Saw a good point made today about some of the criticisms of the movie, and it's something this movie has really shown up. We are now watching Star Wars movies through a completely different perspective because, for the most part, we all watched the original trilogy in a bunch as a complete story and we all knew the story the prequels would generally take. We're, again for the most part, not used to being told one third of a story and having to wait for the next part to answer questions. Saw a good analogy for it along the lines of would you read 1/3 of a book and get pissed off that you don't have all the answers yet?

Yeah been almost a week now  and with the warning in the thread title if someone hasn't seen the movie it's their own fault if they read something in here.

Absolutely agree with this; anyone who goes to this thread without having seen the movie by now certainly has no excuse.

Bought the Visual Dictionary for Ep 7 today and it definitely explains a lot of stuff not explained in the movies.

Did love that the First Order realised how ineffective the Empire's stormtroppers were and decided to ramp up their combat training and that only the best soldiers become stormtroopers. Also did love that they decided to add deflector shields to the Tie Fighters

The dictionary also makes a point of pointing out that R2-D2 has been keeping internal copies of the data he's accessed over the years, which explains why he has the rest of the map.

plenty to like about it in particular finn's character

it was a bit silly that ben solo got beaten by someone who has never used the force. Wasn't he trained by luke and this scary sith lord and is descendant from vader so has 20 000 midichlorians. Fair enough if Ray got trained for a few episodes and finally beat him but he has kind of been declawed as a villain. Shame though coz he was interesting. The only way to save this is if Ray becomes a sith

I would love that twist if in the next movie Rey tunrs to the darkside. (Kinda seemed to me that she was using it at the end fight)

Luke would probably just be like "fuck this shit i'm out" again though

i mean seriously what was new about this
there was a death star that got taken out after the rebellion got some inside information to take out a sheild generator located on a planet and a mission of small fighters took out the thing and blew it up
there is a sith in a mask with familial relation to the protagonists serving a creepy old dude sith and they have a nazi themed galactic dictatorship (with less subtle nazi themes)
There is a lost r2d2 like droid
a death of a main protagonist at the hands of a sith on a bridge in the death star
a random person from a desert planet being the one to defeat the dark lord
not to mention how many scenes were awkward or didn't make sense
Ben solo talking to darth vaders mask
that weird scene of Lukes light saber calling to Ray like the one ring from lotr
The 5 minutes at the end of Luke and ray staring deep and meaningfully at each other
the hug between ray and leia when they don't really know each other
That scene where fin and ray decide to leave the dialogue makes little sense and just look like the writer needed his characters to get into the next position for the next scene in the story
Ray beating the sith before getting any training

Also the phantom menace may have been an average movie but it had a few plusses- darth maul, the light saber fighting was more fun, pod racing, cool world building (corrosant is a city planet!) an attempt at in interesting plot (actually it is an interesting plot on paper. All these wars and political disputes being smoke and mirrors to give palpatine more power and anakins story. It may not be good in the movie because the telling was poor but it pulls a few heartstrings in weird al yankovics telling) and quigon jin was pretty cool

to me they are both meh movies. The latest had a few good things. I loved fin's character he was funny and I genuinely cared what happened to him. And chewy and hans are great as always good nostalgia too. Love the old star wars theme songs. The first half hour of the main villian was great too a genuinely human villian before things got silly

TFA is a soft reboot. JJ Abrams did his job perfectly because he made it work by introducing a lovable brand of new heroes and a great unique villain. The aim of this movie was to cast off the shadows of the prequels so they can do something fresh and new for the next two movies (that's why they got Rian Johnson on for the next movie)

RedletterMedia explains it perfectely in there review of the movie of why this soft reboot works and why people really like it.

And most of your points are nitpicks that could be easily rationalized (Rey is lukes daughter and thats why the lightsaber calls to her, Rey and luke didn't stare at each other for five minutes, i thought it was a great ending for the movie. etc.)

You think Darth Maul is cool? Tell me about his motivation and a bit of his personality.

You think Quigon was cool? Describe him without saying what he looks like, what kind of costume he wore, or what his profession or role in the movie was.

Yep. As long as they don't mirror the other two movies (I doubt they will as they got Rian Johnson for the next movie) then this sequel trilogy will be fucking fantastic.

Don't get me wrong I'm glad you all enjoyed it
But once I got past the nostalgia I had to appreciate the talent it takes to make a completely non-original story and still have it make no sense
Movie was a trainwreck although I initially enjoyed the nostalgia trip

Yeah I really think TFA was a retread of ANH just because they brought JJ in and it was the safest and easiest way for them to right the ship and bring Star Wars back to what it should be.

I can understand peoples complaints about 'oh it's just another death star' and while yes it is, unlike ANH the Starkiller base is just a set piece and not the main thrust of the story like the Death Star was in ANH. Starkiller base is more in the background of what's going on with all these characters and they needed a set piece that would be satisfying and safe and almost familiar for people, no better way to go than a planet sized death star

Yeah I definitely soured in my opinion overnight
I think apart from fin the main thing I initially liked were the nostalgia trips
Chewys growls, the theme songs, light sabers, Hans solo
Then by the morning having those childhood memories drawn into an otherwise crap moving turned a positive into a negative
Perhaps I'll come to some middle ground later
At the moment though I suspect that this will be like Independence Day
A movie everyone thinks is great then looks back and says what was I thinking

I doubt it, the general consensus from different star wars forums, reddit and reviewers twitters is that the movie is much more enjoyable the second time watching it. The complete opposite of TPM.

P.s. Cinemas were completely empty 730 pm in a major shopping centre for this movie also the session after us didn't have anyone. Only one other person in our session.
Facebook feed has a few comments along the lines of "am I the only one that didn't like the new Star Wars"?
