FFA slap bans on five people linked to a match fixing scandal in a suburban Melbourne league

PETER ROLFE HERALD SUN OCTOBER 26, 2013 12:00AM

SOCCER'S national governing body has slapped bans on five people linked to a match fixing scandal in a suburban Melbourne league.

Football Federation Australia yesterday announced that five people facing criminal charges related to bets made on Victorian Premier League matches would be suspended from all soccer activities.

Four Southern Stars players and coach Zaya Younan have been charged by police over international match-fixing allegations following a series of raids in Melbourne last month.

The FFA yesterday ruled that the players and coach had brought the game of football into disrepute by being charged and would be banned from the sport in Australia immediately.

The FFA has also written to the game’s international body FIFA asking that the bans be applied worldwide.

The bans will continue until 2015 or until the cases are decided.
