Todd our 20th Player Jelic maybe our 21st Severino or the like, or even Sterjovski, possibles for 22nd 23rd reserved for Marquee (Which Recoba or Sterj could be) Checked out the article in your blog, FP, hmm mentions Recoba deal again.. Hmm I'm not liking the, "We've got to find out a price, that hasn't been divulged yet, so it's still quite a long way off." (Mitchell) That's the haggling point or however you describe it. But if we don't even get there, then he/they may not have been convinced of how attractive a proposition the A-League and even Perth, are. But it's more likely he's fielding several offers, many from bigger and richer clubs in bigger and richer leagues. Lifestyle appeal FTW! BTW Is it possible Perth may be closer to Uruguay, than Greece, Turkey, Italy, Qatar and whatever places have clubs which might be interested in Recoba? (Excluding Spain, England and most W European countries) And I mean closer like, via Indian Ocean, stopping over in South Africa, like Johannesburg Airport, then en route to Montevideo? SausageMahoney wrote:anyone read this one as yet? http://www.smh.com.au/news/sport/football/a-league/european-club-influx-will-spice-up-aleague-preseason/2009/05/08/1241727604418.htmlpart relevants to us - Meanwhile, Socceroos winger Mile Sterjovski has opted to reject lucrative offers from Asia to return home to the A-League, where three clubs are vying for his signature. Sterjovski, 29, has been abroad for nine years since leaving former NSL club Parramatta Power, and had spells in France, Switzerland and Turkey before moving to English Championship side Derby County last year. Although he has another year remaining in his contract with the Rams, the club has made it clear it wants to offload its higher wage-earners. In recent weeks, Sterjovski has received offers from China, South Korea and Japanese side JEF United Chiba, but instead prefers to continue his career in Australia, not least for family reasons. For several weeks, Perth Glory and Gold Coast United have been vying for his signature, but in the past few days a third club has reportedly entered the race. Perth are considering making Sterjovski their marquee player - but much will depend on negotiations with Uruguayan superstar Alvaro Recoba, who at this stage is the preferred choice. Talks with Recoba were expected to reach a decisive stage overnight. Gold Coast already have a marquee player for the next three years - Socceroos midfielder Jason Culina - but have offered a deal that would have kept Sterjovski inside the salary cap by steadily increasing his wages over the next three seasons. Despite the attraction of playing alongside best mate Culina, it's believed Sterjovski is less than enthused by the offer. Tommycash wrote:Very interesting article there SausageMahoney so the Recoba deal is close to a climax ? and Sterj may will most likely go our way if it falls through. either way i'd be stoked. Hmm how interesting - My sentiments are essentially the same as Tommycash's - either way would be great for us. But I want to have my cake and eat it too - Under the Recoba scenario, we may well still be after Sterjovski as a non marquee too?! But with this Jelic news maybe not? -=GLoRiOuS=- wrote:bak to jelic ... there was a good article in the west today .... dave mitch and lui guiliani actually met him and watched him train in their scouting trip over europe ... energie cottbuss agreed to release him so he can play for glory and he and his wife are most likely gonna move over here with their family. Also mentioned that former Millwal and Piacenza striker Daniel Severino is currently training with us, and dave mitch is gonna look at him aswell. Daniel Severino, :o wow that's a name I haven't heard in a while. Apparently in recent times, he's been playing in the Maltese league. Hardly that impressive, but shouldn't knock it either. Guys like Paul Okon played a season in Cyprus before returning to the A-League, and I can't imagine the Maltese league being of much lower standard to them? He'd be good for our squad depth, good for the rotation. I 'think' he's early 30s now, which partially explains why he's in Malta these days and not at the former clubs mentioned by Glorious. With Jelic, he'd certainly be sufficient for us, in this league. Interesting the Australian connection too - so contract wise, he should not be a problem and we should get a few seasons out of him too, so our forward set up will have some stability in experience too - especially when Dadi leaves or retires. Yeah I'm a little suprised about Recoba ... if your going to come to Australia, and you're a big name wouldn't your agent talk to Melbourne and Sydney first (maybe he already has). I mean Perth Glory is great but if I'm Recoba's agent and I want to get the most money for my guy I'd check out over east first ...
If we signed Recoba, I would like it to be for a full-season, none of the seven-game crap...

By the way on Todd, I think he's a good buy, having some experience in defence is good but I notice he's only signed on a one-year deal which is interesting...

AFAIK the seven game stint is what you would have a "guest player" for. I don't think there's been any mention of Recoba being looked at for a guest.

Yeah, it could be he didn't want to commit long-term, but I think it's more likely Glory was being careful. He's not young and could pick up a long term injury. I'm pretty sure Dadi is on a season by season contract too?

I take that back... Quote: If Glory can't meet Recoba's pay demands for a full season, the club would still be interested in bringing the former Inter Milan playmaker in for a guest stint.

i think what really dents our guest player stint ambitions would be that the majority of games to start the season are away games so you loose the chance of boosting attendances.

if we did get a player on a 7 match stint ... which i hope not ... and much rather prefer the whole season .. i rekon it would be better to get them for the last 7 games rather than the first 7 ... at least that way if we need desperate points to make the finals at the end of the season .. that particular player can help us
yet the downside is .. if we make the finals .. we will be without him
... meh lol

Yeah if we got him on a guest stint i think they'd put him elsewhere then the first 7 games. but wwhere ? and how disruptive would that be ?

Very true. Is there anything stopping us from getting a guest mid-way, or at the end of the season? Can they play in finals games?

By the way Mitchell said a few interesting things on Let's Talk Football yesterday, details on the blog.... Also a good article on Burns on the TWG: http://theworldgame.sbs.com.au/a-league/-burns-gets-verbeek-blessing-186959/#http://theworldgame.sbs.com.au/a-league/-burns-gets-verbeek-blessing-186959/# Edited by FP General: 11/5/2009 04:19:37 PM

Quote:Homeward-bound Socceroo Jacob Burns has revealed that he received the blessing of national team coach Pim Verbeek before inking his three-year deal with ambitious Perth Glory.
A negative response from the Dutchman, a died-in-the-wool A-League skeptic, would have swayed Burns into remaining with high-riding Romanian outfit Unirea Urzicini for another season.
But, to his relief, Verbeek declared that a return to Australia for the midfielder after a 10-year European adventure – taking in Leeds United, Barnsley, Wisla Krakow and finally Unirea - would not bury Burns’ World Cup aspirations.
Verbeek has courted controversy with his criticism of the A-League - a competition he views as a far from ideal World Cup platform for his players.
But that wasn’t the message received by 31-year-old workaholic Burns, an off-the-peg stand-in for the likes of Jason Culina, Vince Grella or Carlo Valeri.
"Before any decisions were made I spoke to Pim, and various other people who have ventured back, about my intentions and he gave me his full support," insisted Burns.
"I have an option in my contract which allows me to go out on loan at the completion of my first season, either to Europe or Asia, which would keep me fit for those few months heading into the World Cup.
"That’s an important clause which Pim saw the merit in. He basically told me that he knows what I am capable of and that he will now get to see me week-in week-out.
"He said there are no guarantees, but that also applies to the players who remain in Europe. The message was that if I’m playing regularly and maintain my form and fitness, I have a good chance of going to South Africa. I don’t think I jeopardise anything by coming home.
"You don’t become an average player overnight. I think the Socceroos coaching staff appreciates my style of football and I think form and fitness will be the telling factor for me."
Burns, who played Champions League with Leeds, has been a consistent performer and proved his worth to the national team with a memorable performance as a last-minute replacement for Culina in the 1-0 win against Uzbekistan in Tashkent.
He’s made two appearances off the bench since then, but his industry and endeavour has convinced Verbeek to keep calling him up after more years in the cold than he cares to remember during the reign of Frank Farina.
With just eight caps since his debut in 2000, Burns has been just a flicker on the Socceroos radar but with South Africa so close his light is shining like never before.
"I think I have something to offer the national team. There is a lot of competition for places in my position but I think Pim sees something in me he likes and I’m just happy to be pushing for a place at the World Cup," he said.
"What’s been kept me in Europe for so long was South Africa and the World Cup dream but now seems the right time to come home."
Though he has a few kilometres on the clock, Burns’ motor still has plenty of torque and he has spent a lot less time in the body shop than some of his contemporaries.
"I didn’t want to come back with no legs, I’m still at a good age and I can help some of the young players coming through," he added.
"You see the likes of Paolo Maldini playing into his late thirties, and I think I’ve still got plenty left in the tank," he added.
Burns is also looking forward to reacquainting with Glory coach Dave Mitchell, with whom he spent his formative football years at Sydney United and then Parramatta Power in the NSL.
"We’ve had success in the past. We have a good relationship and hopefully it will be a good fit. The move came out of the blue a bit and it was too good to knock back.
"I’ve achieved a fair bit in a decade in Europe. I’ve played in the Premiership, the Champions League and three UEFA Cups.
"It looks like Unirea will be in the Champions League next season, or at the very least the UEFA Cup, and I’ve had a good year there. It’s a challenging place to be at times, but it’s a good team and I certainly could have stayed.
"But I’m really looking forward to coming home. Perth are going places and I’m relishing being a part of that."
Burns will join his Socceroos teammates in Dubai on June 1 – five days before their next World Cup qualifier against Qatar in Doha. off the myspace. interesting one.

Quote:Todd ideal tough guy for Glory
11th May 2009, 6:00 WST Perth Glory coach David Mitchell has played down concerns over nononsense English defender Andy Todd’s turbulent past, claiming the Derby County centre half is just what the A-League club needs for the new campaign. Todd, 34, will arrive in Perth tomorrow and will spend a week here to assess the merits of making a move to the A-League. He will have a medical before signing a one-year deal. A tough tackler on the field, the former English Premier League defender has had a controversial career, including a 1999 training ground incident with then Bolton boss Phil Brown and an altercation with Charlton teammate Dean Kiely two years later. But Mitchell, who watched Todd in a 3-2 loss to Wolverhampton Wanderers last month, said he had received favourable reports from a number of sources. “I’ve spoken to quite a few people and they’ve all given him glowing references as a player and a person,” Mitchell said yesterday. Mitchell also rejected suggestions the former Blackburn and Bolton defender’s aggressive approach might not be suited to the Australian league. Brisbane Roar coach Frank Farina has argued his former Manchester City and Leicester hard man Danny Tiatto gets a raw deal because of his reputation. “I don’t think he’s that sort of player,” Mitchell said of Todd. “He’s a clever player. He’s a good passer of the ball and he reads the game well. “He’s a tough nut and no-nonsense but he’s not a dirty player. “He’s tough and he plays by the rules and he’s exactly what we need.” Glory leaked 44 goals last season as they slumped to second-from-bottom and Mitchell believes Todd can help stem the tide. “We need someone who will defend, organise at the back and be really competitive,” Mitchell said. “This is all subject to him passing a medical and signing for us because he hasn’t signed yet.” Glory have strengthened their midfield with the signing of fringe Socceroo Jacob Burns, while the club is also close to securing Germany-based striker Branko Jelic. Mitchell is continuing to look for a marquee signing, as well as a possible guest player for the new season, which kicks off on August 7 away to Adelaide United.

It's all coming together. but does anyone else get the feeling this is a last stand for us. i mean looking at the ages of all the people we are bringing in(i dont count the youth recruits as real signings) this is not a squad for the future. this is a one year thing and i think it will be make or breakl for the club. if we faulter i dont know if Sage will stay. only finals will do and i expect probably semi finals is the goal for this season. but i suppose its important to keep in mind how much squads change each year so maybe this squad is built recognising that fact.

sage is a winner is business and i dont think he will leave until he reaches his goals with the glory. i do know what you mean however that this is pretty much do or die for us. i think as a fan though i can appreciate that there is a genuine effort being made to succeed this season. a few bad decisions and injuries could easily undo all this good work but hey thats football. the youth guys will come along pretty quickly i reckon specially with the class of players we have surrounded them with. all the imports minus dadi are of a reasonable age and there form permitting im sure we will see them around next season.

yeh it is make or break this season .... and the fans along with the players need to back sagey as much as possible coz he really is our new 'nick tana' so to speak.
the way the squad is looking now .... we will certainly be competitive, and we know we are strong at home .... pick up more points on the road and we can defintely make the finals.
