We often look back at TWG with rose coloured glasses, in particular, Les Murray's place in football's hall of fame.

The truth is that the NSL was created before SBS even existed, and was doing ok before SBS' arrival..

SBS gradually gave it more and more air time, and the more airtime it gave the NSL, the further down the plughole the NSL went.  Once the NSL reached a point where SBS was the only media entity which cared about it, lavishing it with as much love and support as it could find, it effectively signalled the end of the NSL as an ongoing entity.

Any sport in Australia, the very, very last thing it wants is to be supported exclusively by a public broadcaster, because you know your place in the world when that happens.

I would add TWG an On The Ball before it,  had a very 60's feel about Football and sport in general in Australia....

Even as the population demographics changed from mostly European to more Asian and Middle Eastern from the mid 70's TWG held on to the late 50's and 60's European migrants creating a place for themselves in a foreign sporting landscape...
