Red Devils' Newby keen to get going

BY TIM O’CONNOR

THE Ballarat Red Devils have made some excellent additions to the playing squad during the summer months, but all they lacked was a goalkeeper.
Darryl Newby is just the man.

Newby, who was a teammate of last year’s top signing Leigh Sissons at Leeds University, has been training with the Reds for the past four weeks.

“I have known Leigh for a long time and he has told me great things about the club and the support that the players get every week from fans and I am very excited to be here,” Newby said.

“I first started my time away from England by going to the World Cup in South Africa and then came across to Australia with a few mates.”

With last season’s number one Aaron Romein leaving for Victorian Premier League club the Melbourne Knights, and the Reds just missing out on former Australian under-23 and Leeds United and Wolverhampton shot-stopper Danny Milosevic, Newby will be the man between the posts in 2011.

“We have had a few pre-season matches now and I think we have done well. The team looks strong and we have a good dozen or so excellent players, so all is looking well at the moment,” he said.

“I have been really impressed with Brian (Shelley) and Adam (Newbold) as well as the young lads in the King boys, Charlie and David, along with Daniel Tinker and Kyran Taylor.”

Newby is excited to make his debut for the Reds in today’s Mirabella Cup clash against Bell Park.

“Pre-season matches are one thing and something that needs to be done, but I am happy to get my first chance in the real stuff and I can’t wait,” he said.
