He wasn't trying to 'steer his way out of that'. When you lose both your front wheels like that, you're fucked. He'd have still been going into that corner at nearly 150km/h, and he's trying to keep the car as straights as possible. He loses the back end naturally when he hits the corner of the apex. It's Sebastian Buemi driving for Red Bull's sister team Torro-Rosso. It's lucky the run off area is so large. I'm trying to remember what race that was. Shanghai '10? Or is that Nuremberg? Either way, the mechanics back at the pits would have been in for a very big spray. To have both tires "explode: off the car like that, both front-wheel mechanics would have had to not put the wheel not on properly. You can see just before they fly off, that he hits a bump in the road. It's amazing that such a small bump could cause that.

It would have had nothing to do with how they put the tire on the car but how they designed the arms. The force from braking caused struts in the arms holding the wheels to catastrophically fail. Things like that happen a lot when you are trying to cut down weight and dimensions to go faster and you get your calculations slightly wrong.

Wrong and wrong. He attempted to channel the car into the parallel wall to slow the car down a little, so he's not hitting the end of the run-off at 150km/h. He was praised for his presence of mind to do that at the time. As for the wheels. It was the suspension support giving way under breaking. Nothing to do with the tires. The brake bias in the front has been too high and the suspension too rigid for the speed at which he was braking from.
