I would like to think that was the case Diegos son but unfortunately if Rory Fallons opinion means anything in this new article here on fourfourtwo it doesn't look good.
http://au.fourfourtwo.com/news/129298,kiwis-better-than-1982-wc-side.aspx

Fallon backed up Herbert's comments that the strongest players would be picked.
"You've got to pick the best man for the job. That's junior stuff where everyone gets a go," he said. "It's business time. It's a ruthless game and you've got to play your best team."
The All Whites also play pre-World Cup fixtures against Serbia, Slovenia and Chile, but Fallon cited the Aussies as the toughest prospect.
"Australia is going to be the toughest because they are our rivals," he said. "It's always a magical game against Australia. It'd be brilliant if we can do well against them."
It's been five years since the Socceroos beat the All Whites 1-0 in London and Fallon was predicting a physical encounter where the result was important.
"I wouldn't be surprised if there are a few injuries because I'm not going to hold back against them, he warned.
"We're not messing around and I'm going to give everything. They probably think we are the lesser country, so they won't want to lose."

We certainly dont want this attitude taken into this game for the exact reasons pointed out by auskiwi and diegos son. I do think this is a good hit out for both sides before world cup however as for aus they get to try a few things (russia or someone of that nature would punish aus if they did that) and NZ get to try our first 11 to see how they perform including the new CB combination Reid/Nelson. With the team aus will field and NZ's best Im predicting it to be a fairly even match and well worth the watch. Just hope no injuries ruin it for anyone but Fallons comments didnt help things.

What do you think about the FourFourTwo article Herbert to Pick Strong Line-Up?
KIWI coach Ricki Herbert has indicated New Zealand will field their strongest possible line-up for the World Cup warm-up against Australia.

Have your say.

Playing our old rivals NZ is NEVER easy, but indeed, this time, your line up with all those classy new players (Reid, Tommy Smith, McGlinchey, Fallon, Chris Wood...) - it could really surprise some of the players, aswell as the fans!

Infact in Reid and Smith you guys suddenly have potentially a classy new centre back pairing! And your taller forwards like Killen, Fallon and Wood should not make it easy for our own centre backs either, or our wider defensive set up come set pieces.

Thinking about it - It's been suggested how much of a threat Serbia may be at set pieces with the likes of Zigic (6'5 ft striker) and co, so our playing you guys may be great preparation for us, in this regard? Smeltz (6'1 ft), Killen (6ft), Fallon (6'2 ft) and Wood (6'3 ft) are certainly some tall timber in their own right!

The Soccerwhos should be grateful.
Anyway the kiwis get to play better sides soon in Serbia and Solvenia.
They will be ready for their first cup game against Slovakia.
That will be tough for them, but they have half a chance to take.
Who's aussie playing after this game?

He's actually got a point, NZ have more to lose in the fact that their 23 man has been chosen, and they more than anyone won't risk injury in this game.

Love to see what the other OFC nations have to say about that, have you asked them for permission to leave Oceania yet?

Im always excited when the socceroos play, but i too am concerned about injuries. NZ constantly hyping up this games importance shows what attitude they'll be taking into this.

Herbert to go all out against Roos
May 19, 2010

New Zealand coach Ricki Herbert has indicated he will field his strongest possible line-up in their World Cup warm-up match against Australia.

Ricki Herbert (L) and Ryan Nelsen
GettyImagesRicki Herbert will unleash Ryan Nelsen and his other big guns

The trans-Tasman rivals square off in Melbourne on May 24 before New Zealand head to Europe for further matches against Serbia, Slovenia and Chile. Herbert's side kick off their World Cup campaign against Slovakia in Rustenburg on June 15 followed by games against Italy and Paraguay.

The All Whites' first hit-out after qualifying for the South Africa tournament came against Mexico in March, a 2-0 loss in Los Angeles, but they were missing key personnel in goalkeeper Mark Paston, defender Ryan Nelsen, who were both injured, and fellow defender Ivan Vicelich (suspended). The trio will all be available for next week's encounter.

Also added to the mix now are a couple of new recruits in defender Winston Reid and midfielder Aaron Clapham. Herbert has only seen DVD footage of Reid, who is based in Denmark and plays for FC Midtjylland.

The 21-year-old played for the Danish Under-20s side and just recently pledged his allegiance to his country of birth following a FIFA eligibility rule change. The New Zealand coach however, hinted the uncapped defender could get a start at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Monday night.

"I think we'll pretty much go to the starting XI, the best XI, and that might include Winston,'' Herbert said. "We might take that decision - I wouldn't say it's a punt because he's playing at a fantastically high level. We will need to see those ones (Reid and Clapham) at some stage so who knows, (Reid) might just get thrown right into the lion's den.''

New Zealand and Australia last met five years ago in London when the Socceroos won 1-0. Since then Australia's star has continued to rise and they are currently ranked 20th in the world. New Zealand sit in 78th spot but are keen to see the fixture become a regular one on the calendar given the intense sporting rivalry between the two countries.

"Every other sporting code does it, so why can't we?'' asked Herbert, who was part of the 1982 All Whites, the last New Zealand team to feature at a World Cup. "We're going across there as a World Cup team now so I think we're on the same playing level.''

Vice-captain Tim Brown sees the MCG clash as a chance for New Zealand to make a statement before they embark on a rare journey to football's showpiece tournament.

"It's the first big challenge for us and we want to set the tone for the whole trip,'' the workhorse midfielder declared. "Whenever you play Australia it doesn't really matter what's going on it's a big rivalry in New Zealand sport and we haven't had that chance in a number of years. It's going to be a big crowd and a big game and we're certainly going out there to win.''

I wonder, how many tickets have been sold for this match? Honestly, I'm not going...mainly because I don't care about the game. There is history between the two countries in other codes, but I could care less.

I don't mean to offend our neighbours, but I was hoping for tougher opposition. I'll be watching this game at home.

As long as Smelz/Killen/Wood can exploit the slow moving rock at the back in Moore theres a chance. But that being said Schwarzer will save Australia as many times as it takes anyway. Just hopefully one gets through.

We shouldn't field our starters as we need to have a look at fringe players before selecting our final 23, NZ has already done this so it makes sense to field there best 11 so they can start working towards there first group game.

That's the difference between Verbeek and Herbert. Throughout Herbert's playing career as an All White he would have played in numerous games against Australia, lots in crucial WC qualifiers where both teams would have been going guns blazing. He probably still has this emotional attachment to these games where Verbeek doesn't. If there was an Australian coach of Herberts (Kossie/GA  ) vintage leading Australia I am sure there would be a lot more feeling in this game on the Australian side.

Actually Mavross, I think you've probably got it the wrong way around as far as media coverage goes. I think large sections of the Australian media would be more than happy to run screaming headlines such as 'Socceroos in crisis' were we to go down to New Zealand.

If we win, it'll just be taken as given, I suspect.

Sounds like a good reason the countries you wanted to play wouldn't come to Aus to play. Australia have the rep as being a bit physical in this sport and Russia for example may share the same view as you why go and take Russias Superior team to Australia to have a bunch rough aussies hack them to the ground to try and prove to the world they are better than they are?

Great idea - let's watch a superior Aussie team with nothing to prove get kicked around and injured by a bunch hepped up Kiwis with chips on their shoulders.

This game has been a farce from the beginning, and the ticket sales (despite the desperate measures thrown forward by the FFA) have been an indication of what the Australian public think of the game and opposition.
