I think I'll start doing a weekly post in this thread about movies I've watched on Netflix.

This week I watched Lars Von Trier's Nymphomaniac Vol I.

A lot of people have written this off as "Porn justified with a little bit of story", but I think it's grossly unfair to what I think Von Trier is trying to do. Of course he's being provocative and there is a lot of gatuitous sex, but he's also telling a story of exploration, exploitation and vulnerability worth listening to.

It's quite stylised, even for a Von Trier movie, and I found myself a bit annoyed at the tone of the narration which played out like a woman reading a novel rather than the intended sharing of stories between two humans in a mutually fascinating chance connection.

Even though she's only in it for a short time, Uma Thurman completely steals this movie with her performance.

It's definitely incomplete, so I will withhold a rating until I've seen Vol II.

Did you make your wife watch it to learn how to sammich?

:lol::lol::lol:

We split the cooking fairly evenly but I think I lay more of a claim as the chef of the house, so I did a bit of research into making Cubanos and will probably do it some time. I've never had one but they look unreal.

My mouth was watering the whole time watching that. We're starting to get a little bit of a foodie truck culture happening down here in Melbourne, but still early days.

I'm always in awe of the way chefs describe experiences around food, there's a great docco series called Mind Of A Chef that explores that element. I wish food hit me in the same ways, as much as I enjoy it I just don't feel the same pop that foodies project.

I'm fairly sure my taste buds were doing backflips when I saw the slow-cooked meat in the Texas scene. Not only was my mouth watering, my eyes were too!

David and Margaret to retire from the ABC

Granted there are a lot of "bros" out there wont touch most of what David and Margaret endorse, not to sound condescending but im sure most people here want explosions, super loud noises on a hoyts blockbuster, T and/ or A

But David and Margaret would show the right path as to which movies were actually worthwhile, and for people who have a brain for people who are tired of seeing the same things over and over again, and / or watch something that's going to make us think, not watching movies which are spoonfeeding us mindless dross, then David and Margaret were a good entry point into that

I would never expand my mind to watch something as rich as a film by Michael Haneke and films with no good looking people :-$ . but I suppose everyone wants to see boobs and bromances

Lets hope whoever replaces David and Margaret will continue their agenda in a dystopian, disorderly society

I love this movie, te Soundtrack is killer too. when you buy it, it comes with the recipe to cook the Cuban sandwich from the film!

Yeah, I think since watching the film I've listened to the below almost daily. Such an awesome New Orleans sound!

After watching the movie I went onto bakespace website and found the recipes. I'm actually (attempting to) making cubanos this weekend!

So the guy who made the meals in the Chef movie put the recipes online, on bakespace. So last night I marinated the pork how the recipe told me to and this morning I cooked it, then for lunch made cubanos exactly to the recipe. And my word - they are the greatest things I've tasted. Well worth the effort!

On The Road is pretty good. Book is better but Hedlund played Moriarty very well and Kristen Stewart was actually hot

He was a man of specific quirks. He believed that all meals should be earned through physical effort. He also contended, zealously like a drunk with a political point, that the third dimension would not be possible if it werent for the existence of water.

Took the munchkin to see The Boxtrolls yesterday, and was really impressed with it as a film.

For me, it was great because it was so many things at once without diluting too much (ie: not a jack of all, master of none).

There's some great gross out humour, a heart warming redemption story that poses good morals for kids, some great metaphors that pose good post-film discussion and learning points as well as plenty of adult language that is at times quite reminiscent of old Monty Python's Flying Circus skits.

It's also a stop-motion technological masterpiece, with a fantastic kudos to the animators during the credits.

Well worth seeing.

Sorry for the lack of links yesterday, I was on my phone and it was more trouble to get them than worth. When checking out these recipes, just take note the unit of measure (pounds, farenheit, etc) and adjust accordingly.

Hahaha people raised that point at the time, but it flat out makes no sense
If they had saved him by going back in time then why didn't they save Jean ect? Literally one of the most massive plot holes i've seen in an A-Grade movie!

I'll have to go back and watch the whole series again, but I remember being impressed that they managed to pull together a good film in the same universe and erase the shitfest of X3. I remember the professor thing not being a plot hole, but I can't remember why off the top of my head.

Yeah, go back and watch it. I'm quite confident that number 3 and DOFP cannot exist together despite wolverine receiving flashbacks to scenes from that movie.
There's just no way the professor should be alive in the future that I can work out.

From faint memory I seem to remember something about the Professor having a twin brother that Charles transferred his whole being to via his psychic powers, and that was the explanation for it.

In the credits of Xmen 3 you see a coma patient who suddenly speaks in Charles' voice, but if that is the link it was never explained in the films... bit of a cop out

That'd be like Peter Jackson changing Faramir to Boromir and then just not explaining how he came back from the dead in the film before letting fans online make up some bullshit 'brother excuse'

I said couldn't walk... but i meant in the future when he is wheelchair bound. As in at the beginning of the film. If he transferred to his twin's body, he should have been able to walk, should he not?

Charles's twin brother was in a car accident and was left disabled. Or he just likes to ride in the wheelchair and get the sympathy

This whole thing reminds me too much of how Beerfest replaced LandPhil mid-movie
