Moreton Bay Jets change of tact to fly up earlier pays off as they inflict first home loss on the Northern Fury.

MORETON Bay Jets coach Terry Kirkham says teams will need to take a different approach to playing in Townsville to try and snap the Northern Fury’s home fortress advantage.

The Jets became the first visiting team to win in Townsville in 2014, an 83rd minute stunner by National Premier League leading goal scorer Royce Brownlie stealing the win.

It took that moment of brilliance to break the deadlock after the Northern Fury took a sixth minute lead through Jani Peut before Charles Mendy pulled one back six minutes later.

But Kirkham believed his side’s change in tact to fly up to Townsville a night earlier, rather than heading up on game day, played a big part in his final challenging side’s win.

“I went to my chairman four weeks ago and said I need to fly up Saturday,” Kirkham said.

“To be fair to the club they paid for that.

“I think flying up at 5 o’clock in the morning, which was our original schedule, means the boys were up at 3.30 in the morning and then they’ve got nowhere to go.

“I think that’s a massive task and a tough battle and to be fair to our chairman, we got up here on Saturday night, we rested all morning and I think that’s a big difference.

“And the weather was perfect for us because there was no humidity.”

The more experienced Jets side pegged the Fury back in their own half at times which meant striker Braedyn Crowley found himself isolated against the Moreton Bay backline.

Fury coach Ian Ferguson said the Jets formation with two attacking midfielders meant he had to bring back Corey Waples into a holding role, leaving the Northern attackers on their own.

“That’s when I felt we were getting a bit more of the play but without any real impact,” Ferguson said.

“Kevin (Fraser) and Braedyn were a little bit isolated but normally we leave Corey where he usually is and he gives us a little bit more going forward but unfortunately we had to take him out of there today because they were controlling the games for periods.”

But the Fury coach wasn’t displeased with his team’s performance, which leaves the Fury mid-table.

“It’s taken a wonderstrike for them to win the game and if that went over the crossbar or the keeper saves it then it possibly could have been 1-1, which was probably a fairer result,” he said.

Peut’s goal was his second in as many home games, after scoring against the Strikers, and was a well taken half-volley into the bottom left corner.

“It just popped up on the edge of the box and I thought ‘why not?’ early on,” he said.

“I could see it going in and I turned around before it hit the net so I was pretty happy.”
