The tactical battle here detracted rather than added to the overall game. Mulvey continued with Broich as a false nine but the German was not as influential, partly because the Victory centre-backs did a good job defending proactively against him, and partly because Brisbane had less possession – which came as a result of an overall shift in strategy, towards a more pragmatic, cautious approach.

The caricature being painted is that this was ‘classic City’ – lots of chances, a failure to convert, and awful defensive errors. It’s not far from the truth, for they were creating chances at 0-0 and getting in behind Wellington’s back four with quick, purposeful counter-attacks, an approach that clearly suits what is obviously Van’t Schip’s first-choice front three.

This wasn’t a particularly great game, with the quality not helped by the ferocious storm that drenched the pitch an hour before kick-off. The first half was notable for the mini-battle between the Wanderers pressing and Brisbane’s risky attempts to play out, where the Roar had the slight upper hand thanks to Henrique’s movement upfield, which dragged Cole forward.
In the second half, the Wanderers comfortably controlled the tempo and possession, and threatened sporadically without outright dominating.

I've started a new thread on types of pressing, based on your info.
It is pretty significant in understanding and coaching football at higher levels.
