Yet another victim of our pharmaceutical state. Needed support and guidance when he asked for it dramatically in 2011, instead he was doped up and turned into a time bomb by the government for a quick buck.

Well we shouldnt  gut the medical funding that  we surely need, too many people who have mental  health issues are lost due to lack of staff and or proper help. 2 we need to fix our court systems as its apparent to everyone its broken but both sets of governments all ark up about  policing and yet gut funding for it.

Isn't this indicative of a deeper issue with mental health issues being a product of a root cause? Causes may be family violence, unstable home life, drugs etc.

It is, sadly we just go round in circles as its easier for governments  to come out and say things need to change and yet first thing  they do is cut funding for health  and preventation . We as a nation  need to ask our governments on why  they say one thing but do the opposite of what they said. its easy to be populist its harder to actually do what you say you're  gonna do

Demand for government services are at an all time high. It's hard to fund existing problems without redirecting funds towards other things. It's not like we have a stash for stuff like this. What suffers to make funds for this type of thing?

Colour me surprised. I assume this is why the RBB haven't been turning out in strong numbers recently. Working around the clock in their drug kitchens.

Indeed they seem to be.  (Not only Sydney.) Here'some links of the latest ones that I'll put in the Australian News thread.

http://www.smh.com.au/nsw/execution-of-sydney-crime-figure-hamad-assaad-unfolded-in-front-of-police-surveillance-20161105-gsiye5.html

Mr Assaad was no stranger to conflict and enemies, having been suspected of carrying out shootings against some of Sydney's prominent figures and their relatives.

Ahmad had been well known to police for more than a decade as a prominent figure in south-western Sydney's criminal scene.
At the time of his death, he was the subject of at least one extortion investigation and a murder probe.

Peters Dutton is copping all kinds of flack for stating undisputed facts. Apparently he should have ignored them like everyone else.

I think the problem is that he is stereotyping and generalising.

"The advice I have is that out of the last 33 people who have been charged with terrorist-related offences in this country, 22 of those people are from second and third generation Lebanese-Muslim background"

Nothing wrong here, he is simply stating a stat (we'll assume that it is correct/factual). The problem was that he then implies by allowing Lebanese/Muslims into the country during the 1970's as a part of an immigration policy was "wrong". This unfairly labels them all as "terrorists". Many thousands of these migrants have made positive contributions to the Australian community since their immigration. He probably should have been more specific about what he thought was "wrong" about the immigration policy in the 1970's (but specifics may have condemned him even more).

Dutton has come out today to defend his comments, with the following:

"The vast majority of Lebanese-Australians are law-abiding, hard-working, good, decent people who are besmirched by a small element within their community who are doing the wrong thing"

Which again is a balanced and informed comment, however not sure what this has to do with his original comments regarding immigration in the 1970's. He said mistakes were made ... yet has not elaborated on what he means by that, thus his original comments still across as suggesting that allowing migrants from Lebanon at that time was a mistake. Which is what most took umbrage to.

They're artists ... they either want to push the boundaries, express themselves or do anything for attention.

Nothing wrong with the topless performance, if we can't be comfortable with the human body then we probably need to have a good hard look at ourselves (in the mirror)!

I personally don't like electronic music, but the ARIA's aren't decided by me ... so if the Australian people bought their music and so forth can't really complain can we.

Not really surprising Sia's "stunt" either ... she uses it more as an attention grabber than a statement nowadays (her no show or turning to face away ... getting a bit old).

I love this quote by the government health minister:

"The Australian government will never legalise a drug that destroys brain function, mental wellbeing, general health, employment, relationships, lives and families."

Well then why is alcohol legal under the Australian government??

Cigarettes "destroy" general health too ... pretty sure they are legal under the Australian government.

Also what the Greens actually want is not to legalise marijuana, the article actually states "The Greens want a new independent national regulatory authority to assess and reduce the harm of illicit drugs - an approach that would likely lead to the decriminalisation or legalisation of drugs like cannabis."

The crux of the argument in my mind is stated in the second paragraph by the AMA rep: "Association president Michael Gannon told Fairfax Media he welcomed any initiative that shifted the public conversation about illicit drugs towards rehabilitation and treatment instead of policing and the justice system" Under the current government (and past) we have never even gone close to this ... drugs should be a health issue not a law enforcement issue.

I'd want it legalized solely for the revenue it'd raise lol.

Look at some of the figures that have been produced in America, albeit with larger populations of course.

That's the kinda stuff that pays for roads, schools, hospitals etc.
