Our club is nearly 1/3rd of the way through its first season and the ridiculously early period of being able to negotiate with players coming off contract at the end of the season is upon us. Who in our squad is on 1 year contracts? How are they going? What are our deficiencies? Who is coming off contract that would be worth us snaffling? Are we aware of any young players in the region that are worth a look at? What positions might we need to look overseas for?

Polenz has been a good pick up for the Wanderers. I'd like to see him retained by the club.

Surprised... WSW defender Jerome Polenz said his side is delivering on its potential. (Getty)
Western Sydney Wanderers defender Jerome Polenz said the A-League side is delivering on the potential he knew was there when he signed with the club.
Polenz joins Wanderers
Polenz isn't surprised the club, which was formed in April, is fifth ahead of its Week 8 clash against Melbourne Victory at Parramatta Stadium on Saturday.

“You could see in the beginning that we were playing well but we were not effective,” said the Germany youth international, who has started every match in a defence which has conceded five goals in seven games.

“Now we are showing our true worth and the results are coming. We only had two or three players a few months ago and now we are growing up fast and everybody is getting to know and understand each other.

“We all know what we have to do. We are well prepared and the fact we have won three of our last four games is no coincidence.

“We are strong at the back. That’s the key for us. If you are not sound at the back then you have nothing to build on.”

“There has been no turning point needed for us because from the first moment the season started we knew about our skills and that we were well prepared. Okay, the outcome was not there but we were playing well without scoring goals.

“Sure, we are not winning games by big margins but the good thing is we are not giving away too much at all.

Polenz, who played in Germany's 2.Bundesliga with Union Berlin last season, praised Wanderers coach Tony Popovic, who he says is one of the main reasons why the club has exceeded expectations over the first seven weeks of the competition.

“We are physically and mentally prepared for every occasion. We are working for each other and in Tony Popovic we have an excellent coach," Polenze said.

“He is doing a great job. I have seen many coaches in my career and I have never had a coach like him.

“He understands players and he leaves nothing to chance for any game. We all know what is expected of us and what we have to do.”

Before opting to join Wanderers on a one-year deal, Polenz had heard some negative comments about the standard of the A-League only to be surprised by the level of play.

“You have to physically strong in this league and you need to be mobile but that suits my game,” he said. “I’d heard it was not a technical league, but I see a lot of good players here, players who are both physically strong but also good in a technical way and I wasn’t really expecting that.

“This league is growing up fast. I also love the passion of the supporters here. That too has been a surprise for me.”

“I came here to first to look at what is happening in this country.

“Now I like what I see and I hope to stay here with Wanderers beyond this season. But who knows what the future holds.”

Yeah mate already read it and it really put Poppas tactics into context for me. Nice work

On a side note there's some nice dicussion over in the CCM forum about our current formation and its merits. I'm going to post your Hearts match preview over there becuase its pretty relevant to the discussion they're having at the moment.

neverwozza,

You may not have seen Kate's reply on her blog, but she linked to an analysis of the Western Sydney game as per your request: I wrote said analysis for my A-League tactics blog, and you can find it here - http://australiascout.wordpress.com/2012/10/27/brisbane-roar-western-sydney-wanderers-win-bridge-first-tactic/ - hope it's of some use.

Why haven't WSW scored yet?

Hey Kate,

A few arguments in the one of the other threads about WSW "parking the bus" against Brisbane. I would love to see some analysis around this if you are taking requests. For mine they played a brilliant counter attacking game but didn't sit back as such. They also held onto the ball quite well and I can't remember too many route one lumps down the field. Happy to be proven wrong if your analysis shows something different.

Cheers

With Kresinger injured it will be interesting to see how we do with Bridge in the strikers role andHersi and Mineicon on the wing or Haliti instead of one of those.

With our second Hyundai A-League home match complete, and having a sold out Sydney Derby, I want to take this opportunity to acknowledge and say a huge Thank You to our seven major Associations: Bankstown; Southern Districts; Granville; Macarthur; Nepean; Blacktown and Gladesville Hornsby, for their huge role and hard work in reaching 4,000 Foundation Members. From August through to the end of the Month, the Wanderers will have been involved in 85 community football events involving some 125,000 people.

The hard work of the Associations and broader community is phenomenal. Most of these people give much of their time voluntarily, with some working for over 25 years in their Associations. They are passionate and driven by what is best for their players and footballing community and are a vital part of our Club and the future success of the Wanderers. We thank them all enormously.

Piss off you can claim Gladesville-Hornsby! For a start we're supposedly Central Coast Mariners turf, they have a huge community relations with us up here, but second to that our association only goes as far out as Cherrybrook and Glenhaven, that can't count in, you can have Castle Hill that's your territory

 seems GHFA are hedging their bets for all, I live and play in the district myself and I know their home page has Mariners/SFC logos as well as Spirit FC based at Christie Park where also many jnr mariner trials are held.
Well I do consider West Ryde and beyound is west !

very good article above, it puts into perspective how such a game-plan is not very efficient, though in my opinion, everton have learnt to play that game better than most other sides and their ratio would be much better than epl averages.

i hope popa sees the article, someone get it to him
