FNSW Institute players dominate AIS Squad

Football NSW are pleased to announce that 11 FNSW Institute players have been offered and accepted scholarship positions at the Australia Institute of Sport (AIS).

This is the largest intake of players from a Member Federation in the 33 year history of the AIS Football Program.

The players were selected from training camps throughout 2013, the NTC Challenge in December and a final selection camp in January.

Overall there were six players from the Football NSW Institute Under 16s side and five from the Football NSW Institute Under 15s.

Football NSW Institute Under 16s coach and former AIS graduate Craig Foster was delighted with the news.

“This is testimony to the work undertaken at Football NSW in recent years, especially the value of selecting technically proficient players and working along sound developmental guidelines without reference to results at younger ages.

“There is much work ahead to increase the quantity and quality of player production, but this is another important step.

“The unusually high number leaves us undermanned, however, and I look forward to welcoming new players into this season's group.”

Football NSW Institute Under 15s coach Milan Blagojevic shared similar views with Foster and praised the development pathway system.

“Whilst surprising to have so many younger players taken into the AIS it is great to see their hard work and dedication rewarded like this.

“It is also a measure of the success of the Football NSW Institute program from its very beginnings with the first Skilleroos U/12s squad in 2011.

“The players have taken their next step in their development and I wish them all the best for the future.”

Football NSW AIS PLAYERS:

· Daniel Arzani

· Malcolm Ward

· Peter Kekeris

· Solomon Monahan-Vaiika

· Henry Davies

· Perry Fotakopoulos

· Joe Caletti

· Daniel Maskin

· Jackson Bandiera

· Zachary Speth

· Kosta Petratos

The interesting thing is that 11 players were selected, assuming they offer 17 or 20 players scholarships? which is a AIS record(33 Years) =d>

So either FNSW are finally getting there act together in youth development or the standard from the rest of the states has dropped? Only time will tell which is the true factor.

Its also interested because supposedly they are the first batch of the SAP/Skillaroos Programs too.

And they are coached by the one and only Craig Foster maybe his not a pretender after all? :d

The 11 players is a record for a single intake but that's really only because the intake numbers has changed. In the past there would be a squad of up to 28 players but they would come in over 2 years. This year all of the previous scholarship holders have been moved on (because their too old for the next AFC U16s) so there were 24 scholarships available rather than the usual 12-15. I know in past years there have been a lot more than 11 NSW players at the AIS, recently there were 14 in 2009 and 13 in 2007 but they didn't all begin their scholarships at the same time.

Although Victoria won the last NTC, I'm not surprised that NSW and QLD have the bulk of the players. They won these age groups in Coffs and I thought they played the best football at the NTC as well. Victoria relied heavily on scoring early and then holding on to that lead and counter attacking. They played some good football but I thought they became more preoccupied with the result as the week progressed and became conservative once gaining a lead. Their goalkeepers were excellent and deservedly have been selected. They had one boy who was very dominant in midfield and did the job of 2 players but I believe he is the one on the radar of Liverpool so perhaps he declined the AIS trial. I know there were 2 players who declined trials but I don't know who they are or what state they're from.
