The exodus at Melbourne Heart has yet to start in earnest as new owner Manchester City audits the club's roster.

But one to go is striker Golgol Mebrahtu, the Sudanese-born forward who joined the club following the collapse of Gold Coast United in 2012.

Western Sydney is set to be the 23-year-old's destination. He has struggled for regular game time with Heart and his goalscoring record is poor.

He has not figured under John van 't Schip and is unlikely to as Heart gives younger players a go.

I personally think he will become a good player, especially if he ends up in a good football development environment. He scored 4 good goals (including some screamers) for us last season, despite the fact he only had 4 starts (and some subs, but he only played the equivalent of 6 90 matches all up) and he only had 15 shots (7 on target). He's floundered this season because all of our players have (esp. under JA), and a young 23 year old like him was never going to drag the team forward while the whole team was poor and losing.

At the same time I'm ok with Heart losing him, because ATM he is so much more potential than output, and it will take him some time to get better and regularly play well.

23 is not young in football. On the whole, if you haven't established yourself as a starter at 23, you've missed the boat for ever being 'good', unless you drop down to lower level.

If he's not good enough to get into a bad side at Heart, what chance of getting into a good one at WSW?

Popa is a clever bloke - but can't see the logic in this move. Perhaps trying to improve diversity in the squad to keep the likes of paulc happy?


Agree that 23 is generally not young in football, but Golgol is a pretty unique case as he hasn't played that much professional or even semi-professional football and his football career has been disjointed due to things like injuries. Also, 23 can be considered young in Australia, as our national league isn't as competitive as other leagues (look at Daniel McBreen, for instance, who only became professional at 23).

I also think it's a bit much to say that Golgol can't ever be a good footballer, at least in Australia, because he isn't an established starter, especially at Heart (whose judgement and decisions this season have been a complete mess).

I don't expect him to quickly become a starter week in week out at WSW, if only because seemingly no players are certain starters every week at WSW. But I do expect Golgol to improve noticeably at WSW, and I reckon he could well go on to be a good footballer by Australian standards.
