Let it go, man

I watched Frozen without hearing the hype, and loved it. I think peoples expectations largely determine how much they enjoy it.

Foolem - saw the lego movie last week too, loved it! Everything is Awesome! My nephew nearly died when he saw the IRL lego in the basement, he's so jelly

One of my tutors has been really recommending David Lynch's films to me so I've watched Blue Velvet and Lost Highway over the last few days and absolutely loved them, Mulholland Drive is next. Lynch seems bat shit crazy but his ability to create genuinely disturbing heart in mouth type suspense is amazing.

pv4 wrote:
Went to see Noah last night. I loved it. But I went with a bunch of people from church, and they honestly ruined it for me when we discussed it afterwards. (I wouldn't consider these spoilers, so don't get worked up if somehow you didn't know this but were still keen to see it) Basically, the people I went with could have sat in there, saw the rock-monsters, left the movie, and had the same view of the movie in general. All I heard them say afterwards was "so they took the idea of a flood, they took the idea of an ark filled with animals, and they used names from the bible, and that is the ONLY way in which it aligns with the storyline in the bible. The messages don't even align, and there were so many innacuries it made the movie shit". I call horseshit on that. I straight up asked them "OK, if you disregard the rock-monsters, disregard the fact that Methusala (sp) wasn't around then, and disregard the fact that the number of people on the boat wasn't aligned to the bible (apparently because the two younger sons didn't have their wives with them was a major story changer that affected their views on it majorly) - what is the central theme, the message, that the bible attempts to give from/about the Noah story, and what was the central theme/message the movie gave? If you get it down to bare bones, and ignore the Hollywood-ification of the movie, what is different between the two?". For ages they umm'd, ahh'd, and barely answered. My mrs was in my court, she agreed with me, but she was trying to stay neutral so answered the question as best as she could. The group came to the conclusion that the story in the bible was to show that God wanted to restart the world, as he did many times before Jesus, and that Noah was under his every command and did what was told of him - so the message was to trust in god that his decisions are what is best, and always listen. TBH I've barely looked into the Noah story (well properly, at least) and can only assume a group of bible-studying young adults at least drew a conclusion about a story that is slightly accurate, so I'll assume that message is what the bible tries to give. That message is exactly the same as what the movie showed FFS! One of the harshest things they critizised was how mean/angry/murderer-esque Noah was portrayed - that was how they showed that he was under Gods command, doing exactly what was told of him regardless of how he personally felt. Some didn't like the fact that Methusala (sp?) was there - he only strengthened that message, by showing that while there is good in the world it was ultimately up to Noah, under the guidance of God (or The Creator, as said in the movie) to make the decisions. Apparently Noah in the movie working out what he needed to do via going to Methusala was a complete disgrace, as opposed to God just telling Noah in the Bible - who cares, the movie would have been shitter if it wasn't Hollywood-ed up. And the rock-monsters - without them, there's no fight scene. Without them, there's no heartwarming moments. Without them, the movie is worse.

My group came to the conclusion that the movie is only detrimental to "the christian cause" because it so wrongfully portrayed the story, and if you're going to tell stories from the bible they have to be as-written or not told at all. I call horseshit - there's no such thing as bad press. There'll be a bunch of people who will at least enquire into looking more into the bible now, to see how accurate/innacurate that story was as well as find others that were as crazy, interesting, etc as the Noah one.

Also I had to  at the stab at Creation vs Evolution that movie had. There was a scene where they kind of had a massive fxxx you to Creation, by pretty much showing evolution from a fish through to a human. I am the worlds biggest fan of evolution (for reasons that I think are obvious) and all I did was laugh at what was quite clearly a severe amount of butthurt around the globe when that scene happened

TL;DR - they mustn't have an appreciation for Emma Watson. \:d/

She (and Rusty) are the only reasons I'd go see that movie lol

Finally saw Cloud Atlas, fantastic movie, even Hugh Grant was good

He was a man of specific quirks. He believed that all meals should be earned through physical effort. He also contended, zealously like a drunk with a political point, that the third dimension would not be possible if it werent for the existence of water.

Watched Flight again last night. 2nd time watching, god Denzel Washington is so good. One of his best. Even though he's guilty as all hell, and probably wouldn't have been able to save the plane sober, you still feel sorry for him, yet proud of him for beating his demons when he does.

Also caught Elysium with Matt Damon. Basically Blood Diamond meets District 9. Not a bad time filler.

Finally got round to watching the second Hobbit movie. I wanted to like it but I really felt it was unnecessarily long and it dragged. That being said the next one should be good. I think it would have been better in 2 parts rather than 3.

Flight was great right up until that ending. It cheapened the whole film for me. I've known may addicts in my days high functioning and the down right belligerent.
neither type at that moment would ever sell their freedom for the memory of a dead girl. I'm not saying that they wouldn't reform but seriously unbelievable ending for a film that was so great.
Lynch is fantastic, Lost Highway is one of my favourite tripped out films of all time. Mulholland Drive is a strange tale that I don't think even after 10+ years I have ever been able to resolve. well worth watching straight then bent. Just for perspective

Watched The Hurricane the other night, for about the 1000th time.

Was pretty much brought up on Bob Dylan, and so the story of Ruben Carter was definately a big one in our family. So the news of Carter passing away the other week has hit pretty deep. I wouldn't be surprised if my old man & I watched The Hurricane once a month, it is definately one of our all-time favourites.

Watched this last night.

I was the same - didn't expect much, but enjoyed it.

In saying that, I was extremely let down by the ending - thought it was a rubbish way to finish it off.

Also thought there were a heap of things I thought they could have done differently:
- they should have made the brother a divergent too, and made him something of an "inside man" in the smart group.

- they didn't touch on the fact that in dauntless, the black group, there were no old people. could have done something with that

- they didn't show what the fence could do, and barely scraped the surface of if there was anything actually outside of it. could have made for an epic storyline.

- i thought they should have ended it by showing them all finally having fought the internal war, and then just shown a bunch of whatever was outside of the fence running towards the city, and just have all of them start gearing up for an external war. could have set up a pretty cool number 2. like I said, I was bitterly disappointed with the ending how they did it and can't help but think it could have been way better.

- why wasn't one of her fears in that dream state actually being caught out as a divergent?
Honestly didn't know there was a book. The extent of my knowledge of the movie was "it's like a futuristic Hunger Games"
Yep, to me they just made the brother in the movie seem too weak and useless. Would have much preferred if he used his smartness of being in the blue group to cover up the fact he was a divergent, and to be pretty useful to her. The way they kind of rushed the Dad's (and even an extent the Mum's) death plus just kind of cast aside the brother as crying for a bit just seemed shit and pointless to me TBH.

Knowing he told her about the serum in the books makes me a bit sad because TBH the way they introduced it in the movie seems a lot shitter now - "oh look, they move these crates of serum every morning. Weird, huh?".

Another thing - they needed to play up Four & Marcus (?) thing more. They massively rushed it at the end and it seemed pointless in the end to me
That looks good. Will have to check it out. Big fan of Jake Gyllenhaal, too.

The Godzilla movie looks sick, too. Can't really tell from the trailer, but from what I make of it, Scientists did weird things to creatures and now they're rampaging all over the world, and it's up to the ever indestructible U.S Military to sort it out?

It's so bleak too, I was really intrigued by Gyllenhall's character, there were hints of some sort of mysterious back story to him that were never developed but nonetheless he was a great character imo.
