I don't but just the constant banging on about it by my family (ironic since we are Italian) and the media is pretty annoying for me.

They said that I've brought shame to the whole family, and my ancestors would be turning in their graves right now etc etc. No, not really. Just got the whole "we're not disappointed in you, we're just sad for you that you didn't get it because you have so much potential, but uni will be fantastic for you blah blah blah" speech.

I know this sounds so cliche'd, but as long as you gave it your all, no-one can expect any more, which is why your family took it better than you were expecting.

I know I was and there were a lot of people in my year like that as well. I definitely could have studied harder. In the end, I was really happy with my atar, but I know that I could have worked harder and got a higher score.

You look back at those final few months of high school and you criticize yourself so much. "Oh, If only I hadn't gone to that party, should have stayed home and studied". But all in all, the HSC or whatever the NZ equivalent is, it's just a piece of paper with your name on it, that's all. There's a big wide world out there with countless opportunities out there for you to take with both hands and make the most of. Remember also, it's not about pleasing your parents anymore. You're an adult, it's your life. It's your choice with what you want to do with it. If you're worried about their opinion and attitude, what you need to do is be the best person you can be. Make YOU happy, and if they see you're happy, they'll be happy. I honestly don't think there's too many people out there who are 100% pleased with their end-of-school exam marks. I know I certainly wasn't. Mind you, my year was the first of the ATAR change, and due to the changed system I fucked up royally. But I managed to get into a good course at Uni, and I'm thriving in the experiences I've come across since. Quite frankly, I think the best people in society are those who didn't get what they wanted first time round, then worked hard to achieve their goals.

It's not like "Oh noes, I didn't get straight excellences and I could've studied for 5 hours each day instead of only 4, I am such a failure!". I pulled a couple of all nighters right before the exams to try and get a bit of revision in, but at the time I was just so over everything that I just couldn't be bothered putting the effort in. I'm not whining about not doing as well as I had hoped/imagined - I probably got better marks than I should have.

See, I was the jerk that just goofed around for most of the year and just crammed at the end and ended up beating all my mates who studied ridiculously hard throughout the year, whilst I was ecstatic with the score I got, I did feel a bit guilty. I was sort of fortunate though, in that I only studied English and Humanities subjects so the extent of my study was making sure I had plenty of quotes, dates and events memorized for essays.

I used to be like that, not bothering to study, and still getting the marks, but I'm not as smart as I was.

The notion that you're pegging what happens for the next 40-50 years of your life on 8.5 months that take place when you're 18 is...well, completely fucking insane.

The one thing that still Grinds My Gears about Year 12 still to this day is the attitude teachers take towards the HSC. I mean yes, don't get me wrong, it's important to do well in your exams, as it does give you an advantage as to where you want to take your life, however at the end of the day, it's not the be all and end all if you don't do as well as you had hoped. Teachers give this impression that if you fail your end of school exams, or do poorly in them, or not get into Uni, you may as well just start hanging the noose from the ceiling. That, or you're going to be a Centerlink dependent for the rest of your life with the best job you'll get is cleaning dishes at a cheap restaurant, or flipping burgers at McDonalds. Some of the most successful people are those who never actually finished school.

WGMG: My friend's ex being a dick to her. And then somehow weasling his way into the state athletics 400 metre final, even though he missed the heats. And he beat my friend in the final, even though he had no business being there. Scumbag.

Shouldn't running be about who's fastest, not who's best at bureaucracy? The heats were on Thursday and the final on Friday, he got back from a holiday on Thursday. He's friends with some of the guys from Athletics WA, and he just told them "Oh, I didn't know the heats were yesterday, I only just found out, I thought they were tonight and then the final was afterwards". They had 8 people qualify the previous night as a few people had pulled out and had told everyone it would be just those 8 in the final. But then put him in as well.

I was lucky to go to a school where the teachers knew that Year 12 exams weren't that important in the scale of things. A lot of them were keen to emphasise that whilst they were a big deal, the important thing was to remember that your life isn't determined by how well you do in exams.

This is part of the private school package. They're there to provide the utmost educational experience for the individual. It's part of the service they get for the fees they pay.
