SausageMahoney wrote:to sumarise burns has been made captain. good choice if you ask me a DM is in a good position to bark orders and to lead by example Exactly my thinking. Although I'm surprised by the choice, thought C.Coyne would get it, I am very happy with Burns as captain - he's right in the core of the team and ALWAYS in the action, so he'll be able exercise his leadership abilities to the best he can. Also, I think taking any leadership pressure off of our defenders is great, so they have nothing else to think about but stopping goals. And I have complete faith in Dave Mitchell too, so he's made this decision carefully and particularly, I would imagine, so I'm happy with it! Tbh, anyone was gonna be better than Jamie Coyne, surely!?

Although I wanted Burns to be captain, I have a feeling it was order of elimination...
Jamie Coyne didn't do the best of jobs as leader, Chris Coyne as captain would most likely annoy Jamie and the likes of Harnwell and Dadi may not even feature as much as a guy like Jacob Burns, who seems to be one of our best recruits so far.
Excellent choice never the less.

Burns as captain is a great ecision... the likes of CCoyne, Harnwell and Todd will be natural leaders in defence anyway. Sterj will be under enough pressure as marquee plus having marquee and captain separate gives the club 2 highly marketable players instead of one. Dadi was the other choice but agree he will be probably used mainly as an impact player off the bench this season.
Burns will be the perfect leader in the thick of the action... making sure the defensive leaders are doing their job and the attacking players are working as hard as they need to.

The West wrote:State flags rugby, soccer arena
25th July 2009, 6:00 WST A rectangular stadium for rugby and soccer will be built by the State Government, potentially as early as 2012, after it rejected a Town of Vincent proposal for a $75 million patchup of Members Equity Stadium. Sports Minister Terry Waldron said yesterday that the Government would negotiate with the council, rugby and soccer authorities with the aim of having a firm proposal by the middle of next year. The plans are yet to be detailed, The Government will provide Rugby WA with a $2 million interest-free loan to improve facilities at Members Equity Stadium, where the Western Force will play next year. It is understood the Government’s preferred option is a progressive rebuild of Members Equity Stadium. The example the Government is using is believed to be the $160 million multi-purpose Skilled Park rectangular stadium on the Gold Coast in Queensland. It was built in two years and designed for rugby and soccer. It holds about 27,000 spectators and includes 100 open corporate boxes and 25 closed corporate suites, offices and associated facilities. “This Government has been a strong advocate for a rectangular stadium to meet the needs of our State football and rugby codes and I will be working to deliver that vision over the next 12 months,” Mr Waldron said. “There will obviously be a need for some interim measures to help bring Members Equity to an acceptable standard . . . and the Government will be providing a $2 million interest-free loan to Rugby WA to develop interim infrastructure. This will help the Western Force host home games during the Super 14 season and will benefit other users.” Rugby WA chief executive Vern Reid said he was delighted with the new plan. “It will be a terrific boon for rugby in WA and the Western Force and vital for our long-term viability,” he said. The Government had feared that the Town of Vincent proposal could blow out to more than $100 million without the full benefits of a new stadium and would have been complicated by the management lease that Nick Tana’s Allia Holdings has at the site. The decision will put the spotlight back on development of Subiaco Oval, which the Government has said it would not reconsider until 2011. Mr Waldron would not be drawn on the issue yesterday. The WA Football Commission has said it will ask the State and Federal governments for $300 million for the first stage of a rebuilding program at Subiaco Oval.

Sports Australia wrote:Rukavytsya presses for Socceroos spot Peter Simcox Friday July 24, 2009
Former Perth Glory striker Nikita Rukavytsya has enhanced his chances of a spot in the Socceroos’ World Cup squad, after scoring twice for his Dutch side FC Twente in front of national coach Pim Verbeek this week.
The lightning-fast striker came off the bench to add the second goal in Twente’s 2-0 win over German side Borussia Monchengladbach.
The 22-year-old former Perth soccer Club striker scored 10 goals for Glory in the last A-League season, sharing the Golden Boot award with Eugene Dadi before moving to the top Eredivisie club.
“I was surprised to hear from (Verbeek), but I didn’t let it affect me. I was just happy to get on and make an impact in the second half,” Rukavytsya told SBS - The World Game.
“If I have caught his eye, then that’s great. But this was only a warm-up game and I know that if I’m not playing regularly, then I won’t have any hope of doing enough to be selected for the World Cup squad next year.”
Rukavytsya, who was born in the Ukraine and moved to Perth at 14, and was part of the Future Glory squad in his first season, said the next year would be the most important of his life.
He hopes to be pressing for a first team spot, with Twente playing off for its first-ever European Champions League spot.
“The World Cup is close now and there probably aren’t too many spots up for grabs, but I believe that I can still get there, even though many people would see me as an outside chance,” he said.
“I’m in a country where coaches love to give young players their chance and Twente is no different.
“There’s no better country for an emerging player to learn the trade and I’m hoping to learn fast.
“I’m working hard on every aspect of my game, particularly just being more consistent and making the most of every scoring chance I get.”
With Perth Glory’s A-League campaign kicking off away to Adelaide United on August 7, Rukavytsya is tipping big things for his former side in the new A-League season.
“I’m a big Glory fan. They gave me my chance and now I think they’re well-placed for a big season in the A-league,” he said.
“The fans back there deserve some success and I think its coming.”

Quote:Government opts for $160m rectangular Members Equity StadiumArticle from: PerthNowFont size: Decrease Increase Email article: Email Print article: Print Submit comment: Submit comment Nick Taylor
July 25, 2009 09:40am THE State Government has committed to rebuild Members Equity Stadium as a rectangular dedicated rugby-soccer venue in a staged $160 million revamp.
But work will not start for at least another year while detailed plans are drawn up and negotiations are held with the Town of Vincent over the level of control the government will have.
The first step in the project that will take at least two years to complete will be to demolish the scaffold stand on the eastern side of the ground and replace it with a new state-of-the-art facility.
Change rooms and player facilities will be built into the new eastern stand with a large drive through undercroft for team buses.
The second stage will be to replace the current grandstand with the goal ends linked under one roof in the final stage.
Most of the construction work will take place out of the Super 14 season.
The government has based its plan on Skilled Park on the Gold Coast that opened in March last year and holds 27,400 spectators, has 100 open corporate boxes, 25 closed corporate suites and two 450 seat function rooms.
Short-term $2m facelift
Meanwhile the stadium will get a more immediate $2 million facelift as the home of the Western Force.
The Force will play its Super 14 games at MES from next season after leaving Subiaco Oval where crowds have fallen drastically because of appalling viewing conditions.
The club secured the $2 million, interest free loan from the State Government this week for upgraded lighting, more corporate facilities and extra general seating.
It will lift stadium capacity from 18,156 to more than 20,500. Force membership, including corporates and season ticket holders was 17,000 last season.
Upgraded lighting, particularly in the north west and south west corners on the grandstand side, is expected to cost between $300,000-$800,000.
The lighting is needed for the ``super slo-mo'' cameras used by video referees adjudicating on contentious tries.
It is not yet known what is needed but work will start next month when S14 broadcaster Fox Sports is in Perth for the Wallabies Test against South Africa at Subiaco Oval.
The stadium currently has 12 large suites catering for 240 people and seats another 240 in small open boxes.
The Force will build temporary suites at the northern end, either side of ``The Shed'' to cater for a further 180 corporate patrons.
A corporate marquee for match day functions will hold another 500 who will have seats in the eastern stand.
The final part of the make-over will be an extra 900 seats in the south east and north west corners. The main grandstand will hold only corporate members and ``The Shed'' will remain a standing only terrace stand.
The Force has said in the past that it believes the State Government should honour a $25 million pledge to help upgrade the stadium.
The former Labor government promised the money when the Perth bid for the Super 14 side was being prepared.
A $30,000 upgrade of some player facilities was carried out by the Town of Vincent for the Glory games with Wolverhampton Wanderers and Fulham.
The council estimates the stadium could be upgraded for $60-$70 million.

Skilled Park is a good model for the Glory to base their new stadium on. Modern, without being ridiculous (55k capacity etc).
I for one can't wait for Melbourne's to be done, you guys must be feeling the same ;)

I'm slightly confused - are we building a new stadium on a site next to MES, or "upgrading" the current MES on the same site? Different sources give different info on this.

That is great news. I am wondering if this new stadium's plans might include the ability to expand to 40k or so, through temporary seats or even permanent upgrading, for the purpose of hosting World Cup matches, come 2018 or 2022? I know it's far from certain whether we will host either World Cup but Perth's stadium is an issue for the WC bid, but this new stadium could be the answer for the WC scenario too, IF it can be expanded to 40k.
But once again, great news. A 25-30k stadium, modelled on a stadium like Gold Coast's Skilled Park, would be perfect for Glory, Force and even for Perth to finally host Socceroos games, after a very long absence.
BTw With Nikita Ruka' I am getting the feeling that he could 'well be' a late bolter/surprise when it comes to the World Cup squad, very much like he was when it came to the Olyroos team for Beijing. There he made the final squad, despite not featuring so often in the Olyroos' qualifiers, not as often as the likes of European based forwards David Williams and Dario Vidosic, who both did not make the final squad. Then again, if he features for Twente all season, and scores 5-10, even +, goals, then he will become a Socceroos regular, much sooner than the World Cup.

so happy this is happening and cant wait till its complete!
by the way ... when are they going to work on the stadium though to do the upgrades?
... i got a feeling it will most likely be during the glory season rather than during the western force season ... then we may have to be temporily moved would we?

I'd rather stand around a semi-pro's low-quality pitch then try watch a soccer match at Subi. I hope we dont go a season without optimal viewing.

well the force attract a higher crowd so it makes sense that construction will be during our season. we can't really complain if it wasnt for rugby being our allie we wouldnt be getting any of these upgrades. from what i believed we would still be looking at a 40k+ stadium perhaps on the east perth power station land for the WC bid on top of the MES upgrade.

I think the idea is to replicate the upgrade to Energy Australia in Newcastle, where they closed of sections for construction while still allowing spectators to view there team.

Well with the crowds we get they could easily close off sections of the stadium. buit its more likely they'll wait till the end of the season. which is kind of lame. the sooner the better i would say.

I'm hoping that using the stadium as a future World Cup host is more than considered, I hope that they factor in the foundations to future expansion of the stadium to 40-45k, like they have done for Victory's Bubble Dome. This is an article shortly after the Fulham game, Sage mentions the World Cup aspect: http://www.thewest.com.au/default.aspx?MenuId=15&ContentID=155814Quote:Sage hopes the move by Super 14 rugby side Western Force to the East Perth ground will entice the State Government to approve an upgrade of the eastern stand before a new stadium is built in the advent of Australia successfully bidding to host either the 2018 or 2022 football World Cup.
“The Premier (Colin Barnett) came to the game on Friday night and he’s very aware of the situation,” sage said.
“He knows Frank Lowy’s probably going to be successful in getting a World Cup bid up but he also knows that it’s seven or eight years away before a new 45,000-seat rectangular stadium will need to be built.
“If we can get $45-55million to upgrade that eastern stand that’ll fit 4000-5000 people under cover, that will be a fantastic start and I think it will happen before the beginning of next season for Glory.
“The good thing about it is the Western Force are with us now for the next three years and (the Government) has certain obligations to the Force as well, so we’ll be swept up into that.” Hmm This upgrade could well turn out to be a staged thing, in wider terms. With the stadium initially settling on some capacity between 25-30k, as I presume this upgrade is? When Force sell that out and/or the WC scenario pushes on for it, then the stadium could be expanded again to that 40k mark. That would be some stadium and Force would ensure it's no white elephant, while we can then finaly host Socceroos fixtures and Glory slowly creeps up in their average attendances, over the 20k mark (So 50/60% of the stadium capacity = perfect). SausageMahoney wrote:well the force attract a higher crowd so it makes sense that construction will be during our season. we can't really complain if it wasnt for rugby being our allie we wouldnt be getting any of these upgrades. from what i believed we would still be looking at a 40k+ stadium perhaps on the east perth power station land for the WC bid on top of the MES upgrade. Are you sure? With all the money spent on MES upgrades combined with the AFLs demands for some hugely expensive new stadium at Kitchenor or what have you, would govt. etc.. be prepared to build a new, even larger rectangle venue? With this degree of investment, almost equivalent to the money one would spend on an entirely new venue, because they essentially are, I don't see them suddenly turning around going 'and sure, we'll build another 40k rectangle venue, nearby.' I'm hoping, well if they're smart, they will, factor in future capacity upgrades to this 'New MES' to lift it to 40-45k, when the need/World Cup comes. With the crowds Force could draw medium term, expansion may even be needed, without the World Cup, depending on how large this new venue is (25-27k?). If the figure I have in brackets is around right, then that may still be too small if Force sell that out. The Western Force averaged 30k spectators first Super 14 season. Back to football how do you think our team will go in regards to depth. i mean we have some great experienced guys and a lot of promising youths but not too many midway fellows. apart from last years squads members that is. do you think this gamble on the two extremities will pay off?

I think it will work - Jukic is quite the talent and has apparently alrady showed some very promising signs in pre-season matches. Jukic while he lacks A-League experience, at 22 he is not all that young either, in relative terms (He's 2 years older than his fellow NYL team promotees Skorich, Fondyke and Griffiths). Scott Neville has already had a taste and will be really pushing Jamie Coyne, Jimmy Downey and whoever else who may be challenging, for that RB spot. Neville may be young, but he's ready. James Downey may be 21 goin 22 this year, but unlike Jukic he's been with the senior squad since the 07/08 season - This will be his third season with Glory. I know he's had some injuries, but he still has not impressed enough, to secure a regular place in the first team, so far. Downey's contract expires end of this season and one can see this season is his last chance. With three Queensland sides now, I could see him returning there. Sekulovski and Howarth wil be battling hard for LB, but in pre-season I think Mitch has also tried Jamie Coyne at LB. If he does go Coyne for that possie, then not only will Neville get a good chance to be regular RB, but you have a bit of experience waiting in the wings, in Sekulovski and even Howarth. Howarth is one of those 'midway fellows' I guess, mid-20s, looking to crack into the A-League for the first time. Griffiths is a well regarded young talent and will also be pushing for the LB and CBs. So we now have a bit of depth there. The GKs may be young but both have exp and both will be fighting hard for #1. Plenty of competition should = good standard, in theory. Velaphi broke through to be #1 last season, with two older GKs on their way out. But with the return of of more experienced and svelt Vrteski, he has a strong challenge on his hands. Scott Bulloch could be another considered to be a 'midway fellow' - he will be about the traps, a bench, squad option. He will be important comes injuries as he can slot in out the left or up front, like he did last season. But with a full strength side, 'in theory' he helps keep pressure on the likes of Sikora, Jelic and Pellegrino. Harnwell could, dare I say, almost be considered a 'midway fellow' these days too. Tood and Coyne will be infront of him in the CB rotation and he won't be required in a full strength striking set up either. But he will once agan be super sub and he wil be important once/if Todd and/or Coyne suffer injuries. He relly functions to provide us alot of depth, with the options he brings and just that passion and commitment he can bring, once he comes on. So he will be pushing those infront of him, for sure. The only real area where we are quite young, depth wise, is the midfield/central midfield. Behind Burns and Srhoj, Jukic and Fondyke are the next CM options. Though with an adaptable squad, guys like Pellegrino, Sikora and maybe Bulloch and in Mitch's eyes, Jamie Coyne, can slot in there. Depending on our formation though, if we have a diamond midfield then a Sterjovski, Jelic or even Sikora could end end front of that diamond, so Burns the DM and Srhoj on the bench. Though an injury to Burns and/or Srhoj and suddenly we may be calling on Jukic and even Fondyke a bit. But as I suggested before, Jukic atleast seems a gem and could really shine. lol That seems my full squad analysis, hopefully I'm proved right. :p Edited by GloryPerth: 29/7/2009 04:22:48 AM
