But Ernie isn't an oily vermon political type, he will end up 'disrupting' quite alot. This means his ajitating may well stifle ongoing slow progress, not get any favours. Scratch my back I'll scratch your scabs.

This is not an appointment that will please many but I think he will do well in this role.

Hope for the sake of the game that it works. We need some kind of shake up to get things moving.

Good luck Ernie.

Agree.

At best he could be useful as an adjunct to a foreign  based coach from one of the proactive European powerhouses, bringing newer ideas to Australian football.

Merrick's appointment is a backward step.

The one thing I like that Ernie has alluded to, and far too little has been made of it in this country, whilst a lot more has been overseas, is Australia qualifying for WCs five times in succession.

I know as an energetic 65 year old, that my energy levels are way lower than most people 20 years younger. Merrick at age 69, is far too old for the role.

yes it is an underwhelming appointment........
What the hell is the FA/JJ thinking.
Be it this appointment of in any other type of business why would you assign a late 60's person with all due respect.

What FA advertised for was a Chief Football Officer not a Technical Director.  Johnson said when they advertised the role that it wasn't a replacement for a Technical Director but after reviewing where we are and where we need to go the person in this CFO role would decide if both roles were needed in the future.  I expect they will both be needed.

The last thing we need in this senior role is someone who doesn't understand the politics of football in Australia.  Ernie is a great choice because he has worked in both old football and new football and is respected in both realms.  The major part of the role at the moment is to get the structural change that is going too slowly happening at a faster pace.  Those structural changes are:-   Get the NSD issues sorted and get it started.  Get the domestic transfer system tuned up and get it happening across all of football.  Get more international experience happening again for the national age teams.  While he keeps stirring the pot on those three he can start working on reviewing where we are now in the wide area he has been given to manage and what staff will be needed.

The reaction on here is misguided by people not following the story.

We need someone untainted to do the talking between stakeholders and I actually have a good feeling about his appointment

Interesting .

Following the story - we can only read what has been presented by the FA and our pov.
Ofcourse we need someone from within thats a given being we's unique - below from JJ
"Ernie will work closely with our already very experienced technical and coaching teams, and we are excited about the contributions he will make to Football Australia and the game more broadly," FA chief executive James Johnson said.
In bold, are not any of these assuming "younger" TD's etc not suited for this job for eg ?
I think more so they don't have the media profile EM has for one for I'm sure these guys have a good idea what the develop issues/hurdles are and where more coaching support need to be applied.
Don't need a EM to get more International experience for our Jnr Roo squads - that should be a given year in year out in any case.
Not rocket science getting the NSD up and running, its one annoucement after another of small small steps, whoooppe deee EM is a new CFO !
JJ wake the F up, steamroll the NSD to get up and running, then the CFO will manage the steps in the background re development, coaching, YLeagues etcetc as EM quotes :

"My challenge as chief football officer is to assist in raising participation numbers and improve elite youth development and high-performance programs for both boys and girls," Merrick, who begins work next Monday, said.

"To increase the production of world class Australian players we need to review our football curriculum and development programs to benchmark ourselves against top-ranking nations.

The politics Gyfox mentions, exactely, WTFU JJ the NSD is the most needed Improvement to our game period !

Merrick's role would be to "massage" all of the stakeholders through to the final agreement.  FA has engaged consultants to do the financial modelling and has legal people on its staff to give advice or to delegate the legal work to.

Johnson led the design of the DTS.  Merrick's role would be to see it put in place across the whole of the elite football system including pulling the recalcitrant APL and PFA into being part of a unified football system.

One of the critical skills of any manager is to know when to seek advice and with a job as broad as the CFO's that will happen often.

FWIW I agree with Gyfox... Decent appointment by FA and good to see they are putting the structural and procedural "cogs" into place to achieve what we all know we need...

LFC dont think of this as a Technical direction role matey, I get your points about EMs shortcomings but Gyfox is right, he is the "circuit breaker" that may be able to bring all parties together to move forward. A good middle manager type..... After the Gallops and the Hills and the Lowys.... Ernie Merrick is friggin breath of fresh air. (he at least understands the offside rule and realizes the ball we play with is round)

I also read that he will review the curriculum as well, is he capable of doing that or will they be finding a TD to do that with him?

If it’s strategic just to get things over the line like the NSD etc that’s fine but if he’s going to review the curriculum and elite pathways and alike I think this requires the work of more than one person for it in my opinion.

When you read the position description the position as part of the executive team is responsible for a lot and contributes in other areas a lot as well.  I would expect that the CFO will have a number of specialist staff attached to his unit.

It makes sense to have specialist staff on what issue that needs to be addressed.

A huge job and good luck to him.
