Soccer: Red Devils notch up first win of year June 3, 2013, 8:30 p.m. The Red Devils have finally broken their drought. BALLARAT Red Devils broke its long-standing drought on Saturday, tasting victory for the first time of the year against Fitzroy City in Melbourne. The Haymes Red Devils fielded easily its strongest team for the year in the Football Federation Victoria state league two season, eclipsing Fitzroy City 3-1 in a dominant display. The margin could arguably have been even greater had the Reds been more clinical in front of goal, but it was nevertheless a win to savour. Ballarat should have been ahead early when Simon Murphy was played in by Liam Harding, but he fired into the side netting. Further shots from Dom Swinton, Michael Trigger and Harding all tested the City keeper, who was the busiest player on the pitch. In contrast, Red Devils keeper Rick Janssen was a mere spectator and only caught the ball on one occasion in the opening 45 minutes, except for three goalkicks. Ballarat almost took the lead on 39 minutes when Trigger’s shot on the turn was flicked on by Harding, but the ball hit the crossbar. “I was delighted with the way we started the match,” said Reds coach Sinisa Cohadzic. “Some of our passing was excellent considering the conditions, but we lacked a final pass in the opposition’s third, which was a little disappointing as we had so much of the ball. “When we hit the bar I thought it might have been one of those days again.” Ballarat again came out firing in the second half and was finally rewarded when Josh Romein fired home a penalty in the 50th minute. Fitzroy responded immediately against the run of play through a goalmouth scramble, but it was Ballarat which got back on top on 72 minutes when Murphy put in a perfect cross to Trigger, who this time converted with a classy header from 10 yards. Murphy then got on the scoreboard himself with a tap-in, with Trigger repaying the favour by setting up the easiest of goals in the 84th minute. “I was very proud of the players today,” Cohadzic said. “Again things weren’t going our way at different stages, but to their credit they continued to attack, fight for every ball and put more numbers in the box, which got the reward with us scoring three excellent goals. “We deserved to win and I am happy for the young players to finally get the win on the board and deservedly so.” http://www.thecourier.com.au/story/1546961/soccer-red-devils-notch-up-first-win-of-year/?cs=63

Strong Red Devils teams to look for first win May 24, 2013, 9 p.m. Liam Harding, left, is a welcome return to the Red Devils’ starting line-up. BALLARAT Red Devils will field arguably its strongest team this year today in a bid to notch its first win of the season against fourth-placed Keilor Park. The Reds are almost at full strength for the first time this season with no injuries, only one player out suspended and another unavailable. Seasoned campaigner Adrian Curtain will miss with work commitments and Rhyse Crowe still has a week to serve on his suspension. On a positive note, however, Liam Harding, Dom Swinton and Simon Murphy will all return to the Haymes Red Devils starting line-up. Both Harding and Murphy came off the bench last week, with Murphy recovering from a hamstring injury and Harding fresh off the plane from overseas. Coach Sinisa Cohadzic said having the duo back into the team was a start towards building stability, something that had been severely lacking in the early stages of the season. “Having Liam, Simon and Dom back will be a positive for our young group,” he said. “One thing we have not had this year is stability and have not had the same starting eleven two games in a row. “I am hoping over the next couple of weeks we should get some stability with all our players back.” Keilor Park knocked Ballarat out of the Victorian Cup earlier this season, winning 2-4 in Ballarat in a game that the Reds had many opportunities to actually win. Still a very young side, Ballarat will look towards its experienced players to help steer it towards victory at Trekardo Park. Ballarat could possibly play just three backs in a bid to be more attacking, pushing five players into the midfield. “We know Keilor very well after playing them in the cup in a game where we made many mistakes,” Cohadzic said. “This time around though the players have improved in every aspect of the game so I am expecting a better performance and that then should take care of the result. “We are not far off and I believe with the players slowly coming back positive results are just around the corner.” The team: GK: Darryl Newby Backs: Laurence Gogorossis, Josh Romein, Pietro Angeli Midfield: Michael Trigger, Liam Harding, Stefan Nigro, Harley Boscher, Dom Swinton See your ad here Forwards: Ian Nolan, Simon Murphy Subs: Lawrence Tombe, Bolish Salvatore, Josh Antonelli http://www.thecourier.com.au/story/1525607/strong-red-devils-teams-to-look-for-first-win/?cs=63

A RED card and no points. See your ad here This has become an all-too-familiar scenario for the Haymes Ballarat Red Devils in Football Federation Victoria state league two this season. The Reds again came up empty-handed after losing a player early, being defeated by Moreland City 6-2. Moreland City put the game away with three goals in the last 15 minutes of each half. Ballarat lined up without five regular players, but despite this it made a bright start at Trekardo Park. Harley Bosher had an opportunity to score in the opening three minutes on the end of a Laurance Gogorossis cross, but could not convert. Bolish Salvatore hit the post and Michael Trigger then put a shot over the bar – all in 11 minutes. But the game changed complexion on 19 minutes when Rhyse Crowe received his second yellow card and with it his marching orders. This was just the opening Moreland City needed, and with the game opening up it took a three-goal advantage to the half-time break. Ballarat fought back, though. Santo Victor had an easy tap in at the far post and three minutes later Ballarat was within one of Moreland City. Trigger and Ian Nolan exchanged passes, Trigger cut the ball back to Bosher at the top of the box and his first-time left shoot flew into the top corner of the net. The Reds could have levelled when a Nolan free kick found Josh Romein at the front post, only to see the shot off target. That was one of Ballarat’s last chances. Moreland City dominated the run home with a sealer at 76 minutes and another two in the last six minutes of the match. Reds coach Sinisa Cohadzic said being down a man, a structure change had been required at half-time against the best team in the league. He said the game plan had worked brilliantly until the red card. “The first 15 minutes were the level of soccer I want Ballarat to play,” Cohadzic said The Reds will welcome back Stefan Nigro, Liam Harding, Simon Murphy and Shaya Almousa for Saturday’s away match with Brunswick City. http://www.thecourier.com.au/story/1498854/ballarat-red-devils-horror-run-continues/?cs=63

Vikings remain in race for top By TIM O'CONNOR May 13, 2013, 10 p.m. A SECOND-HALF strike from former Socceroo Joe Spiteri meant Vikings had to settle for a 1-1 draw with Point Cook in Football Federation Victoria state league five on Saturday. The result, however, kept the Sebastopol-based Vikings’ unbeaten start to the season intact, leaving them in third place on the ladder after round five. Vikings took the lead early in the contest after Jye Cartledge headed into the net from a corner, but the home side was left only with a point after Spiteri’s brilliant long-range effort shortly after the break. Coach Michael Busija said it was a game the Vikings should have won, particularly as they controlled significant periods of the match. “All in all I was pleased with 95 per cent of the game but disappointed for the players as much as anything that they couldn’t turn their domination into reward,” he said. “I’m not disappointed in them, more disappointed for them. “I felt we should have won.” A serious wrist injury to Viking Matt Jamieson was a sour note from the weekend’s fixture, with the midfielder likely to spend the next month on the sidelines. “It’s a blow for us because he’s certainly one of our top two or three players, but at the same time it’s an opportunity for someone else,” Busija said. “I think we have got the depth to cover him.” The Vikings, just two points behind ladder-leader Melton Phoenix, travel to take on the Sunshine Heights Western Tigers this Saturday. http://www.thecourier.com.au/story/1498864/vikings-remain-in-race-for-top/?cs=63

Sports the big winners in five-year plan for Ballarat SPORTING CHANCE: The redevelopment of Eureka Stadium is still a distant prospect for Ballarat, but the big winner will be the Regional Soccer Facility. The Ballarat Regional Soccer Facility could be completed in time for the 2015 Asian Cup but the redevelopment of Eureka Stadium remains a distant prospect. The City of Ballarat’s draft budget locks in Ballarat’s sport and recreation priorities with a $21 million, five-year plan. Soccer would claim a big win, with $5.6 million allocated in 2013-14 to bring the $11 million Ballarat Regional Soccer Facility to completion – with or without the aid of federal government funding. The Hollioake tennis precinct at Wendouree has also been singled out to receive upgrades in the budget and a master plan would be created for its future development. Mayor John Burt said the commitment to the Ballarat Regional Soccer Facility would enable Ballarat to host international teams training for the 2015 Asian Cup. “The facility down there is of the highest standard we can have in a regional city,” Cr Burt said. The second stage of the facility will include the construction of the main show pitch, a synthetic pitch and small sided soccer pitches, as well as construction of the major grandstand, pavilion seating and fitting out of a community space. Delivering a “major new indoor sports facility for Ballarat” would be a feature of the five-year plan, and city chief executive officer Anthony Schinck said the Eureka Stadium remained a priority for the council. But the $80 million project would require substantial funding from other levels of government. Another element of the five-year plan would be to provide certainty to clubs and organisations about when redevelopments at their facilities would occur. The $21 million budget would include “extensive” developments at each of the city’s major sport precincts with works undertaken on surfaces, pavilions and landscaping. Equal access to sporting facilities is another priority of the plan, with the development of six change facilities across the city. rachel.afflick@fairfaxmedia.com.auhttp://www.thecourier.com.au/story/1498826/sports-the-big-winners-in-five-year-plan-for-ballarat/?cs=62

Damn, if I knew about that I might have gone back to the Rat and watched. Didn't even know Vikings went to the state pyramid; they were always one of the stronger Ballarat teams when I was in that world.

Soccer: Vikings put themselves on the map By PAT NOLAN May 10, 2013, 10:30 p.m. Sebastopol Vikings captain Ryan Rykers. RYAN Rykers knows all about being part of Ballarat’s biggest soccer team. Now, he has turned his attention towards helping a much lesser-known club put itself on the soccer map. Since joining Sebastopol Vikings at the start of last year, Rykers has already seen a vast change in the club’s future. The Vikings are now competing in the Football Federation Victoria state league five competition, having previously played in the Ballarat District Soccer Association until this year. Rykers, 28, played soccer for the Ballarat Red Devils for 10 years, before a vast change in personnel at the club saw his days with the Reds come to an end. But with that end came a new opportunity to steer a new club in a new direction. Rykers won the best and fairest at Sebastopol and won the league goal scoring in 2012. And if early season form is anything to go by, Rykers and Sebastopol are certainly on the right track, although he has now turned defender. The Vikings sit second on the ladder, with three wins and a draw from their four matches so far. “It’s a good start we’ve made, which I suppose was a bit unexpected. Hopefully we can start to turn a few heads now,” he said. “It was hard to know what it was going to be like really when we entered the league.” Today the Vikings will host Point Cook at home, a side that includes the likes of former Socceroos Joe Spiteri and Danny Tiatto. “It will be good for the guys to learn off the likes of those really experienced guys, we are all really looking forward to it.” LIKELY LINE-UP GOALKEEPER: Matt Smith DEFENDERS: Vinny Cotronea, Jye Cartledge, Ryan Rykers, Jason Hekkema MIDFIELD: Anton Maggi, Scott Berg, Matt Jamieson FORWARDS: Luke Terrill, Paul McClounan, Justin Robson SUBS: Kyle Burns, Marcus Lynch, Sam Young http://www.thecourier.com.au/story/1493793/soccer-vikings-put-themselves-on-the-map/?cs=12

Ballarat AFC. Keep it neat.
It should be the other way around; keep the Red Devils name alive in the local comps but take on a name that can be taken somewhat more seriously on the potentially national stage.

But if the Red Devils do have to change their name I'd prefer it not to be some cheesy reference to the gold rush like the Miners, Rush, Diggers, Gold, Rebels or anything like that. All those names are taken by other teams in Ballarat and Bendigo anyway. Somthing simple like Ballaarat Town, Ballarat Rams, the Squatters, or the Unicorns would suffice. Seriously, anything but the gold rush. I work at Sovereign Hill and even I'm over it.

Quote:SPECIAL CLUB MEETING 24th May 6PM!!!!! Dear Ballarat Soccer and Sports Club member I am writing to announce a very exciting opportunity that has arisen for our club and elite players. A new National Premier League (NPL) competition has been developed for season 2014 by Football Federation Victoria (FFV) and the Ballarat region has the opportunity to field a club in this new competition. Given our senior flagship teams, the Ballarat Red Devils and Ballarat Lady Devils are the premier teams in the region, we have the opportunity to have our teams accepted into the new NPL competition. The new competition has been rolled out in each state in Australia and was an initiative of Football Federation Australia. The NPL is inclusive of men’s and women’s teams and includes junior teams from U12s to U20s as well as senior men’s and women’s teams. The NPL in each state forms a second tier competition below the A League and is being developed to provide a pathway to elite teams for talented players in each state. It needs to be noted that should our club be accepted into the NPL, only our senior men’s and reserves and women’s seniors, reserves and U 18s will be part of the NPL. Our local BDSA teams (Community part of club) will remain in the BDSA. To be accepted into the NPL there is one major condition that is being imposed by FFV. That condition is that we will have to in effect split off our non BDSA competition teams into a new NPL entity. This will mean that the Ballarat Soccer and Sports Club will remain in the BDSA however the “Red Devils” and “Lady Devils” will move into the new NPL entity and create a junior structure below these senior teams that will also play in the NPL in their respective age groups. The new NPL entity will be a completely separate club to the Ballarat Soccer and Sports Club. It needs to be noted that the teams playing in the BDSA competition will no longer be able to use the reference to the “Devils”, instead they will simply be called the Ballarat Soccer Club. It is envisaged (although not yet confirmed) that the new NPL entity will play out of the new Ballarat Regional Soccer Facility, freeing up Trekardo Park and associated clubrooms and facilities to be utilized by our teams playing in the BDSA. As a committee we believe it is the best way forward for our club to split off our elite teams into the new NPL entity to give our talented players the opportunity to play at the highest level. We have passed a motion of intent at our most recent committee meeting to move our elite teams into the NPL however only on the provision that this is the wish of our members via a vote at an extraordinary meeting. The meeting will be conducted at the Trekardo Park clubrooms on Friday the 24th of May 2013 at 6.00 pm and we urge all members to attend. More information regarding the new entity will be provided on the night so that an informed vote can be made. More information regarding the new NPL can be found at http://www.footballfedvic.com.au/index.php?id=nplvPlease note there may be some media attention paid to this issue in the coming weeks prior to the meeting. It is the position of the committee that we intend to move our elite teams into the new NPL entity and this position will be made available publicly, however there will also be attached a provision in any media that it will first need to be approved by our club members. Who is entitled to vote? All registered players - if a player is under 18 his/her parent can vote. All non playing financial members. All Life Members Regards Jamie Winton President Ballarat Soccer and Sports Club Inc

Soccer: Ballarat Red Devils seek licence for National Premier Leagues May 7, 2013, 11 p.m. Ballarat Red Devils president James Winton and bid chairman Andrew Burgess are hoping the club can secure a spot in the National Premier Leagues Victoria competition. BALLARAT Red Devils have set their sights on the big time. The Haymes Red Devils confirmed yesterday they will chase a licence in the soon-to-be-formed National Premier Leagues Victoria competition, an elite second-tier platform for Australian senior soccer to be established in each state by 2014. Ballarat president James Winton said the club had been heading towards this opportunity for the past decade. “Both the current and previous boards have moved the club to a position where we can launch a persuasive bid to be the region’s National Premier Leagues club,” Winton said. “There is a real excitement around what we can achieve for the sport and we are fully committed to delivering this opportunity for football in the western region.” Ballarat has called on experienced soccer administrator Andrew Burgess to chair the licence bid. “I’m excited to be once again involved with the club and I look forward to working with a united board and corporate group to turn this vision into a reality,” Burgess said. “Without doubt, securing a place in the NPLV will be a major step forward for not just the club but football generally in the region.” Football Federation Victoria has described the NPLV as the ultimate league for aspiring talented players in the state. “The powerhouse clubs of Victorian football have all expressed interest in securing a place. In less than 12 months, football fans in the region will see our junior, youth, women’s and men’s squads playing against the best of the best that this state can turn out,” Burgess said. See your ad here “Ballarat versus South Melbourne in Ballarat, at a new stadium, with a crowd of 2000 plus for Saturday night football. Now that is worth getting excited about.” FFV will support clubs during the application process, with an announcement of those successful expected in early September. Expressions of interest for the NPLV licence close on May 31. http://www.thecourier.com.au/story/1485728/soccer-ballarat-red-devils-seek-licence-for-national-premier-leagues/?cs=63

Can Ballarat do anything with letting Moneghetti getting his fingers all over it? I've never known anyone who big notes themselves so much! We do need the money to complete Morshead Park and the Asian Cup bid is the perfect way to ensure it, but come on! Surely the looking footballing community can make enough noise without bloody Mona getting involved.

Moneghetti backs the bid By MICHAEL POLLOCK April 30,, 2013 SPORTING legend Steve Moneghetti is the face of Ballarat’s bid to bring international soccer to the city. The all-time distance running great was yesterday unveiled as the ambassador for the “Back the Bid” campaign – aimed at completing the multimillion-dollar Ballarat Regional Football Facility at Morshead Park ahead of the 2015 Asian Cup. Moneghetti’s key roles will be to promote the campaign, which hopes to culminate in Ballarat hosting a nation in the lead-up to the Cup in December 2014-January 2015. Ballarat mayor John Burt and “Back the Bid” chairman Duncan Smith were also on hand to launch the campaign logo, which uses the Eureka flag as the focal point. “I hope to give the campaign more of an international flavour,” Moneghetti said. “I like to think that I offer the bid some credibility, and hopefully my name is more of a household link in some of the Asian countries,” he said. With $5.3 million required to complete the facility, Ballarat City Council has submitted an application for a $2.675 million dollar-for-dollar grant from the federal government’s Regional Development Australia Fund. Smith labelled the construction of the facility as a “marathon” effort, with the complex entering its fifth year of development. “This is a fantastic day for football in Ballarat,” Smith said. “This facility will touch many, many people in Ballarat over the years, and the community is the real beneficiary of this.” If the funding is approved, Smith expects the facility to be completed by July next year. michael.pollock@fairfaxmedia.com.auhttp://www.thecourier.com.au/story/1469376/moneghetti-backs-the-bid/?cs=63

Radojevic goal takes Vikings to third on ladder By TIm O'Connor April 15, 2013, 8:30 p.m. VIKINGS remain one of four undefeated teams in the Football Federation Victoria men’s state league five competition following a 1-0 victory away from home on Saturday. The Sebastopol-based outfit travelled to take on Melbourne City and returned with all three points thanks to a first-half goal from Matt Radojevic. A long throw caught out the City defenders, and Radojevic was on hand to get a touch and force the ball into the net. The win leaves Vikings third on the table ahead of a clash with fellow unbeaten rivals Brimbank Stallions at St Georges Reserve this weekend. Vikings coach Michael Busija said once in front, his team adapted and worked hard to defend its lead. “I was really pleased with this one,” Busija said. “(Round one against Spring Hills) kind of felt a bit like an anti-climax because the side we played weren’t that crash hot. "This was why we joined this competition – to test ourselves against better sides and have to grind out results. You don’t get those kind of situations in the local competition. The first game was a bit of a gimme, but this is what we are about and why we came here.” Busija, who played in the reserves’ 4-2 defeat, said it was now a tough task to find room for the four key players who missed the weekend’s fixture. Things will no doubt get tougher for the Vikings in coming weeks, particularly in a round five clash against Point Cook, which features former Socceroos Joe Spiteri and Danny Tiatto. http://www.thecourier.com.au/story/1434024/radojevic-goal-takes-vikings-to-third-on-ladder/?cs=63
