Funny old story.
Is 43 all of them ?  If not why not ?

43 southeast soccer clubs back Team 11 bid for A-League team in Dandenong

JULY 14, 2018

DOZENS of southeast soccer clubs have backed the region’s bid to bring an A-League and W-League team to the local area.

Team 11’s bid has so far been supported by 43 local clubs, ranging in size from Berwick City, with more than 900 players, to Sandown Lions with 40 members.

The backing comes from clubs in the National Premier League, Victorian state leagues, Latrobe Valley Soccer League, Gippsland Soccer League, the Victorian Churches Football Association, Bayside Football Association and Melbourne Chinese Soccer Association.

Team 11 Project Officer Matt Windley said they would work with the clubs to establish a relationship between grassroots and professional football if the A-League push was successful.

“This club will be nothing without the backing of the local football community,” he said.

“The support received so far has been incredible and we can’t thank enough the tireless efforts of the volunteers who run these clubs to help Team 11’s bid.”

Zakarya Shojaie, president of Dandenong based Afghan Victory, said a professional club belonged in the most multicultural area in Australia.

“To have a club here where we can provide greater encouragement for our kids to achieve their dreams as elite footballers would be amazing,” he said.

Casey Comets president Dawn Stone said the support showed the importance of the bid to the community.

Football Federation Australia will decide on the two new teams by October 31.

If Team 11 is successful, a 15,000 seat stadium will be built in Dandenong to house the team and a $38 million training hub will be built at Casey Fields.

Former Head of the A-League, Archie Fraser, runs the rule over the 10 successful shortlisted bidders for expansion and gives his verdict on which two teams will make the final cut.

ARCHIE FRASER’S VERDICT ON THE TWO TEAMS FOR A-LEAGUE EXPANSION

South Melbourne

Established Club with a structure and stadium already in place. It would be proof and a case study for FFA that existing clubs could step up and what the process and criteria would be for this to happen in the future.

It is a low risk strategy, it delivers more local derbies and therefore more interesting content for broadcasters, FFA and the A-League brand.

Macarthur
Growing region of Sydney. More local derbies, Low cost to produce for broadcasters as its capital city based.

Low risk as this is the FFA existing model; find a multi-millionaire who can fund a club from scratch and hope he gets it right.

More than 2500 people have signed up as foundation members for the Canberra A-League side and the bid team have launched a call-to-arms to recruit volunteers to give them a physical presence in the capital.

West Melbourne Group sets sights on Geelong

A WMG spokesperson confirmed to dailyfootballshow.com that WMG has entered advanced discussions with Geelong’s Kardinia Park to host the large majority of its home games upon its initial entrance to the league, with negotiations also occurring with AAMI Park to play select games at the Melbourne venue in the event that the Geelong ground is not available.

Construction of the bid’s own privately funded, 15,000 seat stadia is planned to commence immediately should their application to join the league be accepted by the FFA, with plans for the new facility to be ready for the 2022/23 A-League season.

In the interim, the spokesperson clarified that the bid was looking to play as much of its games in the West as possible.

“We want to play at Kardinia Park because we want our club to be totally focused on supporting sport and community out West,” the spokesperson said

It's comical because, although only seperated by like a 30 minute drive along the highway, West Melbourne and Geelong are two distinct markets with their own identities. Nobody in Geelong will support a side called West Melbourne and vice versa.

These numpties really have nfi.

Thanks for the clarification, I don’t know Melbourne heaps well so that Geelong/West Melbourne thing was confusing. They did say they were for Geelong initially but was much more West Melb focused later, can I ask where Victory and City fit into all of this? I know it’s not clear cut the way Sydney is but would West Melb bid be cutting into Victory/City territory? Do Victory/City even really have a geographical area so to speak?

Given that they started as aGeelong bid for all of Vic, and now West Melb playing out if Geelong, they aren’t really set on what they want

Not to mention the amazing atmosphere 2,500 people are going to provide in an oval stadium that holds 36K. It would be completely counter productive to growing a fanbase early on.

So a bid that plans to build a 15,000 stadium is a “shit bid” just because they can’t magic a stadium out of thin air?

And a 30 minutes drive?? 😂

Roar get supporters from the GC (1 hour), Ipswich (45 minutes), Sunshine Coast (1 hour), Toowoomba (90 minutes), even Bundaberg which is nearly 4 hours ... toughen up Victorian’s.

In england some supporters will travel hours to see their team, my mates in Nottingham were travelling up to Everton every second week ffs.

That stadium at the earliest would be built in 5 years, they have no business bidding for a license next season. This bid should have been in the works years ago if they were serious.

Simple, no stadium no bid, they shouldn’t have made the shortlist ahead of Tassie once they ditched Geelong. Melbourne Knights are the only ones qualified from that side of town to put a bid in.

The running track argument continues to be silly, some of the worlds biggest clubs have one, the uefa champions league final was played at a stadium that has one. All those bids who have nothing would bite your hand off to have a venue ready right now with one.

Starting to agree that this bid is looking very 'Southern Expansion' like.

Came across this in a fan survey being conducted to help choose the club's name and colours:

ffs, does Bendigo even count as the west?

Just pick a spot and stick with it.

If you lived in Footscray would you rather travel 35-40 minutes to Tarneit or 15-20 to lakeside stadium?

They should have stuck with Geelong. A lot of these bids want to cover so much land they will end up representing nobody.

But this is on the ffa and their metrics/growth corridors bullshit. Everyone wants to emulate the Wanderers yet they cant get it through their thick skulls that West Sydney has always had the infrastracture to pull it off.

A bit optimistic getting to the Lakeside from Footscray  in 15 min most times of the day.
