Had a great chance to start afresh but picked the same old problems and left out some of the solutions - no Nisbet in particular makes me seethe.

With China weakened by injury I suspect we'll get a crack-papering win tonight but get beaten in Japan. That will be enough to keep Popa in a job but the team he's picked is deeply depressing.

I think Popa deserves this thread so we can say No to Popa Out.

I agree that he chose a lesser squad and not the players I would have chosen in the positions I would have chosen. That's football and oddly enough I am not getting paid to be a national team manager despite my obvious footbaw intelligence.

My biggest beef with Arnie was the style of play and choices he made to enforce that style.

Popa played much more open attacking football and put players in that he thought would do that. I am happy for him to play 6 defensive minded players and 4 attacking players - but only as long as some of the defenders can bridge the gap between the two groups.

A reasonable level of forward intent and watchable football is all I want, and it was a good start by Popa - especially in the second half when he made changes that supported the type of play I want to see.

give us a break he won his first game with only days to prepare.... the real test will not to get flogged against Japan...

I don't think it was an impressive display at all against a weakened team that are now bottom of the group. Why pick Gauci over Ryan? Neither are playing so if you drop Ryan it should have been Izzo. The display was much better with McGree on in the second half.

Avoid a flogging against Japan (or steal a point) and beat Saudi Arabia while not picking Deng and ensuring McGree starts and I may warm up to Popa. Still a long way to go and his injury replacements seem to indicate that he wants to look back not forwards but it was only one game.
