, one of Uruguay's most successful teams. The following season, he was sold to Internazionale.
Notable debut at Inter Recoba made his debut for Inter on the same day as Ronaldo (31 August 1997), against Brescia in San Siro, scoring two goals in the last ten minutes of the match: one, a powerful 40-yard shot that flew past the keeper, the next, a free kick into the top corner after a Cristiano Doni foul. The goals allowed Inter to come back and win the match 2-1. In the same season, he scored a lob from only a short distance into the opponent's half.
Loan to Venezia Despite his spectacular start for Inter, he was eventually loaned out to relegation-battling Venezia. It was there that he proved he could play at the highest level, as he was involved in the majority of the goals that the Venice side scored during his time there; he scored 11 times and made 9 assists in 19 matches. His efforts helped Venezia escape relegation that season.
Return to Inter After his tenure at Venezia, which lasted less than one season, Recoba returned to Inter. In January 2001, he renewed his contract with the club until June 30, 2006. But during the same month he faced problems with a fake passport, losing the Italian nationality he received in 1999. He was punished with a one-year ban, which was later reduced to four months on appeal.[1]
Recoba has had other notable performances for Inter, an example being the 2004–05 Serie A match against Sampdoria on January 9, 2005 in which he entered the game as a 32nd-minute substitute for Adriano. In the 42nd minute of the second half with Sampdoria leading 2–0, he hit the post. He then fed the ball to Obafemi Martins who scored to bring Inter back into the game; this was followed three minutes later by an equaliser from Christian Vieri, and in the last minute of stoppage time, Recoba scored Inter's third goal in six minutes to snatch a 3–2 win.[2]
On March 16, 2007 Recoba confirmed to SKY Italia that he wanted to leave the team at the end of the 2006–07 season citing lack of appearances with the first team.[3] He was initially linked with Inter's scudetto rivals A.S. Roma after he claimed that if the opportunity arose and Inter president Massimo Moratti approved he would join the capital club immediately.[4] On August 31, 2007 he was loaned to fellow Serie A club Torino F.C. where he rejoined Walter Novellino, his previous boss at Venezia.[5]
Torino Recoba scored his first goal for the club in the second match of the season, a 1–1 draw with Palermo, after a good combination between himself and Alessandro Rosina.[6] On December 19, 2007 Recoba gave a top-class performance against A.S. Roma in the Coppa Italia, scoring two excellent goals in Torino's 3–1 win.[7] However, his performances have been disappointing due to injuries and lack of playing time; he has not made the expected impact despite a good start and finished the season out of the starting formation.[8]
Panionios Recoba signed for Panionios of the Greek Super League on the 5th of September 2008, making him one of the clubs biggest signings in recent history. He will join former Inter team mate and close friend Lambros Choutos. He made his debut by the p.t. Fabio Martella against Aris on October 18, 2008 in a 2-1 win for Panionios F.C.. He proved his quality by assisting both goals for his teammates Maniatis and Gonzaga. In his next match, he inspired Panionios to a 5-2 away win against Ergotelis where he scored two goals, and dominated as an attacking midfielder with his brilliant passing skills.[9]
National team Recoba played for Uruguay at the 2002 FIFA World Cup and has earned over 50 caps for his country. His only goal at the tournament came against Senegal in Uruguay's final group game, but it was not enough as the match finished in a 3-3 draw and eliminated Uruguay in the first round.
In September 2005, he scored the winning goal against Argentina in a World Cup qualifier. This helped Uruguay qualify as South America's fifth placed team and put them in position to play for the intercontinental playoff against Oceania champions Australia. However, Uruguay was unsuccessful in its bid for World Cup 2006; losing 4-2 in a penalty shootout after a draw in aggregate score.
Despite the lack of appearances for Inter, he was again picked for the Uruguayan national team. This allowed Recoba to play in most of the Uruguay matches for which he was healthy. He scored his 12th goal with the Uruguayan national team in a 2-1 victory on June 2, 2007 in a friendly match against Australia.
Recoba also played for Uruguay in Copa América 2007.
Playing style Recoba's strengths are his dribbling, technique, pace and a strong, accurate left-foot shot. He is a free-kick specialist, and has scored goals of great quality, examples of which were his two goals during his debut with Inter, and basically all the goals scored during his time at Venezia.
Recoba is known for being a player who could have been one of the world's greatest, but he always seemed to fall short because of his constant injuries. He was in the 1998/1999 season the greatest player in the world but with his poor consistency, he could never hold onto that title or his salary which was the highest in the world [10]. He was perhaps summed up best in a 2003 Guardian article. The reporter commented that few, if any, have been born with Recoba's ability; however, his mentality continues to fail him at the most crucial moments - he continued by comparing Recoba with Real Madrid's Raul, whom he stated has only half or even a quarter of Recoba's ability and technique, but the mentality of a true champion. In a situation where Recoba loses his heart for the match, Raul's mentality serves only to heighten his workrate and focus his skills. As a result of this Recoba has featured as a substitute in recent seasons, though few would question his ability to turn match when he is on form. It is as a result of these particular short-comings that Recoba is unfortunately not a world renowned name in modern day football, despite having ability that few have had in the past or present.

Quote:The State Government’s rejection of plans to upgrade Subiaco Oval or develop a new multi-purpose stadium in the near future has not tempered the desire of three of WA’s football codes for an upgrade of the rectangular Members Equity Stadium.
RugbyWA, Perth Glory FC and the WA Rugby League this morning made a joint call to the State Government to inject funds into the further redevelopment of the East Perth stadium into a top-class sporting facility.
HAVE YOUR SAY: Should the government step in to keep the Force in Perth? Click here
The West Australian today revealed that a report from Melbourne-based company LEK Consulting says Perth is in danger of losing Super 14 rugby franchise the Western Force if a suitable rectangular facility is not built.
The most viable option is a $73 million upgrade of Members Equity Stadium, a redevelopment that could save the Force and provide a massive boost to soccer and rugby league in WA.
“The upgrade is essential for the long-term viability of the Western Force, it’s as simple as that,” outgoing Force chief executive Greg Harris said.
The Gallop government’s promise of a $25 million upgrade was a key component of RugbyWA’s successful pitch which brought top-level rugby union to Perth instead of Melbourne five years ago, but a suitable upgrade is yet to eventuate.
Meanwhile, the Victorian government is aggressively pursuing further tenants for its 31,500-seat rectangular stadium, which is currently under construction. A-League champions Melbourne Victory and NRL club Melbourne Storm have already committed to the Olympic Park venue and there is room for a third football team.
Harris said it would cost the WA Government comparatively little to save the Western Force in the short term and provide three of WA’s football codes with the basis of a suitable long-term venue.
“We’re not asking for $1 billion, we’re asking for $70 million to ensure that you have a pathway for young footballers of three different codes in this State to be able to play at the highest level they possibly can.
“I don’t think that’s an unrealistic expectation, especially in relation to the $300 million which the Victorian State Government are currently spending on a rectangular stadium or the $165 million which the Queensland State Government have recently spent at Skilled Park on the Gold Coast.”
While the Force are desperate for a suitable rectangular facility to satisfy public calls for a decent view of the action, which is not provided at Subicao Oval, the upgrade would also assist soccer and rugby league.
Perth Glory currently spend around $20,000 per match to meet minimum A-League ground requirements, while WARL boss Bill Nosworthy says that a top-class facility would be a key attribute in his organisation’s bid to bring the NRL back to Perth in 2012.
The Force will lose around $2.8 million this year, while Perth Glory chief executive Scott Gooch said his club would lose $1.5 million. Glory’s losses will be absorbed by sole owner Tony Sage.

Quote:Glory be - Perth in hunt for RecobaMichael Cockerill April 25, 2009 - 12:03AM ROBBIE FOWLER might not be the star attraction of next season's A-League after all - rejuvenated Perth Glory yesterday opened negotiations to make Uruguayan star Alvaro Recoba the biggest signing in their history.
The hugely gifted playmaker - well known to Australian fans from the World Cup play-offs of 2001 and 2005 - comes off contract with his Greek side, Panionios, in July, and his representatives have made it known he is keen to come to the A-League.
Perth's flamboyant owner, Tony Sage, who assumed control of the club last season after buying out his former partners, has made it clear he intends to drag the Glory back to the summit of the domestic game after four seasons of failure, and sees the signing of a high-profile marquee player as crucial to his ambitions. Sage will step up discussions with Recoba's management this weekend, with the player's wage demands likely to be about $1.2 million for a season.
Recoba, 33, would perhaps shade Fowler, who has joined North Queensland Fury, as the competition's biggest drawcard if the Glory were successful in their pursuit. The man known as "El Chino" spent a decade at Italian giants Inter Milan - with loan spells at Venezia and Torino - before moving to Greece last year, and earned 69 caps for Uruguay before retiring from international football after the 2007 Copa America in Venezuela.
Six of those caps came against Australia - starting with the 1997 Confederations Cup and ending with a friendly in Sydney almost two years ago - but despite being a huge influence in most of those games, Recoba never managed a goal against the Socceroos. Nonetheless, he is regarded as one of the few players able to rival David Beckham as a set-piece specialist, and possesses an exquisite left foot capable of opening up some of the world's best defences.
Recoba's interest in playing in Australia surfaced this week, and Perth was the first club out of the blocks. Four other clubs - Newcastle Jets, Central Coast Mariners, Wellington Phoenix and Adelaide United - are, at this stage, without a marquee player next season, but only Perth have the means to meet his wage demands.
Perth has also been talking to Brazil's former World Cup winner, Denilson, about a marquee contract, but, while that deal hasn't been ruled out, it seems Recoba has emerged as their preferred option.
Recoba's former Uruguayan teammate Richard Morales has also expressed an interest in the A-League. The nomadic 34-year-old striker, who scored twice against the Socceroos in Montevideo in 2001, has been out of football since terminating a short-term contract with Ecuadorean champions LDU Quito in February, citing his father's ill health. Morales previously spent two seasons playing alongside Sydney FC striker John Aloisi at Spanish club Osasuna.
Meanwhile, Socceroos utility Mile Sterjovski and former Sydney FC defender Ruben Zadkovich have been told they are surplus to requirements at English Championship strugglers Derby County. Sterjovski has been considering a move back to the A-League but is more likely to find a club in Asia - at least until after next year's World Cup. Zadkovich, 22, joined the Rams after last year's Beijing Olympics but has failed to make an impression at Pride Park. It is his second spell in England following stints with Queens Park Rangers and Notts County.
Sterjovski and Zadkovich have another year left on their contracts, but Derby face financial difficulties and want to offload up to 10 players from the first-team squad.
http://www.brisbanetimes.com.au/sport/soccer/glory-be--perth-in-hunt-for-recoba-20090425-ai8k.htmlPlease FFA can we introduce an Australian Marquee and an international marquee!

Question, I wonder if Rostyn Griffiths is still available, or has Adelaide United signed him proper, for this coming season? You see, late this past season he signed a short term deal for the finals only, but it was not a loan as he was released/left Blackburn, but more just a four week deal or something. We've heard nothing since, but I presume AU have signed him to a proper deal, or will soon? If they have not yet, then the boy is from Perth and would be a great pick up. He may not see much match time, not immediately anyway, in Central Midfield though, with Srhoj and potentially Jacob Burns and maybe Amaral in the squad. He'd be a great guy to have feature the NYL team too though and with his pedigree may supplant the likes of Burns sooner rather than later.

Some More News, It just keeps coming today. Quote:Perth will lose Super 14 outfit Western Force to another State unless the State Government honours a pledge to upgrade Members Equity Stadium, a report has found.
The West Australian has obtained a report by Melbourne company LEK Consulting which shows the Force are heading for a $2.8 million loss this year as fans continue to reject Subiaco Oval as a venue.
Total losses would mount to an unsustainable $17 million over the following four years if the Force stayed at Subiaco, the report said.
RugbyWA, Perth Glory and the West Australian Rugby League will this morning launch the report calling for the ground's upgrade.
http://www.thewest.com.au/default.aspx?MenuID=13&ContentID=137841More resaon to upgrade the Eastern stand, this time they should put a roof! I recokon it'll be nice, when they put the seats in to have glory written in one section in purple and orange, force written in yellow on blue seats and reds written in whatever colour they are, because they will be the three teams to use the ground.
