+xI've seen a council update on the training facility. Regardless of how 'compromised' it is from the what was 'shovel ready' and promised. Western United HAVE to play games there next season as AAMI Park matches are a poor look and would see unsustainable losses. At least it would be a home base to build a core following. If they need temporary stands to get the seating capacity up and build up some hills behind the goals it's better than the current arrangement. https://youtu.be/e0YCDQM0QUo
REGIONAL FOOTBALL FACILITY UPDATE: Construction is progressing at a cracking pace! With the level one floor structure now in place and the pavilion taking shape, work is progressing onto the grandstand of the facility. Works continue with the establishment of the football pitches and the surrounding road and utility supplies. Located within the Wyndham Stadium Precinct at 1160 Sayers Road, the Regional Football Facility will be the training base for Western United Football Club and football across the West. Once complete, the Regional Football Facility will feature state-of-the-art training amenities, including three football pitches and capacity for 5000 spectators at the main pitch.

If they're considering playing here, then it is ludicrous they didn't consider playing at Somers st these past few years. This training base will be lucky to have 2000 seats. This looks like the Ballarat football venue. Morsehead?

Even 5k will do WU for the moment.

No way council will increase budget to fund seating to expand capacity. Careful of the rhetoric. Seating and capacity are 2 very different things. My point still stands. They could've used Somers st stadium if this is what they will move to next year.

+xHope the training stadium is ready for next season. As a Melbourne-based A-League fan, it sucks having no derbies outside of AAMI Park. Derbies will most like still be at AAMI Park. The training ground will just be used for non-Victorian opposition. It's still undetermined whether they will continue bothering to hsot games in Geelong, Ballarat, Tasmania and what have you.

A council won't expand it to a 5000 seated venue. That is my point. Epping is a 5000 capacity venue. Only 1000 seats. No one thinks that'll be a great A-league venue.

We'll see what happens with the council built venue. No chance there'll be 5000 seats. WU are probably paying 100k to play at AAMI. Probably paid more at kardinia park. Putting that money towards Somers st improvements and playing there for a few years would've benefitted everyone. They have to pay someone. Wouldn't it have been better to put it towards a grassroots venue in the west?

+xWhy don’t western play at city vista where the women’s team are playing? This would only work when they play City because the ground would cope with a couple people and a few stray dogs You're not going fit 15k if they play Victory

With temporary seating the whole way around they could probably get to about 5k, similar to what they achieved with Macedonia Park and Upper Hutt in Wellington. That will do fine as an A league venue until they (if) start building the real stadium.

The training base will be a weird one as it is surrounded by…. Nothing. It will likely be very windy and exposed to the elements.
Temporary seating without any cover will be very interesting, but given that there has been no mention of the actual stadium going ahead, I tend to think it’s getting more and more likely that they will have to deal with this solution for a long time.

It will be a very long wait for the stadium, but the training facility won't be surrounded by nothing for long. Houses are shooting up in Tarneit quicker than anywhere. It was be surrounded by shops and houses inside 2 years. In terms of the Somers Street discussion, my understanding is that WU had offered Melbourne Knights 250k per season and other revenues per game, however this wasn't enough for the Knights, who didn't want them to use Somers Street. Understandable but frustrating for the general supporter. What should have happened is that they should have used Melbourne Showgrounds and built temporary seating around the sidelines that don't have permanent seats. That would have allowed a permanent home to be created, and not have to deal with the politics of using another teams venue. Perth Glory have made the most of a horrible situation this season, and its a shame that WU couldnt have done this from the start.

I reckon they may still end up getting gov funding at some point, it just won't be anytime soon.

If funds have been promised by lib government but withheld, there may not be a 15k capacity Stadium at all. The training grounds at best. Has construction of the training grounds commenced again in January? Who knows.

It was an election promise, however the Libs lost the election in November, so unlikely for any gov funding within the next 4 years. Labor may decide to approve the funding but I doubt it. It is possible for the Libs to propose the funding in parliament and it get bipartisan support, but I also doubt that will happen. It was just an attempt by the Libs to capture the westy vote.

It’s good to see our game get some investment, and benefiting from the North East Link works.
As for WU, the training base will need a fair amount of work to make it a viable venue. Understand that it won’t be out on its own for long, but for the first couple of years, it will be either undeveloped or becoming a construction zone in the area.
I really just don’t see this working out well, however I still hold limited hope they will get things in order. I am still amazed they aren’t focusing more of developing younger players to bring some return on investment, as I can’t see how they aren’t losing a significant amount at present with minimal fans and no home.

Manningham Council will manage usage of the new facilities by local clubs and the broader community.
Didn't Bulleen have their own ground managed by their social arm, the Veneto club?
Looks like they've gone backwards.

Don't know what has happened with WU's media officer, but there has been a paucity of media publicity for the WU double header in Hobart today.
I was going to ring her to ask if she has provided info and media outlets have ignored it. We have had articles in the local Murdoch tabloid in the last three days. Yesterday and the day before was about ALW - with Aimee Medwin returning to her home of Hobart to play for WU.
However, a football journo mate of mine provided info to the tabloid weeks ago and we should have had a lot more publicity over the last few weeks.
Today we've finally had 2 articles on ALM.
WU was conducing coaching sessions with local players and coaches in the last few days - which is good to see.

If funds have been promised by lib government but withheld, there may not be a 15k capacity Stadium at all. The training grounds at best. Has construction of the training grounds commenced again in January? Who knows. Do you have a salient point? I'm struggling to figure out what relevance this has to a post where i link a construction video. I think you're trying to say something broadly negative. Cool. World needs more of you... My salient point is that it is old footage. They won't have the training ground ready for start of 2023-24 season. They haven't started construction on it again this year, yet. Lib gov lost an election and forget funding for the main stadium. All in all, things look pretty shit.

+x+x+x+xSo their stadium sorry training facility is supposed to be completed by may. Is there any update on how it's going? May ? That's quicker than I expected. I'd like to see some progress pictures or articles if any exist. Like the 2nd Division actually happening I'll believe it when I see it. Wyndham City has video updates on its youtube video. Last update I saw was October but it looked significantly progressed at that point. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e0YCDQM0QUo&ab_channel=WyndhamCity That's been around for a long while. WU have put alot of energy into Tasmanua, is that a sign of an eventual shift further south? If funds have been promised by lib government but withheld, there may not be a 15k capacity Stadium at all. The training grounds at best. Has construction of the training grounds commenced again in January? Who knows. Not the dumbest idea in the world. Just call them Southern United, that'll do.

Had no idea they were playing at North Hobart Oval until I saw the AL posted this on facebook.
Anyway I'm intrigued on how it sets up as a venue. From my understanding, it's one of the more narrower ovals so more suitable to host football than say Docklands or the ballarat venue WU use for example. It also has an elevated terrace on the wing which would be cool to see on display hosting football.
When I was 'all in' with emotional investment for the A-League 10-15 years ago I was hoping Tasmania United got accepted and converted North Hobart Oval into a dedicated football facility. Obviously a personal pipedream at the time.
Ironically since then it seems like the NBL have actually made it a reality and the Jackjumpers have been very succesful with a parochial fanbase with an upgraded venue and high attendances.
