Liverpool have completed a move for Luis Suarez
Liverpool Football Club announced this afternoon that they had agreed a fee of up to 26.5million Euros with Ajax for the transfer of Luis Suarez, subject to the completion of a medical.

The Club have now been given permission by Ajax to discuss personal terms with the player and his representatives.

FTW! I'm gonna wait til the transfer window officially closes before making judgement, but spending 20m for Suarez is an amazing sign of ambition from the new owners.

Now, I'm hoping it's not pre-emptive deal based on selling a Torres or whoever now or in the Summer. If they continue to target at least 1 world class player in this price range per transfer window, I think we'll be back contending quite soon.

well, it's 22m, it's marginally more than we spent on Torres. If money = quality it would be a good sign, but everyone remembers Keane...

It's a positive statement of intent that they're willing to throw 22m at Ajax for the lad and hopefully he can continue his fine form in into the EPL.

The other flipside of this is that Torres could be on the way out. Mind you, with the lack of striking depth currently at Liverpool that seems highly unlikely.

All I saw was this:

http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2011/jan/28/fernando-torres-chelsea-transfer-liverpool

No quotes, no sources. Certainly it's out of nothing except a Chelsea bid. Chelski are panicking and offering big money to try and close the gap they've created... you know, because you can't just spend your way to the title. Why would Torres want that bid entertained now? How much of this is agents talking shit and hopeful thinking to start the rumour mill whirling from Chelsea sources?

http://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/liverpool-news/local-news/2011/01/28/liverpool-fc-agree-fee-with-ajax-for-striker-luis-suarez-100252-28074598/
http://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/everton-fc/everton-fc-news/2011/01/28/liverpool-fc-tell-chelsea-to-forget-it-after-receiving-bid-for-fernando-torres-100252-28072138/

And you know, looking to leave now - well, after everything that's been said in the past year or so by everyone, including Torres, then it's hard to imagine him leaving without having a sense of loss and treachery rising to the surface.

End of the season? We'll see. But we're still in Europe, so. I think no less than 50m from Chelsea. This is the kind of stuff that increased bids are made of. What's his agent's percentage? :P If Suarez can come here because he's scared of not getting CL footy at Ajax, then I have no doubt that Torres can have a little faith in us.

...and Liverpool have rejected it.

Well, okay, so we reject his transfer request and he starts playing like shit because he can't go to Chelsea. So we bench him. We use Suarez instead, we carry on paying his money and he gets benched and held out of first team games for as long as possible.

He has a contract. There's a reported 50m exit clause, but no one has yet to offer that and apparently that clause only applies at the end of the season.

And Torres won't help Chelsea anyway. If Chelsea can't help themselves with what they have now, then there's no helping Chelsea.

I think you have to be magnanimous about this stuff, really, but there's options open to scuttle Torres and treat him like shit if he wants to turn his back on us. After all, we didn't fuck him off when he was out of form. Why does he think he can fuck us off when he's back in form?

Thank fuck we've made a signing. Phew.

As others have already said, it's a good sign of intent from the owners. A bit of a downer that Torres wants out, but I cant see him leaving this late into the window. Hopefully he'll like what he sees between now and the end of the season and he'll be keen again next season.

There are some risks with this signing, and there have been cases of players who have lit up the world cup then flunked when signed with a big team/big comp etc. Having said that, I dont think its quite fair to compare him to Man U's Forlan signing. Suarez is playing great in a fairly reputable league already, so there should be less of a transition for him.

Anyway, prmoising times may await. It'll at least be interesting to see how this all goes. As for next season, we really need to get 2 players in the back 4 as I'm not convinced by any of them. Kelly looks capable, but he should really be slowly blooded into the side and not just thrown straight into the deep end.

To be fair though, even when he was out of form, we were more out of form, and there was still a great deal of interest in him from some other big clubs.

Isn't there a 50 million leave clause in Torres' contract?:-k

I don't think those things were unrelated.

30m and Sturridge? Not sure we want Sturridge. We'll take Bosingwa or Alex. :D

I have no issue with him going to Chelski - I don't dislike them.

Shiiiiit.

Had a bad feeling that the Suarez deal was only bankrolled because Torres was going. That would make it 4 or 5 of the past transfer windows leading to a profit for the owners, that's nowhere near acceptable.

We're a top line coach and 3-4 top players away from contending again, that's NOT that difficult to turn around in a year, if we get some cash for our rubbish - Aquilani, Konchesky, Maxi, say 30m and the owners are willing to spend another 30m. 60m can easily get you those match winners to go along with Torres, Gerrard, Suarez, Reina.

I'm very angry with him.

Is it worth the money just to keep him on the bench? Fuck his first team chances up. Let him go in Summer with 6 months on the bench. Returns in August with 8 months out and without European football even in the Europa League. You want to treat us shabbily, we'll show you how shabbily we can treat you.

Of course, that won't happen. Players who've left, leave, and that's that, but it's not the same as Yossi to Chelsea, is it. It's supposed to be a star player who committed to the club, but now his head's turned by money - like he needs to earn more - and the idea that the grass is greener.

The most sensible option would be to ask for 50m in cash and players. Sturridge isn't valuable or good enough as a sweetener - 4m, max - so we'd want someone else who's looking to leave Chelsea as well as Sturridge, or instead of him. Forward isn't the problem, hasn't been the problem. I'm starting to wonder whether or not the Suarez thing was so important because these feelings have been voiced before. A defender would do from Chelsea, but that's not likely. Richard Dunne had an approach from us yesterday, but he's not available, so I think there's other centre-half targets in mind.

But the Torres situation will need to be done before Sunday so any other options for signings like Adam to be still feasible.

The fact that it is with days to go, and it's to CHELSEA. It's because we loved him so much, and he just wants to up and leave in the middle of the season, just as his form, and the clubs, is turning.

Yes, well, like I said in the other thread - it's about loyalty and understanding what it means to honour your commitments to us. Not running off to a team in fourth and ten points off the top of the league because you think they might have a better chance.

Careers end like that without major trophies. He makes the bed, he can lie in it.

This. You stick by a player when he's injured and out of form. You build his reputation to one of the best in the world in his respective position and he turns around and metaphirically flips the club and the fans the bird? Are you fucking serious? It happened with Mascherano and now Torres too? How much of a pretentious wanker can you fucking be?

It makes me so angry. Where's the loyalty? Where's the honour? Why are the players constantly being protected, but no the clubs? This game makes me sick.

Stop shit-stirring Guest. You'd be the same if Sunderland were offering to double Andy Carrolls salary.

I just dont see how you could build so much hate for Chelsea, as a liverpool player, and then move there.

And yeah hes had all up a great 1.5 seasons with us. Hes been paid to nurse injuries for the rest of his Anfield career though.

Ive always thought Drogba was a better striker than Torres.. id trade for that + 20m.

Liverpool and Chelsea have met in a lot of important matches while Torres has been around and hes also scored in a lot of them. hes also been hacked to bits by players like John terry.. you cant play in a derby match like those without having some animosity towards the other team.

Drogba couldnt cope with being on the same team as Torres. Drogba is getting on and im not sure he has much longer left at Chelsea regardless off this Torres speculation. If Torres did join them then Drogba would kick up a stink.

Guest takes so much delight in other clubs falling apart because he thinks that if other clubs can do it then it's not that Newcastle were incredibly shit - it must be a fact of football.

You'd think that a guy who'd seen his club relegated two seasons ago would be a little more tactful, you know, like Benjamin. Maybe then he'd get half as much respect as Benj.

Torres may have had a good 1.5 seasons total with us, but that doesn't change that in a team lacking an x-factor he's one of the few players who can turn a game on its head in the space of five minutes.

If Chelsea upped their offer to over 50m, given Torres' attitude, I'd say take it and trigger Aguero's release clause at Atletico.

I think you have to be magnanimous about this stuff, really, but there's options open to scuttle Torres and treat him like shit if he wants to turn his back on us. After all, we didn't fuck him off when he was out of form. Why does he think he can fuck us off when he's back in form?

 Built his reputation. He was already considered one of the most deadly strikers in the world at Atletico ffs.

Maybe it isn't the players, maybe the fans need to realise that Liverpool are going through a phase of rebuilding and won't be challenging for anything any time soon with Man City and Spurs having overtaken them in the top 4 race and even Sunderland look better than them. For any player at the moment all those teams are a step up and to get angry because a player wants to further his career is just sad.

He was considered one of the most deadly strikers in spain, at Atletico. Everyone wanted to see if he could replicate that outside of La Liga.

Sunderland are playing decidedly average. If you watched out last three games, we've been playing excellent football. As I said, if we'd beaten Blackpool and Wolves, we'd be in contention for the Champions League still. So to say that we're in a 'rebuilding phase' because of two games just goes to show how off with the faries you actually are. Hell, if two bad results is enough to go through a 'rebuilding phase' then every team except Manchester United is going through it.
