At the end of this month, it will be election day in Zimbabwe, which means it’s currently high season for political smearing, intimidation and vote-rigging. Interestingly, Robert Mugabe and his ZANU-PF party have found a big fat fly in their ointment – an anonymous leaker going by the pseudonym Baba Jukwa.
The mole, apparently operating deep inside the party, has an ear and an eye on plenty of sensitive and damaging information, which is then published on their Facebook page. Have a gander at what would be truly shocking information if it wasn’t coming from the party that came up with Operation Murambatsvina (Drive Out Rubbish) and the Marange Diamond Fields torture camp.
Corruption, police brutality and assassination plots dominate the feed of information, with some worryingly prescient posts including the prediction of outspoken critic Edward Chindori-Chininga’s assassination. With a current count of 244,424 Facebook likes, and an extremely active comments section under each and every post, Baba Jukwa is making waves in Zimbabwe, evading the authorities and seemingly posting from different locations at consecutive times – suggesting that Baba Jukwa may be using a number of inside sources of information.
What a guy: Mugabe tells gay couples to have a baby or face jail
The author’s posts suggest that he has access to some very sensitive information, and he accuses many senior police and government officials of serious crimes along with posting their telephone numbers, whilst advocating his readers to call them up to demand answers for their crimes.
Mugabe
Unsurprisingly, Mugabe has decided that “Zimbabwe’s own Julian Assange” must be dealt with, and has reportedly offered a $300,000 reward for his identity. Given that when Mugabe decides he has had enough of a political opponent he has on occasion been accused of swatting them away like a fly (sending them crashing into a tree, or a jail cell, or a torture camp), Baba Jukwa, whoever he/they may be, must certainly be wary.
The posts and their popularity perhaps indicate that Zimbabweans are moving to harness the power of anonymous social media and online blogging in the fight against their repressive government, following the sensational Arab Springs, and so-called Twitter-Revolutions seen across parts of the Middle East and Western Asia in recent years. Baba Jukwa urged his countrymen to take up the social media weapon in this post 19 hours ago:
“POLICE OFFICERS HAVE BEEN MOVED TO BRAESIDE POLICE STATION. Spread the word. Share this post on Facebook. Tweet it. Send through Whatsapp. Call everyone you know. Do not just like this post. Do one of the above or all. THREE OFFICERS FROM HARARE CENTRAL POLICE ARE IN DANGER OF BEING KILLED TONIGHT BY THE EVIL PEOPLE IN MY PARTY!!
Police assistant inspector’s full name is Victor Jaja not Jaji vanaveZimbabwe. Assistant police inspector Victor Jaja has been moved to Bareside Police Station. We are still trying to get the phone numbers of the evil people holding these three innocent men. Zimbabwe tell Chihuri to let Police Victor Jaja go NOW.
These are good men who are all married and have young children. They have not committed any crime Zimbabwe. All they wanted to see was the nominal roll, which is not a crime in Zimbabwe. Continue to tweet, share the post and send Whatsapp messages. Tell your leaders to act NOW. The lives of these good family men are in danger!! They need you Zimbabwe NOW! Asijiki!!! Ndatenda, Baba Jukwa.”
Certainly one to watch.
