Yeah, as Skeptic suggested, depends who Fury were playing and WHEN the fixture was scheduled, like two of those A-League fixtures were on late arvo, early evening Sunday (Newc-Melb Heart too) - which is a period which 'may' draw more, especially in those two weeks anyway? Also would the times Fury plays at home be a bit different, so earlier/later start times than normal A-League fixtures on those days, due to the heat etc...? This can affect number of viewers too.

Considering that these games are only getting around 50k on paytv a couple of thousand watching on the net is fairly significant.

IN a way though watching it this way is hurting the a-league - IMO

agreed, I have a fox subscription but live away from home during the week so have to make do with a stream.

At least Hyundai, the sponsors get value out of games being played over the net.

How does Hyundai get value?

I suppose he just means, you still see the advertising as shown on Foxsports, during the streams - So as too sponsors shown during telecasts like Solo and their adverts and what have you, during the pre, post-match and half-time parts of the coverage, ofcourse. Heck you even see adverts for other Foxsports programs, including A-League fixtures and FoxSports FC.

I'm not arguing too much to paint a rosey picture, just saying, one could view it that way, though yeah it's hardly the same as a subscriber to Foxtel or even one watching Foxtel in a bar.

I would attribute North Queenslands high ratings to the fact that most middle-class families have Austar there which is cheaper and because in regional places there is less to do and watch.

Having noticed last Wednesday's Nov. 3rd Perth/Mel and Wel/Bris games were somewhere below the 44k #10 in the last rating period, I did some checking. In the past weeks i could find, the week night games rate at the bottom of all weekly games played. It's a but surprising as though the nrl's Monday night games pull the lowest crowds, they are regularly at or near to top of all their weekly games ratings. I presume this is because many can't/don't attend week night games, so it increases home viewers.

But aleague week night viewers are the opposite and that seems strange. Week night crowds are regularly lower like in the nrl, so I'd assume there'd be a similar pattern and no idea why there isn't. Anyone have a guess at an explanation?

If that's true then how can they claim things like "2 million Australians watched packed to the rafters last night" and "the Melbourne cup was seen by 3 million people" etc?

They extrapolate. ie. if all 3000 said they watched the melbourne cup, you'd assume over 20 million in Australia did.

Just like polling before elections predicting the winner

The games I try not miss apart from CCM away games are the ones involving Brissie, Adelaide, Fury or Hearts in that order. Brisbane's style of play this year has really translated into good ratings which is a nice reward I suppose. If the A-league ever gets to FTA it would be nice if the channel that gets the rights is able to chose its game of the week, that way sides playing well get to do it in front of a wider audience.

I'll 'dare,' emphasis on 'dare' as I don't have Foxtel and this is just one out there guess - There could be a variety of factors, especially as we talk people, so each individual has their reasons, but ofcourse yeah, there are patterns. Anyway, 'one' reason 'could' be is that midweek fixtures are still relatively new in the A-League? People in the first few seasons of the A-League, pre the initial expansion, were getting used or already accustomed, to the A-League just being a weekend, or on the weekend, league. Suddenly with expansion you not only had two more teams, but more games and some of those games had to be mid week.

I don't think the NSL even had mid week games, well not often, did it?

So mid-week games in our National league IS a relatively new thing, outright?

And looking into it closer, even the NRL and especially AFL atleast (I'm from AFL state ofc, so more familiar with that), those codes don't even have mid-week, as in PROPER, FREQUENT, mid week games like we do?

So culturally, amongst the mainsteam football codes, to be not only regularly attending, but also regularly viewing, say, 'Wednesday Night' football, is not something wider audiences have not quite become accustomed yet? So this may reflect a slight cultural lag, as A-League fans, let alone wider casual fans, become accustomed to this?

Also, Wednesday night or whenever, may be more competition generally on TV, you know, like even on FTA, this or that 'favourite show' may be on 7:30pm or heck, we may need to watch the news/weather at 6:25 or something. And on Foxtel itself, there may be shows/movies etc... on that subscribers, including A-League fans, may be more used to tuning in to?

I guess I just guess that not only A-League fans but in our wider sports viewing culture the practice of Wednesday night games (Aside from say the odd International cricket match - which in itself, I don't see as much of these days), we just are not accustomed?

Also, Monday Night, particularly a public holiday, which, dare I say, most of those AFL and NRL fixtures on Monday, they take place during public holidays and they are hyped up too, like ANZAC Day clash, Easter Monday fixture etc... They have big drawing teams like Essendon Collingwood etc... That's a whole world different and far, far less risk, than a regular Wednesday night, smack bang middle of the week, especially this time of the year and the early preceding months of this season, where people are still working and even studying/at school and so aren't quite in holidays/holiday mode, yet?

Public holidays = an associated tradition of Males at home on the couch 'watching the footy' (of some sort, AFL, NRL, GRIDIRON IN US), sipping a cold one (To stereotype even further), while wife cooks up big family lunch or something.

No such imagery for Wednesday nights, just lucky if you can get home alive, have something decent to eat that straight to bed for some. Hmm again, a number of A-League fans, including Foxsports subscribers could work and/or study too, so many not simply be at home when the game is on, or just too distracted by real life duties/routines, lol.

Got to feel kind of sorry for the FFA, in that way. I even hear that Mid Week fixtures will be under review, due to the low crowds drawn (Maybe low TV ratings too perhaps?) as part of the wider review of the A-League that is taking place, at the moment.

So they may not even have mid week, or maybe, not as many mid week fixtures, in the future, but then again, they may to persist with them, and if they do, they should do so longer term, to help instil that culture, familiarity with the practice. After all they do it elsewhere in the world and here too, ACL games are played mid week too, so fans kind of need to become accustomed to it.

Is it just co-incidence, like this week they were playing an attractive Brisbane side, in a QLD derby match? AS too previous matches, playing bigger teams?

Also, could time of day, time zone even, for their home matches, be better for TV audiences in the rest of Australia? Even the day itself, like a Friday evening match, they may draw more and Fury may play more of those? BTW I don't know exactly when and what days Fury have had their fixtures, but these things 'COULD' be a factor aswell as Fury themselves?

Hmm indeed, very much indeed. And that's actually the GREAT spin off of FTA getting a 'delayed' match, or extended match highlights, as part of an 'A-League Highlights package' they may get from Foxtel. That way they can naturally vet, if the fixtures to be distributed are NOT too long pre-arranged, which would be the more attractive fixtures to sell the product to a wider audience (aka like a higher scoring game, like that 3-2 game between the Mariners and GCU, seems to attract the mainstream punters), and therefore too, may encourage more to subscribe to Foxsports if they want more of it, perhaps.

Well they made the top 10 with a game agaisnt the ccst on a friday and a game against GCU on a Sunday. Hardly big teams, and GCU on a sunday is a pretty unattractive fixture for neutrals.

I think because of the Cowboys fox penetration is higher in the Nth Qld area and they have done a much better job than GCU of appealing to League fans.

The NRL Monday night game is a regular, weekly fixture. The fury games don't 'normally' rate as well as most other games and also didn't last season. I'd presume the reason behind it was/is only because of their place on the ladder making it of a lesser general interest, but nothing more than that.

Wow. Beckham was bigger than the Ashes. Nice. So basically if we could attract as big an audience as Galaxy to our HAL games we'd be in a pretty good position.

But we don't so....thats not good. Heart vs Sydney would have suffered d/t Galaxy game also. You would think that ANY away game for Melb or Syd would rate higher naturally d/t to population but that appears not to be the case as well.

No, it was bigger than the FOX coverage of the Ashes. Add it to the WIN coverage of the ashes and it would have been truly smashed.

And the Ch9 national, live coverage of the ashes. Nico, the ashes on fox were a 10pm replay of ch9's coverage. Fox don't have 'live' rights.

It seems that for A-League you have a set fanbase somewhere around 40-60 thousand people but of course not always will you get all watch one single match. If you have 45,000 people subscribing with A-league as the sole reason, at an average of 75$ per month ( could be more with hd, could be less with basics) it equals $40,500,000 per year in subscriptions fees alone. Now theres the cost of production and customer service etc but theres also advertising aswell. Only a proper marketing analysis could determine how big a % is the A-league in their choice to subscribe, and how big that pool of people. It could actually be more than 45 thousand, it could be less. Also keeping in mind that at this time, an extra 120,000+ viewers to fox is important given their lack of content.

I would make a hypothesis that "Football fans are more content deprived and hence value live sports broadcast as the major reason for subscribing to Pay TV more-so than other sports"

Bascially what im getting at, is that whilst numbers dont look as good in comparison to other sports, having a dedicated fan base of 50-60K A-league fans is actually a really good start and should pave way to increased tv revenue.

Are you serious? It was already mentioned that the number of people who watch at least part of an A League game is 1.4 million. And I think over 30% of that was regularly.

40k-60k fans? Yeah, the entire viewership is 40k-60k fans watching every single game

In fact - Melbourne Victory got 50k people to a single game. When you add the 20k - 30k that all teams have gotten at least once, and bare in mind that wasnt the entire fan base, thats 200k-300k fans alone.
