+x+x+x+x+x+xIf you think that Wakeham is our best offering at No.7 then you really didn't see todays game. Not one backline movement was initiated.... not one and that's the halfbacks job to guide the team, and he failed miserably. Burton is doing the general play kicking. Wakeham did what Averillo did which was feed Burton, one attempted long pass touched by the opposition some good tackles. I didn't notice any bad passes or kicks from Wakeham. I did notice a poor pass from Burton an ordinary kick from Burton and Naden not being in position for a pass from Duffty. Some geat bombs from Burton as usual. Apart from Duffty none of our ball runners broke tackles, apart from Wakeham and Duffty none of our players showed any ability to read the game or do anything different. I noticed several fumbles from players off offloads including a very poor drop from JMK. Wakeham squeezed out a good pass under pressure which Jacko unfortunately dropped, good play from both just unlucky, worth forcing the play because it was on. I didn't notice a lot of hard runs or tackle breaks from most of our forwards and backs, except Duffty who was dangerous. It isn't the halfbacks fault evertime the team loses, especially when the half executes their plays and many other players don't. In terms of style Wakeham is doing what Averillo did with a bit more variety, better defence and some smarter kicks. I'll judge the half on play execution when our team creates momentum and numbers, not off a slow play the ball. Slow passing and no momentum. I don't even blame Burton basically the half who has nothing on passes to Burto with nothing on. Go back and look at the side 2002-2004, the fowards laid a platform and the halves had opportunities. Burto needs to look for more early kicks and completions close to the opponents line. I think Burton is a half, just out of practice. Andrew Johns could do nothing playing half in our side, but he might have patience and complete sets. I didn't notice Wakeham forcing any plays and turning the ball over. For the record Flanno last year was some of the worst football I have ever seen from an NRL half. Ok I think he has the raw ingredients but his running game is worse than Wakeham. Give Wakes a few weeks we can't change the half every week. Your reference to 2002-2004 is well made. We'll need to rort the salary cap to put a good team together We could have 3 salary caps and would still pick a dumb set of 13 players to play. It's got nothing to do with salary cap. It's about our mindset, culture whatever you want to call it. An ingrained cancer is what I call it. Start playing 2020 rugby league and all will fix itself. Our structure is identical to the Panthers. Our attack is failing because we lack a good ball playing lock. Yeo is Penriths link man. We lack a fast hooker with good service. Fortunately we get hhat next year. We lack a hard running back rower but we get that next year.
We also lack halves and team work. Good comments. I agree that Jacko is no Yeo. The unique part of our team is the offloads from TPJ and King. A different hooker might change our style. Until we have hard running backrowers with impact we need to make the most of offloads, even though there is a element of risk. I would propably sign a half like Sezer and consider moving Burton to the centres. Also a prop with good authority and a big winger who can make yards, defend and catch the ball. Jacko and Tommo might be too similar and not up to ball playing. I think that we will see more turnover in the squad, some signings including in recent seasons haven't worked out. I relation to a ball playing lock, I'm out of ideas, we shouldn't base our attack around that type of player. Jacko tries hard and does a reasonable job of a role that doesn't really suit him. Your last paragraph is the reason I’m so doubtful of Baz. He is using a game plan that doesn’t suit our players.
Personally we would be better pushing Jacko to the edge. Playing Vaughan, Thommo and Pangai in tight. Leave Waddell on an edge. Play through the middle pushing passes to our backs. Simplify it and just play some footy. We don’t have the talent to play like Penrith

Its all on Trent to get the f{}cking forwards (especially Jackson) out the way once we get into the opposition 20! Jackson looks like he’s taken the mantle of former No.9 Sione Kotoa in absolutely butchering our set plays. He can’t pass a ball if his life depended on it.
Dufty MUST be told to follow TPJ/King & look for the offloads…. At present, JMK gets the 2nd phase pass…. Like Jackson, JMK has absolutely no idea what to do, then just offloads it to another forward.
Our bench rotation is another big bear of mine… so far this year, it’s been used poorly.

Me just after I suggested Okunbor for halfback:) Leave it too the armchair experts. But I hope Burto can improve, mentally I have him down for 2 poor passes or bad options per game. But I also suggested that when he gets the ball nothing is on, still a long pass is a bad option, better to run, pass inside or a short pass outside.

I don't think that we have any set plays on to butcher, shifting off a slow play the ball with zero momentum is pointless.
But a long pass from the dummy half direct to a half at least gives me the halves more time and space.
Jacko is playing to instructions, but the idea is lame.

JMK can start by not fumbling the offload.
Duffty should be standing deeper, and JMK can pass to him.
Create time and space off the offload and practice.
Mostly ensure that there are is no quick kill of the 2nd phase.

+xOk so we both agree that there is a problem at hooker, but you don't think there is a problem at half. Where is the problem then?,what I can say is that I am totally disappointed with Addo-Carrs efforts.... when the ball finally does get to him in a scoring position, instead of going for gold in the corner, he's dogged it and cut back inside to be easily caught. Is he taking the piss or what. Yes, that was disappointing. Certainly took the wrong option as there were 2 cover defenders on the inside, not just one. He had a better chance not slowing down and just running over Pappy. He had more room than he thought and im sure he regrets not pinning the ears back.

+x+x+xWell hd, you are half right.... yes our problems do start at dummy half, but with the wrong halfback that problem also continues through the backline. I have no problems with who we have as 1 and 6 but our choices of 7 and 9 are our Achilles heel. The modern hooker is a pivitol part of the game he must be able to think on his feet and have a vision of what is happening around him. As much as I hate to say it, this is what made Cameron Smith such a great player, he possessed an understanding of the game, which unfortunately JMK doesn't. I feel so sorry for young Matt Burton. Four weeks into a new club AND a new position, he has already had two partners that have let him down severely. This is on Trent Barrett, we know that Flanagan has not shown anything remotely what we were to believe he was capable of, but he is a bona fide halfback and should have been partnering Burton from the beginning of the preseason, with the ultimatum of get it together with a fixd time or you will be shopped around. If we bring Flanagan in now we will be five months behind where we should have been. It seems that there are still some skeletons within the Board, management and/or coaching staff that don't have the clubs best interest at heart. Flanagan can do well in an established team like Storm or Penrith where they already play well, hit the advantage line and have game breakers across the park. He can also do alright in a team like Parra or Sharks or Raiders or even Titans. What he can't do is run the show and dictate the play. He is well behind Wakeham, Avo, BBO in that regard and shouldn't even considered. Best he leaves or rots in reserves. Didn't he get punted by the Roosters. You'd have to call them an established team That's what I mean... He can do ok in those teams but those teams expect more, which he cannot offer. He is toast.

Is he taking the piss or what. You can argue whether or not cutting back was the right decision but, "dogged it", is not in my opinion an appropriate comment. It insinuates an element of cowardice. JAC isn't trusting his speed on half-chances. If he gets thrown into touch fans complain. At the Storm with a big lead, he takes the chance, because the opposition are low on petrol and the game is already won. But he needs to back himself a bit more. He is certainly getting slower and its playing on his mind. I honestly reckon he doesn't want to get into a sprint challenge coz it might show him up. Against Manly he made a break and instead of challenging Saab, he turned the ball inside to Naden who ran away from him and they screwed up a possible 1-2 draw and pass. Given it was wet and slippery, I didn't find it too much fault. But against the storm, it was the wrong option to not just go for it. We really should be backing ourselves in these situations.

We also lack halves and team work. What we lack is the desire to run in numbers, support the ball carrier and hit the ball at speed. Been the same issue for over 20 years. We could get away with it in 90s footy and even early 2000s, but not modern rugby league.

+x+x+x+x+x+x+x+xIf you think that Wakeham is our best offering at No.7 then you really didn't see todays game.
We also lack halves and team work. consider moving Burton to the centres. Jesus Christ man!!!... Do NOT move Burton to the bloody centres! Who suggested that idea?
Actually we are missing Katoa more than any other player..... As much as he could make a mistake, he could create a try. The other we are missing is Adam Elliott. His diagonal runs on the left fringe could have come handy next to Burton.....

We also have a mathematical problem. Can't count numbers in defence or attack.

In 2012 we ran perfect block plays with Barba, Keating and Reynolds. It was great attacking football and almost won us a comp. Problem is it doesn’t work forever. Penrith have a similar attacking structure and we are trying to emulate it. We don’t have the talent to do so.
The problem is obvious. Baz is trying to use a system that doesn’t suit our players. He needs to change the system or get the players that can play in that system.

This team needs variability. It's the only way it can trick the opposition and create opportunities and points. With it, comes errors. Katoa provided that and in a team of misfits. That's why we must keep Wakeham at halfback. He is the only one that has variability in his game.

I cannot believe some of the posts that I am witnessing on this site. Some of these players being named were sh!t, you called them for it, you were glad to see the @rse end of them and now you want to rehash them. How about we just slow down take a deep breath, let the club do what it thinks it has to do and be a supporter. Marki, please don't mention Katoa again it was painful enough when he was with us, and as far as Wakeham goes, he has been with us for a while and he hasn't cut it as our no 7 to date so I am not sure what is going to change. Many people in here and TK don't even want Flanagan in the Dogs colours let alone succeed but there is only one option left fot Barrett and he is going to habe to bite the bullet sooner or later becsusr his career is hinged on it. Why not we are rebuilding anyway.

Why not we are rebuilding anyway. It's not the player himself I necessarily want back. I was alluding to the fact that we need variability from our halfback as we are too 1 dimensional. Our problem however isn't the halfback. It's the way we play. Wakeham is doing just about everything expected of a halfback, but the way our team attacks, it puts no doubt in the defence. This is 2020 rugby league where defences are so much better than in the past. They are trained to slide, trained to go in with numbers, and trained to tackle efficiently. You cant just barge your way to the tryline unless you catch them napping. For some reason, we seem to think 4 hit ups inside the 20m is the way to go. Our gameplan is based on the defence making an uncharacteristic mistake rather than us force them, or outplay them. I honestly watch us and wonder if we do any training at all. Very unprofessional we are.

Get rid of these 2 (and by that I mean don't even allow them to train), and you will see gradual improvement in the way we attack. Off that, we will create opportunities and points. The answer is staring us in the face. It will take guts to drop Jackson but if the powers that be cannot see where the issue lies, we have bigger problems than I thought.

+xWell Marki, I can't disagree with you on this one. Well, we all have our opinions on how to "fix" our teams problems. Just have to hope our esteemed coaching staff and board make thr right decisions to get us back to being a powerhouse and bring joy back to the fans....

JMK will be fine as a 14 and Jacko just needs a different role in attack, just hitting the ball up or running decoys, Both are good defenders and Thommo is about the only other good defender in the team, Wardell generally adequate and it is downhill from there. Mostly we want more good attackers than defenders, but someone has to make the tackles. I saw some Twitter posts from Gus. 1. Faith in Barrett - good attention to detail. 2. Flanno will not be rushed back imto NRL - priority is what is best for the player. This might just be spin or the official line from Gus, but I don't expect major team changes. Major changes are likely to make things worse, not better. I think we will see 1-2 changes each week until we have the combination. I also think that Baz was talking about 1. The pass and kick from Burton. 2. The kick from BBO. My conclusion the player most likely to be dropped is BBO and that is the right call. Defence up the middle fell appart with BBO playing hooker, not all his fault, but defence in the middle of the park isn't a luxury that teams can do without. Dropping Jacko would ensure 50 points are scored against us.

I still think scoring points forces the opposition to play alittle tighter and less expansive, which cam keep you in the game longer. If you give teams like Storm, Penrith the confidence to throw the ball around once they are 20points up, they can easily turn it into 50. Not scoring a try or 2 when we were on top in the first 20odd minutes proved really costly.

+x+x+x+x+xI cannot believe some of the posts that I am witnessing on this site. Not scoring a try or 2 when we were on top in the first 20odd minutes proved really costly. The game plan was try to out score Melbourne and offloads were worth trying. We doubled down in the 2nd half with nothing to lose. But they got 2 long range tries off poor execution/decision making by us. We conceded 3 or more soft tries with poor defence, good defence from the Storm and lead to some of our errors. JAC, Naden, Averillo, Duffty, and TPJ are not in the side for their defensive abilities. We have enough attacking players, that counts for nothing when a team can't execute or defend. Storm was the first time we have played against, speed, execution and talent. We are not scoring 6 tries a game, so we need to keep the opposition to no more than 3-4 tries. Scoring 20 is impossible when the opposition scores 50. Yes scoring helps limit their scoring, but them scoring limits our scoring. We need to improve all parts of our game. The side is mostly close to the best we can pick, offloads are the right idea. Some of the unforced errors need to be worked on and execution needs to improve.

I do agree that we should have scored early.
If we couldn't do that we needed to work them over by getting lots of repeat sets.
I am not exactly sure why we didn't score, except we kept going wide, the Storm expected it an numbered up.
I think a grubber kick early in the set may score a try, get a repeat set and slow their line speed.
Or angled runners, inside balls, anything different.
That is why I think Wakeham can make it as a half. He is a bit like Shifty Sherwin, not afraid to try a outrageous higher risk play.

Well Flanno is getting a run with Wakeham in 14.
Maybe, not a bad decision, I hope Flanno and Burton don't try to throw long passes off slow shifts.
If the coaches think Flanno is ready I am happy to run with that, but I wonder about the service from dummy-half.
Also we can't change our half every week.
I hope Flanno is confident and that he backs himself.
This will answer a few questions,.
