Anastasiadis backs calls for A-League Division Two as clubs look to build for future

National Premier League Victoria winning coach John Anastasiadis and his  vice-captain Luke Pilkington have added their voices to the growing clamour for the FFA to establish a national second division sooner rather than later.

Anastasiadis guided Bentleigh Greens to their second National Premier League Victoria championship in three years when they defeated minor premiers Heidelberg 2-1 after extra time in Sunday night's grand final at Lakeside and immediately said  the club needed new targets  to keep the players focussed and striving to improve.

"We are holding out for a second division. We have done everything possible in this NPL  and now we are hoping the powers that be will make some decision  in the upcoming months," said Anastasiadis, a coach who has little left to prove in this grade of the game.

"You can only give the guys so many motives. We have won the grand final, won the minor premiership and had a run in the FFA Cup," he said, pointing to Bentleigh's achievements in recent years, a highlight of which was a semi final appearance against Perth Glory in the first FFA Cup competition of 2014.

"We want to get more professional to give these guys a reason to come to training.

"We don't think small, we think big. We are a suburban club. We don't have the history of a South Melbourne or a Heidelberg, but we want to establish ourselves, our own club and a professional system."

Pilkington is these days mixing a warehouse job with studying for a Masters Degree in Business (Sports Management) at Deakin University. He formerly worked as a stockbroker - but he would love to have a second chance to play football as a professional, even at his relatively advanced age of 27.

The Canberra-born midfielder/defender had a  taste of it for a two-year period in 2009-2011 when he was on the roster at Melbourne Victory, having been given an opportunity by Ernie Merrick after winning a Football Superstar competition on Foxtel.

"I was young back then with Victory. If you do get the limelight of a second division they [players]  will be knocking on doors. It's a question  of getting the funding.  We are very close, it's just a question of biting the bullet and doing it. The second tier is very close, I think."

Sceptics will point to Bentleigh's recent 4-0 FFA Cup loss to Western Sydney Wanderers and say the gulf is too great, but Pilkington argues that.

"I don't think the gap was that big against the Wanderers. It's the second moments [in games] that determine those results. We have all come from eight hours work that day .... it's the lapses in concentration or the final 10 minutes when you are 2-0 down,"  he said, explaining how the score blew out as tiredness crept in.

In a full-time professional environment that tiredness and those mistakes would be less likely to occur, he says.

George Katsakis, boss of losing team Heidelberg, now has to pick his players up and prepare them for their upcoming FFA Cup quarter-final against A-League side Adelaide United on Wednesday night.

The team were badly shaken on grand final day by the death that morning of board member John Loukakos and it did throw a huge dampner over the whole grand final experience, Katsakis said.

I still can't see how bentleigh would be a viable walk up start for a 2nd division, they literally had 20-30 fans at last nights grand final, like a couple of years ago the stadium was empty when they lifted the trophy, and the club is crap outside of the senior men's team.

But if they can afford their number of fans shouldnt determine entry. They have earned entry on merit.

how are these clubs going to improve if they don't push themselves? we as a country should be encouraging this, to make a name for themselves.

we need more clubs and we need more games in the a-league. having a long offseason sucks and we need a good 10 month season so our players can play more and develop

Heidelberg v Bentleigh just a shade off 30k views on FB. What were Souths numbers...oh.

Anyway. APIA v Manly United had 25k

Melbourne Knights v Dandenong City 20k

Great numbers in the stands too to compliment these numbers. Great job all round.

This is about club viability, how does a team that has a fan base of 30 (based on last night) manage to become a sustainable outfit in a higher tier? They put nothing into the juniors, they have no women's wing to speak of, the under 20s are ordinary, it's basically a few money men bankrolling a senior side.

Heidelberg would be so far ahead of them on every criteria.

Bentleigh needs to become a more all round club that takes every aspect of its club seriously, because right now they are doing nothing that your Altona magics etc did before them in Victoria.

I dare say Heidelberg and the knights would have generated most of those fb views. Just like last weeks 23k for south v bentleigh semi.

Did they drag in 7k more viewers or did Heidelberg being in its first grand final for over a decade drag it in? I went along last night but it sure as hell wasnt to see them, and based on the crowd ratio neither did anyone else. Either way they have no chance of entry into a criteria based 2nd tier as they are now.

if john anastasiadis wants more motivation he should go back to where it all started and get Heidelberg a title, he's a gun coach but it's hardly a challenge when he has the biggest budget in Victoria. As soon as he goes bentleigh will slide.

You should change your mind because what you are saying now is why people say SM shouldnt be in the AL.

No criteria has been released for either so what are you talking about?

South shouldn't be in the A league, we are a 2nd division club at best in this era. We have had just as much on field success as bentleigh but haven't proven jack shit to be considered for top flight inclusion, our npl titles mean nothing in the grand scheme of things other then the fact we are highly competitive in our division.

I just disagree that if you have had the same amount of success they should be in a division below you (once a national 2nd division is formed).

There's no way around it - if the 2nd division is to be a professional competition then all competitors - whether existing clubs or start-up franchises - need to be able to demonstrate viability.  Not just first team, but women's side, youth side(s), etc.  As southmelb said - Bentleigh have a senior side and virtually nothing more.

I'd agree with you that the size of their crowds and the quality of their venue shouldn't really matter - but their operating model (a couple of wealthy patrons) doesn't point toward long term viability...  Important to note that these patrons, whilst wealthy enough to fund an expensive NPL side, couldn't fund a full time professional side year after year...  And with no other major sources of income, they would collapse.

I dont expect the initial league to be professional.

I am open to clubs collapsing.... or giving clubs a chance to succeed. There would hopefully be a mechanism in place for clubs to return to state NPL.

I just dont think we are at the point where we should be talking about a professional 2nd div, so it shouldnt be limited to clubs that could go pro today. Clubs can be sold and sponsored, make good investments.

Like I said to him, we should wait for the agreed upon criteria presented by AAFC first. Remember the South Hobart president is on their board and im sure she is looking to get them in. Would their case be that much better than Greens on paper? Greens could at least claim away support revenue.

Realistically they're a top 2-3 candidate, no disrespect to knights but heidelberg have gone past them and are now the clear number 2 in this state..the village has huge potentia about to receive an upgrade in facilities and the location is very good. They would position themselves well to be melbournes north/north east rep in a 2nd tier.

If a criteria for minimum seating was stated for entry to div2, how many seats could Heidelberg fit in the grandstand?

In the 90s the seating stretched across most of the grandstand and was considered to be around the 4,000 mark, in the late 90s they removed most of them. Currently they have about a thousand...obviously they could put the extras back in if required.

Im sure HU would want to join a 2nd div but have they made any statements about it?

SM, MK, Hume and Bentleigh have all talked about AL or 2nd div entry/intention.

MK only avoided relegation after winning a playoff so maybe they should concentrate on being a second div side for now

Northern Fury Ltd announcing their new licence for the 2018 NPLQ competition earlier this year. L-R David Minuzzo (Director, North Qld Fury Ltd), Sirio Bertucci (Acting President North Qld Fury Ltd), Glenn Mintern (Director).

Fury name and colours to be dropped from NQ Football’s NPL team

THE Northern Fury are no more.

North Queensland Football will unveil a new identity for the region’s NPL side at a press conference tomorrow morning.

NQ Football has taken over the state league licence from 2018 and will give an official update on the club’s direction at Brolga Park, including the search for a coach and technical director along with the team’s name, logo, and colours.

The new licence holders will move away from the Northern Fury identity and Football Queensland has confirmed such an application was made by NQ Football.

NQ Football chairman Sirio Bertucci would not comment when contacted today but said the new board had made a decision based on community feedback.

NQ Football has run a community survey over the past months to gauge public support for a possible change to the club’s existing name, colours, and logo.

The Fury brand was revived as a state league club in 2013 after competing in the A-League as the North Queensland Fury from 2008-2011.

The club name and colours caused a major disagreement between the former Fury board and NQ Football in October last year when NQ Football declared its intentions to take over the NPL licence.

The two governing bodies called a truce in February to join forces and launch a single bid for the licence, with NQ Football ultimately taking ownership with a new board.

NQ Football had previously indicated that they would consider keeping the Fury’s name and colours, with Bertucci telling the Bulletin in May: “the colours are there, the logo is there, so we don’t want to start from scratch.”

“The old Fury this year are doing quite well, there’s a lot of good people who want to come across, so with that platform I think we’ve got a head start,” he said

Former Fury NPL coach Paul Roncato, who guided the Fury through its best season this year, said he felt deflated at the Fury’s loss of name and colours.

“It is disappointing,” he said.

“When the transition to NQ Football was taking place I thought the agreement was the Fury name and colours would remain.

“Sadly that’s not going happen and the colours and name will be changed.”

Roncato said there was widespread disappointment during the Fury’s end of season presentation night held last weekend.

“There were a few emotional speeches, especially from (former Fury coaching staff) Ken and Bill Mitchell and it’s sad to see the end of those five years,” he said.

“It goes right back to the Fury A League days, and everywhere we went down south people knew the name.

“There’s a fair bit of discontent among the players, especially over the fact no one really seems to know what’s going on.

“I’d hate to see it fall apart.

“But I really do hope that NQ Football builds on what the Fury have done, I can’t express that point enough.”

Roncato said he would remain a passionate supporter of the region’s NPL side and would likely continue his career coaching one of NQ Football’s premier league clubs.

“I’ve been in contact with a couple of them, and I’m happy to coach premier league,” he said.

“I haven’t made a decision, but my passion for football is as strong as ever.”

Let's hope this is the case. It really is.

As is Western Pride.

Yup spot on.
