The point is Gyfox, they claimed they did all this research yet no one here was ever asked? No one on the official supporters forum was ever asked. No one knows anyone that was asked.

Who the hell did they ask?

Did they make up the research, or did they set up the research to get the result they wanted?

e.g if they DID ask someone from Menai or Kuring-gai then OF COURSE those in those areas will not want Western in the name. Because they aren't from Western Sydney.
Maybe they did ask this random person in the street in Kuring-gai about Western Sydney, and that person said "Never been there and wouldn't go there, so no to Western in the name"

Despite the fact that Rowden claimed they did all this research, no one here or in the football community had contact from them during this apparent "research".
When I emailed Rowden myself inviting him to meet the supporters at the Perth v SFC game, a board member came around and met us for 5 minutes. But that was it. Never heard from them again because they went belly up and AWOL with no explanation.

That's why we want nothing to do with them. There is no evidence for any research they apparently did, they all but ignored the fans, and then went AWOL with no explanation after all the talking up they did.

I wouldn't have a clue who Rowden's mob talked to. All I did was post one of their press releases when the other bloke claimed they were liars and hadn't consulted anyone. I did it to further the discussion. If you and he don't believe them thats your prerogative.

Now that we've thoroughly beaten the dead horse way beyond what was necessary with the name thing....

Who do people want as WS's first big Marquee signing?

Lucas Neil and Bresciano seem like realistic targets. If Bresh could maintain the form he has been in this year then he would bring some league shattering excitement on the field as well as the crowds so he has my vote. As far as I'm aware both of their contracts expire after NEXT season.

Cahill is another worth mentioning as he seems to feel some loyalty towards West Sydney. Would bring the crowds more than any other player but could very easily be a flop if the team isn't built around him properly. Also seems resistant to leaving Everton/Europe and still has years left on his contract.

this talk about kewell would be great imo, and maybe one more well known WS player such as emerton or neill.
ideally though i would go for cahill, but cant see him coming back for another couple of seasons
i hope we dont sign too many big name players as i dont want us to loose that underdog, working class identity that could be crucial in the identity of the club.
we could get some players that are playing in 'lower' known leagues such as saun rooney in indonesia.
and the NWSPL have some real talents there.

If you don't* wan't to lose your underdog working class identity then you don't want to sign Kewell, Neil or Cahill. Can;t believe you didn't say Bresh. I would have thought most WS fans would be wanting him the most.
He's more likeable than any of these guys bar maybe Cahill, he's better technically and more exciting on the pitch than any of these guys bar maybe Kewell, and he just reaks of West Sydney with the way he talks and carries himself.

From what I hear their backer pulled out fairly early which is probably why they didn't follow it up.

these players were born and raised in western sydney besides bresciano, so i dont see how bringing them home would change anything.

Just shows how behind the times some people are. Average income in western Sydney is equal to Melbourne and behind only Central Sydney and Perth in the nation. Western Sydney is the third biggest contributor to the nation's GDP behind Central Sydney and Melbourne. But why would the boys who are born there and learnt their football there want to go back.

Why is there still not an association football club in the association football centre of Australia after 7 going on 8 years? ](*,)
Almost a quarter of the old national league resided in West Sydney and had the most passionate support, but nooooooooo lets not even have a single team from there in the new league.
So ridiculous ](*,)
I'm not even going to be a WS supporter but I've grown beyond impatient.

Becuase they are a stereotype, and laregely not true anymore, how can people identify with the club when it doesn't represent them?
How did being 'Bling FC' work out for Sydney? Not very well, even though it's the prevailing stereotype of the eastern suburbs.

The NSW Government's western Sydney website describes the region as NSW's economic powerhouse and with another million people moving there over the next 25 years it will become even more powerful. I agree with you that the working class stereo type is outdated and the name and culture of the club ought to reflect the aspirations of the people who move to and live in one of the biggest and strongest regions in the country. Its already bigger than Adelaide and Perth and it will be nipping on Brisbane's heels quite soon population wise.

The problem with GWS as a descriptor for a club is that it leads to the issue that Queensland Roar had when other teams in the state entered the League. This is one of the reasons I have been arguing for a more local than purely regional name because blind Freddy should be able to see that a region that is already the heartland of football that is growing at 3-5% pa over the next two or three decades will have more teams in the League in the medium to long term. My suggestion of Cumberland draws on the entire area originally having this name but the trend being that this is becoming the name for the inner part of GWS. This leaves Blacktown/Nepean and Liverpool/Macarthur open for clubs with whatever name is appropriate for those parts of GWS at the time they enter the competition.

As an aside, on the issue of the "heartland of football", I am old enough to remember when this was used for the Canterbury/Marrackville, Bankstown, Auburn and Western Suburbs region having taken it off the Hunter and Illawarra and I can remember the rise of Liverpool, Fairfield, Holroyd and Blacktown to this exalted title. Looking at player registrations and the planned growth in the north west and south west growth regions I see the start of the passing of the baton to the Hills, Hawkesbury, Nepean and Macathur outer perimeter of the Sydney Basin. A team broadly representative of the entire region will drive the outward influence of football in my opinion and it can't come quickly enough.

I'm not even going to be a WS supporter but I've grown beyond impatient.

Sydney FC being for the whole of Sydney was an expression of John O'Neill selling "one club one city" to the Board. Anyone who really understood how Sydney works as a city has laughed at the idea from Day 1. There were two strong bids from Sydney when bids were called and instead of pushing one of them to the west they discouraged one to the point where they pulled out. The A-League has been the poorer from that lunacy.

FOOTBALL Federation Australia president Frank Lowy’s desire to establish an A-League team in western Sydney could work to Blacktown’s benefit.

The FFA revoked Gold Coast United’s A-League license last month and Lowy told reporters he won’t rest until the federation has a team in western Sydney.

Blacktown and Districts Soccer Football Association president Jack Taylor said the newly constructed Blacktown Football Park would be the perfect spot to host the team.

“It is the world’s biggest sport and we have an amazing park in Blacktown to cater for such a team,” he said.

“When you think about it, three surrounding associations cater for up to 70,000 players.

“It is the best field in Australia at the minute but all we need is a large stand.”

Blacktown Football Park features an artificial pitch, a 1000-seater grandstand, undercover seating for 278 spectators, two training fields, canteen, media facilities, disabled access and a state-of-the-art PA system.

It is the home of NSW Premier League team Blacktown Spartans.

Mr Taylor said soccer in western Sydney has more support than the GWS Giants AFL club.

“I will be watching the Giants closely in their first year,” he said.

“I’m not sure they have the support at the grass roots level.

“We have the support of all the young people playing football.”

Frank Lowy opened his first business in Blacktown in 1953.

the least of the worries is where the team will train out of, there is plenty of good options in that regard.

Eh, play some Women's league matches there. It's not big enough for the full team.

It could be. And it could be a genuine football only facility.

the blacktown council has always been willing to accept a proposal for a staduim there.
as for turning the spartans home into the staduim, impossible. there is no way you would be able to fit a staduim in that surroundings. they would have to build a new staduim further in the land off the road. there is heaps of room for a carpark and other facilities there.
dont know what this would mean for aquilina reserve or the spartans home if this does happen though.
