Chris go to bed. LOL - MH cant even afford a ceiling fan SMFC can't even get a spot in the top tier of football in Australia. I think I'd rather be a Heart fan  at least they get on telly and play decent sides ;)

So back to my question
IF smfc were in the HAL - would a rivalry between us and WSW be significant?

What makes you say this? chris wrote:So back to my question

MV V smfc would be huge and much bigger than the Heart Derby - that was signed off already in the Heart out smfc thread I am referring to a cross border rivalry - or can't you guys afford a ticket to Melbourne Is that it?

We dont need a cross border rivalry. You obviously didnt watch the WSW v Heart game a few weeks ago.

They will never play top flight football again because of the ethnic tag attached to the club. This is so true. SMFC is predominantly a Greek club serving the Greek community of Melbourne. It's contribution to the broader Melbourne has pitiful, but then again it's always put Greeks first, and treated the greater community with indifference, sometimes contempt, such as during the 92 NSL final when the entire SMFC fan base (Ben wasn't in Australia back then) disgracefully chose to sing the Greek national anthem while the Australian anthem was being played. Now it wants to pass itself off as a multicultural club that treats everyone equally, but we all know this is just a smokescreen to get admission to the A league As soon as they get it they would revert to their pro Greek chants and hire players and personnel reflecting their Greek heritage, and when the stands turn up empty they will blame racism for people not supporting their pro Greek club But we're not fools and we know SMFC will never be an Australian club, nor an A league club

There would be many many parallels between the 2 clubs and their operational model
smfc in HAL would attract 7K minus marketing and upward of 10k with marketing
our fanbase is a dormant base - however we do have 5k members - but they do not watch amatuer hour - you see the VPL is a commercial break - this is when viewers rush off to make a cup of coffee or take the washing out of the washer - smfc is a top flight team - not a VPL break
WSW fans beware: when smfc returns - your fan club will look like a bunch of kids with pimples on their faces
Edited by chris: 31/3/2013 02:18:12 AM Does this means SMFC active support are filled with grey hairs? Would be a worlds first!

Please keep your South Melbourne versus whomever threads in the State League section where they belong...is the plan for you to create a SMFC thread against all A-League clubs...because it wouldn't be acceptable for any other State League club just as it isn't acceptable for your club.

I think SMFC would have a good rivalry MH, my reasoning is that they are both smallish clubs. SMFC have their jimmies rustled at the fact that Heart have been picked above them for the A-League. I can see you jealousy/anger towards them in every post you make.

If you don't like what Chris has to say, don't respond to his threads. It's not hard to do.

fwiw in regards to what would/wouldn't be a derby/rivalry - apart from local, geographical rivalries, the only other ones are made on the field from past results/experiences/etc. so if smfc get into the a-league one day, i can see them having a rivalry with the other melbourne team(s), but until a few games have been played and legs have been broken, i can't see any inter-state rivarlies happening from the get-go.

South Melbourne Hellas is not a sleeping giant as someone quoted. They have been asleep so long they are dead. Oakleigh is a bigger Greek club than South Melbourne Hellas, they have been more successful lately.

I could see South coming into the league in 2015/16 if the conditions were right. When the Victory joined the FFA put a 5 year moratorium in place preventing any other Melbourne side joining until 2010, wouldn`t surprise me if the same deal exists with the Heart. Would Melbourne be ready to support 3 teams by then? Lets hope so.
