Geez. That isn't good. I am hoping that they win too.

Same with me.

The only reason I want fire to win is cause fury are heat is a derby and i always go for fury and they never beat them

Im fine with Cairns. I hope fury come back soon but the Heat have shown initiative.

Sunshine Coast are the better team. We all know that.

I'd like to see Sunshine Coast and Heat in the Cup. They have potential A/A2-League potential one day.

Obviously on-field success doesn't equal a licence, but seeing them do well in the Cup might help boost their player numbers, members, commercial appeal, attendances, etc, which might all be taken into account as the football pyramid slowly grows upwards.

100% agreed.

Same. Good to see new clubs get in there, but also awesome to see Strikers, Blacktown and Sydney United. Thats a fair bit of effort for them to do it 3 years now. Would be good to see them get past R16.

Surfers Paradise find ally in match scheduling to get three players back for FFA Cup

SOCCER: Surfers Paradise coach David Benigno is thanking Football Gold Coast for a fortunate piece of match rescheduling that worked perfectly in his favour.

The fixture change has allowed Surfers to get three key players back for the big FFA Cup regional qualifier against Sunshine Coast at Lex Bell Oval on Saturday.

A Round 8 Coast Premier League match between Surfers Paradise and Mudgeeraba had been transferred to May 31 and it came in very handy for the Apollo.

Surfers had three players suspended from the fiery 0-0 draw with Broadbeach United, played on May 28.

They were centre back Jean-Philippe Lasm, winger Brandon Gomez and central midfielder Davide Landoni.

The trio all had to serve a one-match suspension, which they did for the Mudgeeraba fixture, and are now free to line up against Sunshine Coast in the biggest match in the history of Surfers.

“With last weekend’s matches washed out we were very lucky we had that game against Mudgeeraba for them to serve their suspensions,” Benigno said. “Otherwise they all would have been ineligible.”

More good news for the Apollo is the pending return of captain Bruno Rodriguez for his first match since copping a badly broken nose in the club’s last FFA Cup qualifier against South West Queensland.

“He’s OK, he’s been training the house down,” Benigno said. Meanwhile, Gold Coast City’s washed-out NPL Queensland fixture against Western Pride last weekend has been rescheduled for Friday night at Mallawa Drive (8pm kick-off).

Premier League rookies Shamrock Rovers meet NT soccer giants Darwin Olympic for Cup honours
10 minutes ago
GREY MORRISNT News

Shamrock Rovers are ready for the game of their lives in tonight’s FFA Cup qualifier against Darwin Olympic.
SHAMROCK Rover manager Jimmy Culligan has a dream and most of it concerns his Norzone Premier League rookies playing in the FFA Cup round of 32.

The Rovers meet Territory soccer giants Darwin Olympic at Marrara’s Darwin Football Stadium for the right to meet an Alice Springs club in the NT qualifier.

“It’s all gone really well, especially in our second year and first in the Premier League,’’ Culligan told the NT News.

“It’s huge for us and it would be a dream come true if we can win the final and get a chance to play for a spot in the round of 32.

“We know there’s a tough task ahead of us and Olympic are a very good side. They’re a well put together team with players who have been together for years.

“Their new English boys are really stringing the passes together and that’s how it all works in football, you’ve got to stop them in the middle where you can break them down.’’

The rags to riches story has moved into overdrive with the confident Rovers players posing for photos on teammate Simon Bell’s Stretch Hummer from his Darwin Deluxe Limousines.

Culligan said playing five across the middle will be difficult for his side, meaning they would have to drag one of their strikers back.

“That kind of makes for a defensive game when we would prefer to have two strikers so we can have a go at them and they have a go at us.’’

Olympic’s assistant coach Wayne Bodkin is happy to hand the favouritism tag to the Rovers.

The Reds went all the way to the main draw last year and Bodkin wants a repeat.

“We’re there to play our own game and focus on how we want the boys to play, we can’t buy into the hype everybody is putting around the Rovers,’’ he said.

“We hold the Chief Minister’s Cup for the Territory winner and it’s our intention to win it again and represent the NT again in the Cup.’’

The Reds have scored 25 goals in their last three games, a figure Bodkin called “pretty amazing’’.

“We’re hitting form at the right time, despite the disappointment of having Jason (Stokes) sent off in the last minute of the game last week for something I witnessed and listened to many other players do during the game.

“For him to get sent off was a bit disappointing, but we move on and bring in a young lad in Dane Turner who gets a chance to shine in a big final.’’

I know that name... a Simon Bell used to play for Northern Spirit, I remember watching him at North Sydney Oval... he was a black guy with short blonde hair and I remember being amazed once as he dribbled through about three players. I had a panini-style card with his picture on it. :D

All I can find on him is that he went to Marconi before the NSL wound up. Don't think it's the same guy here as he'd be about 38 now.
