I think Koscielny and Mertesacker both have the individual qualities of a disabled donkey but as a partnership, they work really well together and are very solid. To be fair to Koscielny though, he has improved a lot since arriving.

They have played important roles in a few titles.

I know we always rate our players higher because we watch them more than other teams, that's natural but it's amazing how many people don't rate Evans. He has been United's best defender for the past 3 or so seasons. He is our best ball playing defender too, that included Rio's time at the club.

No I rate Evans, he's just not as good as Mertesacker or Koscieleny.

I forgot that United fans don't believe in stats if it goes against their opinions, because obviously their opinions are worth more than actual legitimate facts.

Stats show what a player does, not what he doesn't do.

No doubting they can give an insight into aspects of a players game but to judge a player on his stats is pretty stupid. It's not moneyball.

For example, if defender A is playing and his team are dominating the game and he only has to make one tackle but defender B is under the pump and makes 10 tackles. Is defender B better because he made more tackles?

I agree with you to an extent, but you're taking a very narrow view of it. You obviously can't use stats to form a judgment or opinion based on one game, it's just not possible for obvious reasons. They're meant to be used over a period of time/games when things generally balance out.
