And its not whether they will will produce their own vision (they can still take Fox’s feed) it’s whether they’ll overlay their own commentary and produce their own pre/post game show?

The fact they they are considering moving from one game broadcast in a secondary channel to two games on their main channel suggests they either see something or are at least hoping for something to happen.

no, what midfielder is suggesting is that Foxtel will be removed altogether and replaced with TEN and Optus.
the feed has to come from somewhere.

people praying for the demise of Fox haven't figured out that Fox is not only the daddy who pays all our bills, its also the daddy who provides all the cameras and microphones and lighting etc.

Ah yes, and that’s the production  cost Fox quote st $80k/game.

I dont see this as an issue. The EPL took on their own production and there’s no reason why the HAL wouldn’t do it as well.

i'm sceptical about the motives of Foxtel. who's to say they haven't done some fancy accounting to make it look like a loss? we all know their primary parent company pays no tax in australia and gets hundreds of millions in rebates. so who's to say this isn't a strategy to allow them to dump some unprofitable sports and put downward pressure on the TV rights of other sports they wish to retain? I'm not money expert or business expert, but i don't trust them in the slightest.

but alternately, I think the HAL going to Optus would be the best thing since sliced bread. It would be great to see it happen. as long as the HAL doesn't lose money of course.

No i did not ..what I said was this """ Wonders aloud if a 10 / Optus broadcast deal is possible and take the Fox / Telstra out...""""

HTF you can take a line essentially day dreaming about if a 10 / optus could take out Fox/ Telstra as I am suggesting its going to happen ... sorta on purpose miss representing something or can't read and understand English not sure which maybe a bit of both.

You then posted """ Wonders aloud if people are serious that TEN, who paid zero dollars last time to take Fox’s feed, and got shit ratings all year, are suddenly going to purchase cameras microphones and all the infrastructure required to broadcast games independent of Fox.  """

HHHmmmm maybe you just don't know so let me explain... most outside broadcast games these days are broadcast by specialist companies.... meaning 10 don't need to buy any equipment they pay the broadcast company a fee for it... Fox I think, remember I said I think have said they pay 60K per match and it if extend 60K per match over so we assume upwards with expansion of say 250 games with current costings thats about 150 million, 200 games 12 million. Waz knows a lot about this stuff and is far more up to date than me on this area so check with him.

I do wonder about your motives at times.

right, so you're wondering whether TEN/Optus could pay the broadcast fees for $80k per game for a 250 game season? Thats a cost of about $20M per year

And that would leave FFA with $.....0....in television revenue.

Waz even suggests the FFA can afford that bill.  i reckon youre both dreaming.

Hang on, I don’t want to get in between the two of you if you’re having a bun fight, so last Post and I’m out:

assuming a 12 team/26 Round competition.
Thats 156 games a season plus finals = 161
assuming $80,000 production cost per game (Fox’s number) then annual production costs = $12.9m.

First thing that springs to my to my mind is that’s too expensive. Fox have either got it wrong or are including other costs such as the midweek shows. Most likely they’re probably apportioning costs that should go to other production costs

But having seen their onsite onsite production teams (they’re huge) I’m sure there’s savings to be had. They have three commentators on site for example, well let’s try one instead.

I recon it could get done for $4m, maybe $6m if they’re pushing the boat out. That’s $25k to $37k/match.

If they do that they gave control. The EPL did it deliberately and for good reason - they controlled the content. HAL should too.

WAFL/SANFL/VFL broadcast costs were reported as $1 mlllion each per year  by Channel 7 for 1 match a week and shown on 7's main channel. These matches are produced by Jam TV. Concievable that broadcast costs for A-league matches could be 5x that.

At the moment the production costs are 10-12 times that number which suggests there is significant scope for cost savings.

sure, but midfielder was factoring in expansion to 250 games per year.

i don't know where you get your figures from, but i agree there should be savings to be found from broadcasting.

the point is, people hoping that foxtel go away don't seem to appreciate how important they are to the HAL - not just as THE major revenue provider to the FFA, but as the people who actually bring the pictures to our screens (by filming the games, or paying someone else to).

All good. Foxtels importance can’t be underestimated and basically the FFA allowed themselves to get dependent upon them. The risk was always Foxtel catch a cold and football gets the flu - any move will be problematic but as someone else pointed out, Foxtel are a brake on our game opposing an extended season, Dictating where expansion takes place, what time games kick off etc ... some good can come out of any move/change even though it will hurt financially.

The FFA didn't have a  lot of options.  Fox came to the party from the very start.  No one else was going to show it at the time.

Part  of the problem has been the FFAs approach to Fox - it’s almost like Gallop didn’t want to upset them in case it affected his next sports administration job in a different code.

Foxtel will show football no loyalty, FFA needed to go the same.

By now they should have had contracts in place with an STV provider, a direct and separate contract with FTA, a direct and separate contract with a mobile provider and another one with a streaming provider.

Instead they gave it all to foxtel. Utter folly.

exactly. ch 7 had the AFL rights for 40+ years before ch 9 and foxtel offered a fortune in 2001. do you think the AFL cared about loyalty?

its hardly a matter of loyalty.

the FFA showed SBS no loyalty.

the reason the FFA signed with Foxtel was because there was no-one else in the offering.  The bizarre bit was the 6 years.

I reckon foxtel pushed for 6 years. they probably knew that Optus would bid at some point. plus it was univeresally believed at the time that the deal was on the low side. People were bandying a figure of around $80-$100 million PA. seems laughable right now, but its true.

Its hard to believe that an estimated triple the normal audience would have set aside the methods they have been using to watch the league all season, and opting for an ad ridden SD coverage instead

Im being told these figures will be adjusted due to the over-run. Cops didnt really get 324,000.

263,000 on Ten and 191,000 on Fox. Plus streaming.

I would say they’re very respectable.

Taking Wookies 324K plus Fox 191 K, plus streaming would be the basic for being able to start a conversation.

The media coverage leading up to the game was limited, and given we still have not recovered ourselves from our civil war its encouraging enough to say their is still life in the old girl.

And I would say the telling comparison in that is the FTA number is holding up but the Fox number is getting crucified.

Kayo and Telstra have eaten away at Fox big time.

For comparison, numbers from GF 2 years ago (last year of SBS) below

Fox 467K
SBS 258K

725K

to be fair, that was the highest rating HAL game of all time, so thats a high mark comparison

Wookie

Do you have an update on the ratings... your last post indicated 324 K after recalculation on 10.. if we add Fox of 191 K, thats 515 K, plus streaming ??? so maybe between 550 K & 600K.

If thats anywhere near correct and you add the crowd, factor in media lead in [almost nothing by compassion to say AFL / NRL / Cricket] then it allows the new Hal board to open the door with at least a story to tell.

Could start the conversation something like this, regarding the last two to three years of civil war.

Listen close, Listen well
For I have a story to tell
It begins not here,
but two steps from hell

I am actually very excited for the new season and the independent A League. As Gough said all those years ago: "IT'S TIME!"
