He's had 2 bad tests. He averaged above 50 with 3 Half Centuries in 4 innings in the tour of india just prior to this. He scored an unbeaten 50 in the first test. He's had 2 bad tests since then. You can't drop him on that.

What about his showing against Pakistan and New Zealand prior to that? If four bad innings aren't enough to condemn him, then one good innings shouldn't be enough to save him.

From Boxing Day last year, to before this series, Ponting had scored 769 runs @ 45, with 1 Century (A Double), and 7 50's. That's not 'One good Innings'.

Would you drop someone like Bradman just cos he's going through a bad patch, of course not 'cos he has the potential to get out of that slump at any time, just look at Michael Hussey.

I wasn't talking about innings last calendar year. Last year his batting was acceptable and his average was above 50.

THIS CALENDAR YEAR, his average is 40.8, he has just one century and he's failed to make double figures eight times. That's not good enough for a batsman who's so high up in the order.

Since that match in Hobart, his average is just 27.

You mentioned the last 12 months, so I assumed we were using that as a stand point.

Leading into this series, he had scored 700 runs @ 46. That's a good year. His bad form has only started with this series, and only in the past 2 tests.

I still don't think there's any justification in keeping him in the team when he clearly isn't playing up to the standard. The standard this series is exceptionally low and he's still failing to achieve it.

He stays in, because even in this poor form, he's more likely to score runs, than a debutant is. Simple as that.
