+x+x+x+x+xwe carry on like chooks about x player picked and whos in form and not. Its the norm for every NT be it the top flighters to the minnows. Just look at the Poms over the decades for eg.....so many top club players and come NT they've under performed. It is what it is fellas, GA is the out clause for most but for me its all up to the player on the day. Win your battles and inspire your team mates. I agree. It fills up some time between the games. I laugh at myself and others still on the don't pick Grant bandwagon. The bloke has only scored one goal for the socceroos, and that was against Vietnam in that banana peel game in Hanoi. Where would we be without that goal? People always assume the "young and exciting" bloke who has only played 10 minutes for the NT is going to come in and be vastly superior. We all did the same thing with Ange with Kruse, Pim with Holman and Holger with 75% of his squad selections. But Holman was playing at a good level? Always played like a headless chook, but I'm sure that was his role and scored a great goal at the WC. Kruse was banging down the door after his first season in the Bundesliga? Hardly the same as picking some kid in the a-league. The amount of times Kruse made intelligent runs in behind to never receive a pass or open space for another, he was instrumental in Ange's system. High level by today's standards, sure. Not so much in 2008. But he won the league in 08-09, whens the last time we had a socceroo win a trophy? lol people have distorted memories.

Oh ffs can you please read the full bloody post instead of cherry picking one line out of context? Holman was a great player with loads of good qualities. But YOU must have a distorted memory if you think he was a popular selection prior to his goals at the 2010 WC.

Looks like Vietnam have been preparing for a while so they'll park a half-decent bus, unless they feel like playing some football. They've got nothing to lose.
By now, American Samoa must have realised that Australias 22-0 win over Tonga two days earlier was no fluke.

A lot of Asian nations have been playing of late. Arab cup and ASEAN cup. South Korea played Iceland and Moldova while Japan had a Kirin Cup against Usbekistan cancelled.
Covid aside it's quite tricky to get a local squad together with the A League on. There have been windows over the years where it would've been nice to have a camp or friendly but the calendar is so crammed that it'll take a good while to settle.

+xTerrible luck for Vietnam. But bloody great luck for Roos 👍 Gives them the excuse to park the bus. Good tactical move before they're even in the country. An improvement on Arnie's stock standard "we're gonna win"comments.

Weather will suit Vietnam more than Roos too - 34 degrees, humid, possible rain. Ironically Roos probably better off playing this home game in qatar at air conditioning stadium 😆

Behich won't be playing tomorrow.
Apparently due to a blizzard he couldn't fly out. Will instead go straight to Muscat.

Rene saying Goodwin could be an attacking option at LB. Wouldn’t mind that against Vietnam tbh as we’ll have a lot of the ball.

+xLooks like Vietnam have been preparing for a while so they'll park a half-decent bus, unless they feel like playing some football. They've got nothing to lose. No doubt they will put in a strong effort but also given they are without a point after 6 games they may be a small chance of rotating a bit and keeping key players fresh for their home game against China on Tuesday which would appear to be their best chance to register points in this group stage.

+x+x+x[quote]For the life of me I don't know how Grant is getting picked.
Mates with Arnie All previous coaches had their players that we could never understand why they were picked: With Pim Verbeek it was Holman. Holger it was Matty Mckay (at left back). Ange in the latter days kept starting Robbie Kruse. All three players you listed were good and reliable. They were just unfashionable cause they were old.

+xWe all know the viets will sit deep against us next week hence why we must go with a more technical XI against them. Oman in the second game will be a bit more proactive so we can go more with the less technical more direct players. My XI for Vietnam would be Ryan Karacic sainsbury Degenek Behich Jeggo Tilio mooy metcalfe boyle Maclaren Maclaren can only score when he has space/on counter attacks. I'd leave him on the bench. It'll most likely be Duke.

Game day! The 11 will be very interesting. Got the weakest team in the group who aren't exactly weak and always aim to cause trouble. We can't be experimenting too much but risk and reward is there. King being thrown in could see him startled as hell or really thrive on the chance. I think Rogic should be used from the bench if at all for this one. I'd go Boyle and Maclaren up top.
Ryan Karacic Sainsbury Degenek Goodwin Jeggo Metcalfe Mooy Irvine Maclaren Boyle

We will be coming against a packed defence and given we arent known for executing defence splitting passes, we will more than likely be whipping in a lot of crosses in which case having duke and leckie on the pitch gives us our best chance of scoring.

Curious why not many think Rogic should start?! Think we need him starting for sure - having mostly very good club form, and we need someone with top dribbling/passing skills to get through the bus defense.
i predict 3-0 win for Roos 🤞

Also, maybe to keep him tip top for the tougher game vs Oman next week.

I've had the same train of thought Balin but I agree with sfc1987 as well lol...... As for jaymz talking front 2, Duke I agree with, his size and throwing his body on the line is suited to this BUT NO WAY Leckie. Piss him right off, Boyle for my liking touch and pace a good offset with Duke. IF our boys play so slow building up from the back due to their parking of the bus I'm gonna scream my head off........ MCB, I'd sooner have Goodwin play LB than young King, he has a killer ball and skill to take them on out wide.
Love Football

But would have liked to have seen Atkinson selected and playing at right back.

Wow for King. Good luck. Happy to see Karacic.
A bit annoying Irvine and Mooy at 6 who are more of an 8 and deployed that way at club level. They get so stranded as last man. They have more poise with a solid person behind them. Leckie is fortunate and must deliver tonight
