+xCongratulations England.
The better team won on the day.
Australia might have been effective over the early rounds, but faded when it counted.
Gday DC,
jaszyjim - went to bed early without much expectations, just watched the rest
of the match on video. Took my little Aussie Terrier Scruf for a walk and
asked him what he thought of the team selection.
He just looked at me & laughed - he is very astute when it comes to cricket.
The selectors could learn from him.
So all those who keep quoting stats this is a wake up call.
Stats are fine, but being accumulated in the early matches means little.
You need to look at what is actually happening, which is why I have forecast doom gloom & disaster.
Firstly the selectors just got it wrong with probably 1/2 the squad, and bringing in Handscomb
with his behind the crease play was never going to work against a top attack. I posted this as soon
as I found out he was in the team.
The teams in the final are there because their top 3 bowlers were superb & their top order batsmen performed.
India & Australia are out because of the reverse of the above - except for Smith.
From the top -
Finch - out as I predicted not moving his feet & the English bowlers have worked it out - should never play
in any international matches of any sort again.
Warner - out to a good ball but hung his bat out on a angle - disappointing but will play in all formats of
international cricket.
Smith - can't believe it was mentioned to drop him - he has struggled but is one of the few players you
stick with, because you know he will come good & he did.
Handscomb - what a joke, it would be interesting to hear the rationale behind the decision to select him ahead
of Wade or M. Marsh. He should never play international again in any format.
Carey - one of the few decisions the selectors finally got right moving him to 5, but should have happened
long ago. A plucky and well deserved 46. Will be interesting to see what happens to him now?
Stoinis - generally felt by most that he shouldn't be in the team & he proved it.
If this is the best he's got, not to be played internationally again.
Maxwell - Probably his highest score but he is just a slogger with little foot movement. Batted at a time we needed
time at the crease, interesting he wasn't bowled. I've constantly criticised him and he is another that should never play
international cricket in any format again.
Starc - a great knock, similar batsman to Maxwell & with a bit of luck can score.
The rest of the bowlers batted like bowlers, including Cummins.
Bowling wise we just weren't there. We were there about's but in a semi not good enough.
NZ & England showed how to bowl at this end of the tournament & they both thoroughly
deserve to be in the final.
Overall an expected result but still disappointing.
Despite some thinking I am negative, I just want to see Australia win & if I cannot see that happening
with the team selected, I will put it out there.
There really needs to be an inquisition into the selectors as they just continually get it wrong.
I think that the most disappointing aspect of this whole cup, is the initial selection of the
squad which had so many question marks over it & in the end proved lacking.
That's all folks - jaszyjim
