Granville District Soccer Football Association set goal for cheaper player fees

SOCCER players should not raise their hopes of paying cheaper fees in future, although the Granville District Soccer Football Association is trying to make it happen.
Football NSW recently announced it would reduce player registration fees. The state body said the reduction for six- to nine-year-olds - and its decision not to increase fees on other ages - would keep the sport affordable for all.
However, Granville’s immediate past president Howard Groom said those reduced charges formed only a marginal part of a club’s registration fee.
“It’s only four dollars here, seven dollars there,” he said.
“The Football NSW component is not a large component. There are other costs the association incurs, such as running a NSW Premier League team.
“And in the absence of sponsorship, that means finding funding from the grassroots.”
In better news for soccer players and parents however, Groom said the association was working to find other ways of funding its Premier League team, Parramatta FC.
“The association is going to work hard on attracting sponsorship for the Premier League club and that can reduce costs for (other) clubs,” he said.
Some associations impose a $15 levy on player registrations in order to fund their state league clubs, but Granville has decided against that move.
Tertiary students, however, will see cheaper fees in 2012. Football NSW has reintroduced discounts for players who study.
