Mexico aiming for world cup final spot Monday, June 09, 2014 - 10:54 AM Giovani Dos Santos, one of the pillars of the Mexico team at the age of just 25, believes his team actually came out strengthened from a complicated qualifying group for the World Cup - and is now aiming for nothing less than a place in the final. "What became obvious to us in the qualifying round is that no team is easy to beat these days, and that you have to work hard in matches to get good results," the Villarreal striker told German press agency dpa. "Obviously this made us more united and today we know we are stronger than before," Mexico was on the brink of failing to qualify for the World Cup finals for the first time in 24 years, and had to beat New Zealand in the play-offs in order to book their ticket to Brazil. Dos Santos has faith that the group of players which won the gold medal at the 2012 Olympics in London can turn in a historic performance at the World Cup. "These are players who have a winning mentality thanks to having won different titles, like the Olympic gold medal and the Under-17 world championship (in Peru in 2005). This is a special generation," said Dos Santos, who is one of the 10 players from the 2012 triumph in the World Cup squad. http://www.sportsfan.com.au/mexico-aiming-for-world-cup-final-spot/tabid/91/newsid/133997/default.aspx

Mexico face tricky World Cup Mexico squad Goalkeepers: Jose de Jesus Corona (Cruz Azul), Guillermo Ochoa (Ajaccio), Alfredo Talavera (Toluca) Defenders: Miguel Layun (America), Carlos Salcido (Tigres), Paul Aguilar (America), Andres Guardado (Bayer Leverkusen), Hector Moreno (Espanyol), Francisco Javier Rodriguez (America), Diego Reyes (Porto), Rafael Marquez (Leon). Midfielders: Miguel Angel Ponce (Toluca), Jose Juan Vazquez (Leon), Javier Aquino (Villarreal), Hector Herrera (Porto), Isaac Brizuela (Toluca), Marco Fabian (Cruz Azul), Carlos Pena (Leon). Forwards: Oribe Peralta (Santos), Javier Hernandez (Manchester United), Giovani dos Santos (Villarreal), Raul Jimenez (America), Alan Pulido (Tigres). Fixtures 13th June v Cameroon (Natal) 17th June v Brasil (Fortaleza) 23rd June v Croatia (Recife) Strengths The Mexicans posses good technical ability and speed. Boss Miguel Herrera has overseen a mini-revival since his takeover, providing tactical discipline and motivation. They go to Brazil under no pressure, which could play to their favour. Weaknesses A slow defence and a midfield lacking in physical presence, they could struggle against stronger sides. They struggled in qualifying and the team has had little time to gel under Herrera. Key Player Oribe Peralta. The Santos Laguna forward helped Mexico to Olympic gold in 2012. He looks sharp and has considerably more playing time that Chicharito. Prediction They could be in a battle for second place with Croatia but most likely to fall short. Third in the group seems like a sensible bet. Odds 150/1 http://www.givemesport.com/473297-mexico-face-tricky-world-cup?autoplay=on

Mexico aren't in any sort of form if qualifying is to go by. Should be close, or completely open affair :D

Yeah, these are the sorts of match ups I look forward to at World Cups. Both are talented teams, with some talented players, from differing parts of the world, but rising to a similar status and therefore relatively even, toe-to-toe. One can hardly predict the result and it could go either, or any, way!
What can Eto'o, Alex Song and co conjure versus Hernandez, Dos Santos, Guardado and co?

I think Mexico will win this one. It'd be nice to see an African team do well, though.

Keep an eye on Choupo-Moting and Cédric Djeugoué must be a decent kid at 21, starting and based in Cameroon when they have Matip of Schalke on the bench.

Does the Australian broadcast get the lineups with the players folding their arms? Assou-Ekotto with a great smile there.

WTF? Apparently a foul by the Mexico 6 in the box. According to the German commentary. Two Mexico goals not given. Disgraceful refereeing.

So Giovani Dos Santos literally couldn't pick up a root in a brothel at the moment. Friday the 13th certainly a curse for him.

Mexico have surprised me massively. They're playing really well. It'll be massively important to press like this in their other two games of course.
