Freedom of speech isn't freedom of consquences "Freedom of speech isn't freedom of consequences" - people keep making that statement but what does that actually mean? Not having a go at you here (and definitely not defending Gunn), but trying to work out what people are intending when they state this. To me it feels kinda vacuous. Because if that is our definition of free speech then technically every person ever has had free speech, they just have to suffer consequences. To go all reductio ad absurdum, you could say people under ISIS have free speech it's just they don't have freedom of consequences. Now we all agree this is a ridiculous example, but in doing so we've admitted that the saying doesn't actually work. Consequences do affect your freedom of speech. What we instantly arrive at then, is what consequences are we willing to allow, and what speech are we willing to apply these consequences to. And then the problem arises that this is now a subjective, not objective issue. (And my big concern with that is, in such a subjective situation, it will likely be the majority opinion that determines which speech is allowable and which can be fire-able, and so fails to protect the minority views that our concern with free speech is all about). Not trying to start an argument here nor am I saying all speech should be free from consequences (balancing competing rights is a complex topic), but genuinely trying to understand what people think that statement contributes to our understanding of free speech. Edit: the potential response to the silly ISIS example is you could say they are a form of quasi-government and so a minimal definition of free speech as just being about government does apply here. Nonetheless, we still have the question of which speech is government allowed to punish and which punishments are allowed. And in a democracy, it instantly becomes majority rule again.

Which is exactly what DCEU need lol. -PB It needs quality film-making and writing backed up fully by studio support. Snyder lacked the studio support. Now we're left with half-arsed Marvel rip-offs with quips everywhere, films with purposefully high contrast and plots about as inspiring and meaningful as a Love Island relationship. Don't even get me started on Shazam. That trailer was about as interesting as watching flies fuck.

Forgive me, I just took a break from critiquing Max Stirner's theories on psychological egoism and his relative place in broader Marxist thought to enlighten you all on the fall of modern cinema for the sake of the common denominator. I'll return to watching footy and the Tinder game shortly.
