There is a new emerging bid.

For the first time a Tas Premier, Peter Gutwein, seems incredibly keen on an Tasmanian based A League team. From his perspective it appears to be putting pressure on AFL, but that sport has now become a TV spectator game in Tas.

The upper echelons of the national AFL  hierarchy have succeeded in destroying the local AFL state league and  Aussie rules participation numbers in general. AFL have knocked back a team from Tas for so long, just trying to recruit a few Tas players to play for AFL clubs in other states, the local Aussie rules players are rarely rarely good enough anymore. They don't have the numbers of kids  playing the sport, so they've reduced the catchment size. 

Bob Gordon, current Football Fed Tas CEO, and former political aspirant and operator, also elucidated the current bid a few minutes ago on the radio. For  the first time potential 5 000 -10 000 rectangular stadium sites are being discussed in the Hobart area, with potential investors.

I'm not sure if that includes Belteky/Stamoulis? They were the financial  backers of a previous bid that was the best FFA had ever received, but Gallop rejected it. Thankfully, Gallop has gone and there are new FFA officials keener on spreading the game to a broader base.

Hopefully, this  reality occurs before I'm pushing up daisies!

This is a good opportunity for football to get one over the AFL.
Tassie is a footballing no man's land.
However, they should be aiming to join the NSD rather than the A-League.

The NSD, with promo/releg, would be a great start.

I watched quite a lot of  NPL last season. I hate to admit it, because some players I've  coached are playing in this league, the top  level  in Tas, but I think the standard may have slipped overall from a peak of about 3-4 years ago.

I can't  work out why? Some good coaches, don't seem to be able to  get their cattle to play better football.

Having a Tas  team in the NSD, should  improve the NPL.

 There are three scenarios. In AFL which is  left off the Aus AFL map, the standard has really declined.  Conversely, cricket and hockey, which are an integral part of the national structure, and have teams in national comps, the local league standards are improving.

You would want some guarantees of a rectangular stadium being built and what the costings of rent would be before you go ahead and do it. That has always been the Achilles heal of the Tassie bids. Especially considering no stadium means they cant ever get bigger matches like with the socceroos or Matildas (or even the rugbys) 

That has been elucidated by  Bob Gordon, and Peter Gutwein in particular - who wants to be part of any  FIFA WC and to host union and league games.

Really want to see it. 

Who on earth is going to still up the the 10 million plus for an A League team in Tasmania?

Well football Tasmania really should contribute given it will be allowing a finishing school for their talent. Likewise the state Gov should be providing ongoing support, given the tourism at economic benefits it could generate 

Nobody + the cost of a football specific stadium.  It won't happen which is why a NSD with a pathway is so important in this country.  Any team from any region, if good enough, deserves a shot.

Belteky/Stamoulis did a few years ago.

Gallop/Lowy said it was the best bid FFA had ever received when Macarthur and Western U were accepted, but  that they could have a team anywhere else except Tas. The rationale was something like Fox Sports didn't want Tas  to have a A L team because of less advertising exposure. I have inside info on this too.

Tassie got screwed more than South in the last expansion round in my oppinion. You guys where the "safe" geographic market and a chance to beat AFL to the punch but greedy FFA let Fox dictate terms on expansion markets.

If you want to have a football specific stadium you need Govt support. If you want Govt support it has to be an A-League team plus FA committing NTs of various ages/genders playing some games down there. NRL/Union saying they will play some national Rugby 7s or WNRL would help as well. Make it a 25.000 stadium - expandable if part of  a possible 2032 Brisbane Olympic Football program  

If Hobart doesn't get an A-League team I can't see them stacking up as a NSD for any length of time. 

Think tassies goal is to make the sports precinct involving all pro sports near Derwent.

They may want it, but the market is 500k across the whole state. It’s a market with limited commercial opportunities, and although the feel good factor is there for a team in Tasmania, it’s going to be a huge challenge. 

They want an Afl team more than anything.
basketball Made the right push early and youth basketball in tas is booming. Credit to kestleman, guy has done so much in so little time.
javkjumpers have about 3000 members already and the upgraded stadium will hold about 6000
nbl1 semi pro 2nd tier will be Aus wide by the end of this year. To get every state on board and on the same page so quickly means a lot. The same can’t be said for football.

I moved to Tassie 31 years ago and I was very surprised at how big basketball was then.  It is a bit bigger now but not much because the population has only grown 50,000 in that time.

Oh ffs. Small population spit in half, an economic base totally dependent on mainland tax money. Talk about delusions of grandeur. 

15 years ago i would have agreed with you. Tassie is finally changing for the better, Hobart's is growing, people are moving there.

All it needs is a 10-12k stadium...very achievable

We heard almost the same thing about Central Coast. This does not sound like good deal for the game

Last time I checked Tasmania had the best economy in the last quarter of whole Australia, we do not need an other team in Sydney or Melbourne but regional areas like Wollongong, Canberra or Tasmania with a rectangle stadium would be the logical choice for expansion.

It would great to see this happen.

Maybe the other franchises can pool their resources and fund a new club in Tasmania if local govmnt backs out and Stamoulis is too busy eating touloumbes?

As an expat Tasmanian I suggest that your knowledge of the Tasmanian context needs some filling out.
