Cats sleep up to 16 hours a day, how much more excitement do they need

Our cat is definitely always excited, whether it's with us or the whole bunch of toys & crap we have around the house.

Her personality has just improved miles & miles since she's been let outside though. She's become so intrigued in so many things, and if anything has even more fun and loves us more nowadays.

Yep. I keep my cat inside at night and she spends most days of the week inside. My cat is only outside each day between when I get home from work and when it gets dark.

I don't think I could be more responsible without keeping her inside all day every day which is cruel.

It's also odd because the other neighbours love my cat because she's friendly to their children. I guess cats can sense arseholes

ask any vet or cat sanctuary and they will advise that cats should be kept indoors.
and that it is only a problem if people do not interact or have activities for them to do.

We have 3 cat trees throughout the house and over a hundred toys for all of our cats and foster cats that we look after.

Please people keep your cats indoors. cats have been reported to kill up to 18 million animals a night.

I have heard the same to be honest. "Our" cats don't get let out. Or at least of they do it's supervised and they barely go bast the first plant or two from the door. Life expectancy of the cat itself too basically doubles by keeping it inside.

perthjay - my vet recommended we let our cat outside.

For the first 3 years of its life it was strictly indoors - we only took it outside under heavy supervision and/or it got out and we'd immediately bring it back in.

During that time it was by no means fat or lazy - it just looked like a standard cat. But every time we'd take it to the vets for yearly needles, or whatever, the vet would always say the cat was on the heavier side of normal and when we told him we always keep it indoors, he'd strongly advise letting it out to run, jump, explore & exercise more.

When babyv4 was in utero we figured it was as good a time as any to try it out, so we just let the cat out during the days and expected the worst things to happen (neighbours dogs to attack it, as they are let out usually, or bitten by spiders/worse under the house, etc). But it's been 2 years now and the cat loves life. Knocks on the back door every evening before dark to be let back in. There's only been one night we couldn't find it and it stayed the night out - but it's whole life we've had a collar with bell on it so we didn't feel too bad, and noticed no dead animals around the next day.

Recently took her to the vets for yearly needles and the vet was just buzzing that we finally let her out, and said physically she was perfect weight and healthier than ever (not that she was ever unhealthy).

So yeah, not all vets etc will recommend strictly indoors. At night, sure, but during the day I think the recommendation is to let them exercise a bit.

Something that mrsv4 and I are still confused about though is the cat will knock on the back door to bet let back in to go to the toilet. For some reason, years on now, she still apparently hasn't figured out she can use the entire outside world as a toilet

I would strongly advise you get a second cat for interaction. A few cat trees. If your cat wasn't overweight then there would be no need to let your cat out of the house. That is a problem with the cat not being stimulated through the day.

We have 3 permanent cats that run and fight all day and climb cat trees. and with every new foster kitten or cat within 2 weeks they are running around playing and fighting and climbing.

I would also suggest you invest in one of the toys I posted earlier in order to get your cat more active. We have problems keeping weight on our cats even though we feed them advanced and Hill Science diet.

So it is more likely that all vets will advise cats to be kept indoors, unless there is a problem with the cat.

As for the toilet issuer, cats are a creature of habit. They do what is known to them. we have auto cleaning litter trays that all the cats struggled with, then when they were comfortable with them they will not go back to using a standard litter tray.

But each to there own, the 6 vets we have used. Cat haven in Perth and perth Zoo all advise keeping cats indoors.
Add to that Dr Chris Brown, Dr Harry Cooper & many many councils.

The onus lies with the owner to interact and make the indoor zone attractive to the cat.

Well of course but bloody cats are killing a hell of a lot of our tiny little marsupials. They've been virtually wiped out in parts of Australia. And they do it for fun.

There is some work where they're building fenced enclosures or reintroducing them onto small islands but that's not viable in the long term.

There's a simple solution for that. Declaw your cats. You're not killing an animal but you're also protecting other animals as well!

So wrong but it does add an element of perplexing hypocritical complexity to your character at least

There's no hypocrisy here, champ. I value all life but unfortunately, our native wildlife are sitting ducks to cats. I'd rather see declawed cats than the extinction of our unique wildlife.

Declawing cats is an ethical and humane way to protect other animals from cats. If anything, declawing cats is a good way to curb their aggressive tendencies.

When we started fostering cats we were introduced to these:
http://www.vetnpetdirect.com.au/go_cat_da-bird_with_pull_apart_rod#.V33oebh97IU

Get one, nearly every foster cat and ours have been obsessed with playing with them.

When we first got our cats, we had scratching posts and all sorts of shit for them to climb over and play with.

Their favourite toy was and currently is a little ball of tin foil.

It's like the more expensive the toy is, the more they can't be fucked playing with it.

Cats need interaction. your cat might not like human interaction as such but with the toy I linked there is plenty of interaction and it is with the feathers. Or even string on the end of a stick can get them excited. We used to use laser pointers, but we were informed that sometimes it could work up cats too much.

Apparently that was not the right comment to make...... Stupid bitch.

WGMG: Double Standards. I hate when people like her say things like that.

I guess cats can sense arseholes

you are wrong here.
ask any vet or cat sanctuary and they will advise that cats should be kept indoors.
and that it is only a problem if people do not interact or have activities for them to do.

Sounds a bit like you.

Now you're not even making sense.

Just pointing out that you spend half your time on here whinging and crying, and if you didn't have the intellectual ability to speak, you'd probably be meowing too.
