A man has been stabbed during a vicious brawl after an A-League soccer match at Moore Park in Sydney’s inner city.

Police said a number of men became involved in a fight after leaving the match between Sydney FC and Melbourne Victory at Allianz Stadium about 10.15pm on Saturday.

A man, aged in his 20s, was stabbed in the torso and three other men were injured during the fight outside the Bat and Ball Hotel at the intersection of South Dowling and Cleveland Streets.

An hotel employee said about 30 people were involved in the fight, which lasted for 10 minutes.

He said he saw a number of scuffles break out between a group of Melbourne Victory fans and another group of young people who were not wearing soccer jerseys.

"They didn’t seem to know each other. It was a group of Melbourne Victory fans being attacked by a group of youths who were not in colours," the employee said.

He said the group of young men had been waiting for the fans.

Riot squad officers and mounted police reportedly attended the scene and streets were closed to traffic.

The man who was stabbed was taken to St Vincent’s Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

A spokesman for St Vincent’s Hospital said the man was in a stable condition.

Three other men, one aged 18 and two in their 20s, were also taken to hospital suffering minor injuries sustained during the brawl.

They were in a stable condition, the spokesman said.

Police arrested a 16-year-old male at the scene and he was taken to Redfern Police Station where he was assisting with inquiries as investigations into the incident continue.

Soccer fans around the country expressed their disbelief about the brawl on Twitter.

Fingers crossed this kid (perp) wasn't at the game/ wasn't a Sydney fan, as seems to be the case.

Not turning this into a club vs club thing but if we're basing this off the fact that the group weren't wearing colours then that's a very tenuous link at best imo. As monumentally stupid as this whole thing is I don't think these guys would be stupid enough to wear something so distinctive as team colours, not to mention the fact that if they are wanna be ultras they would have been dressed casual anyway.

To be honest I was being a little optimistic. However, there was a level of obnoxious behaviour shown by SOME victory fans at the game tonight, that would be enough to set off a stupid kid (on something) if they came across them in the street.
Not to say that obnoxious behaviour wasn't going both ways, and I'm not implicating all or even most Victory fans. However I did see a few small examples of some over zealousness from some younger guys, which could have contributed to the event after the game, should they have crossed the wrong kid.

It's all retarded at the end of the day. Theres a lack of maturity and respect. The best thing about football in this country is that you can passionately support your club, but then expect that no matter what happens, you can still stand in the same vicinity of some opposition supporters and not have any issue... of late, this appears to have gone well and truly out the window

Sydney FC have singlehandedly put back football a decade because of this incident.

Can't wait for strip searches and metal detectors at the doors now.
