The sad thing is that the people who probably caused the stampede and deserve to have their stupid genetics wiped from the earth most likely survived, while all the old people who couldn't escape copped the brunt

And the racism card is ludicrous. This could have been a very interesting thread helping others uncover the hypocrisy and cover ups that all religions are involved in but use their God as a get out of jail guilt free card

Some atheists seem to believe they hold all the answers to the universe and its mysteries. They are simply compelled to let everyone know how "intelligent" and superior they are. I imagine a lot of them are just parroting their indoctrinated beliefs not unlike ironically, an overzealous religious person completely ignorant of other points of view.

I'm agnostic myself, I think science and its study is great but it is not incorruptible for political or monetary gain much like religion. Religion is never given credit for positive things like community building and support. A practice of moral code and structure or influence on great art like the Sistine chapel for example.

Militant atheists love to come out and point accusing fingers at "god" and religious people when great tragedies like this occur, some of it not without merit but science gets a free pass on nuclear weapons for instance.

Then there are the atheist hypocrites like Bill Maher who wears his Jewishness very secretly. He constantly derides Muslims, Christianity and Catholics yet deceptively experiences his Jewishness very deeply.

The irony of it is that the state of Israel was established by the opposite of forming a queue.

And, even though I'm anti-Zionist, that's not a cheap dig, just an observation. As it happens, I think Golda Meir was very decent (or that which I know about her).

Everything is either "right wingers" or "zionists" . Throw in "conspiracy" and you the trifecta.

"Some atheists seem to believe they hold all the answers to the universe and its mysteries."

Does anyone else see the irony of this statement being used to criticise atheists compared to the religious?

Let me spell it out again - at its very basic level religion relies on the belief in something that CANNOT ever be proven - this is crucial to keep in mind. Religion is defined by faith. And what is faith? It is belief in something that CANNOT be proven with evidence. If you could prove it, then it would just become fact, and faith would be irrelevant.

Without faith religion doesn't exist.

Atheism is not e belief system, it is based on a rational approach to the world. Atheists don't "believe" there is no god. Atheists look at the evidence and say "there is no need to create a god to explain how the world works, and there is no evidence suggesting a supernatural creator. Therefore, based on the facts as we know them - my conclusion is that god does not exist (or at least it is so unlikely as to enable such a conclusion)".

This may seem pedantic, but it is crucially different.

The problem with religion is that they will actively deny reality if they can't shoe horn it into the belief system.

Atheists, basing their opinion on evidence, are open to revise their conclusion should the evidence change.

You might say "well how about all the kind things people do based on religion?" My response is that those people are just nice people. They would be nice with or without religious belief. If they were really acting nice out of some idea of gaining brownie points to avoid hell, then they would just be acting selfishly for their own eternal benefit!

And you cannot deny the fact that in ANY society where religions are powerful, they are just as cruel if not more cruel than secular rulers - mainly because they have the extra confidence that god is on their side. There are the obvious examples of ISIS, child abusing priests, forced religious conversions of native populations, denying the fact that the earth revolves around the sun for hundreds of years etc etc. We only see the nice side of religions here because we don't take religious belief seriously anymore in our society - churches are stripped of their power.

You can point to things like the Sistene Chapel. I could just as easily point to the Spanish Inquisition. I could also point to the pre-Christian monuments and artwork of the Romans and the Greeks.

The point is religion isn't doing any of this, people are. And if you have a belief system that opposes rational investigation of the world, and imposes a dogma based on the scrawling of desert tribesman 2,000+ years ago, that is a problem.

If you want a legitimate criticism of Bill Maher (rather than idiotic anti-jewish tinfoil hat wearing conspiracies) - my problem with him is that he indulges anti-vaxxer viewpoints.

From memory he also indulges in anti-GMO quackery. So I don't trust him to actually take a rational approach to things. He tends to just follow whatever opinions he agrees with.

He makes some good points.

Interesting read, but it did get a bit rants at times.
Saying things like 'only being nice to earn heaven browny points' isn't accurate for Christianity, but it is for Islam or Hinduism. Saying that we only see the nice things now because people no longer take religious belief seriously, is a bit outrageous  Googling the end of British slavery might be a helping pointer there ;)

Your last point is true however. Anything opposing rational investigation is probably a very bad thing, but I don't think Christianity at its core discourages rational investigation, the bible is the most studied text the world will ever see, across all different periods and methods of thought. To be a little more external than that though, I really don't think Christianity opposes a rational exploration of the world though.

The Christians on the Kansas Board of Education disagree with this.

Also Texans. (They approve the content for textbooks in that state which are adopted US wide.)

Won't start on Fred Nile whose sins are too numerous to mention with regards to the above.

Some Christians are rational, others are (funda)mental. Unfortunately your fundamental, evangelical types are disproportionately represented.

When did I ever indicate that I was a free-marketeer?

The topic isn't as much insensitive as it is cretinous. God works in mysterious ways because he doesn't exist. End.

"Unshackled's" post was a rambling shambles. Like you I started on a rebuttal but you could have spent hours taking his diatribe to pieces so I gave it a miss.

I will say using an example of the Sistine Chapel shows either wilful or just plain ignorance of the times these artists lived in. Just about the only way an artist could make a living back then was to work for the church. It's hardly surprising that the great works of yore in the Renaissance are religiously inspired when it was the church that bloody paid for them in the first place.

As for some of the other stuff simply ludicrous.

Atheists, by definition, accept that they don't know everything. That's the whole point.

Bill Maher was raised in a roman catholic household who regularly attended church. He was unaware of his mother's jewishness until he was a teenager. His mother is not religious. He has criticised Judaism in the past.

Anyone who is intellectually honest with themselves can see quite clearly where his allegiances lie.

Really?

Aren't all Christians judged when they die to see whether they're going to Hell, Heaven or Purgatory.

By living life so that at death you are friends with God. This means that you die without mortal sin on your soul and live life so as to avoid mortal sin. But if we sin we must confess mortal sin to a priest in the sacrament of confession with true repentence and avoid it in the future.

Anyway Atheists are sweet. Just ask Popey Francis. http://www.catholic.org/news/hf/faith/story.php?id=51077
