after denilson & recoba talks any less than a genuine star would be disapointing. the euro qualifiers end in october and belgium will more than likely not qualify so perhaps sonck will just retire from the NT

the only successful marquee's the a-league has seen is dwight yorke, juninho (was still injured most of the time), and soon to be culina and fowler. Edmundo Zura was nothing, Joel griffiths and archie thompson still pass my mind as normal players rather than marquee's.
Compared to that list, denilson or recoba or a player to match that of dwight yorke and juninho .... that would be amazing ..... but yet saying that .... since we havnt had a marquee in the past ... im seriously happy settling for just a international or former international who still plays at a high quality level of football.
For example if we signed this belgium international ... the rest of australia would be like 'who the hell is he?' .... but us glory fans would be happy coz we know with that particular players record, he would be a good addition to the squad.
I'm sure dave mitchell will definitely choose the right man for the job ...... i shall be expecting an announcement or sumthing soon on this probably this week or next week

Add Sheng ching Qu from Adelaide United in season One to that list as well and for a quarter of the cost it took to get Dwight Yorke for Sydney. Some of his goals in that season were awesome especially the one he scored in Perth in season one.

This week's blog will be about the search for a marquee... and what makes a good one. I've constructed my own little criteria to measure that, and Dwight of course comes out on top- but it's interesting to see where some of the current marquess rate.
ETA ~ tomorrow.

The West Australian today said that the Belgian international we're chasing is Emile Mpenza, and supported with a quote from Dave Mitchell, it looks like its legit. Also says we're looking at him as a marquee, as well as signing Sterj. Don't know how that could work, but if we somehow get both that would be amazing!

Surely you'd think it would be one or the other.

Yeah thats the impression I got I thought they said the Marquee was not finalised and they were still talking to Sterj, but so where other HAL clubs.

here's that article in today's west guys ...
Glory bid for Belgian takes shape Perth Glory have made contact with former Belgian striker Emile Mpenza about the prospect of filling the club’s marquee position this season. Coach David Mitchell yesterday scoffed at suggestions he had spoken to 40-year-old former Hull City striker Dean Windass but confirmed Mpenza, who played for Manchester City in 2007-08, could pull on the club’s new purple and white striped shirt next season. “We’re not sure how the marquee situation will fall but we’ve spoken to Mpenza’s representatives,” Mitchell said. “Our marquee hasn’t been arranged as yet and we are in deep negotiations with a couple of players.” Mpenza played for English Championship club Plymouth Argyle this season after spells in Germany and Belgium before joining City from Qatari club Al-Rayyan. Glory are also in pursuit of Socceroos winger Mile Sterjovski, who is being courted by several A-League clubs. Mitchell admitted his frustration at the number of players who had been linked with Glory for next season but said the club was unable to control the speculation. “There is a lot of rubbish and speculation out there,” Mitchell said. “Windass is not what we are looking for. The way he plays is a robust game and he wouldn’t suit our style. I don’t think he would be suited to the conditions here, either.”
There solves that issue for us .... that's the one we're lookin at ... Emile Mpenza

Well it is Emile then - makes sense to be looking at a pacy striker. Good to see Mitch isn't sitting on his hands waiting for Sterj to call.
Hmmm Mile or Emile, I guess I'd prefer Sterj largely because Mpenza hasn't played a Plymouth game since January.
Still, when are we going to get some more defenders Mitch!
