That article is typical ABC ‘soccer’ bashing.
Would not really call it soccer bashing. It is a view point that is often played out.
Macarthur and the FA tried hard to have the game relocated to a safer neutral location but the Asian Governing Body refused, assuming they considered it safe enough. Huge fines and suspension from the comp was imminent if they didn't participate. So I think it was newsworthy.
During the Johnny Warren era the Socceroos were strongly encouraged (if not directed) by the Federal Government to go to play Vietnam and it was done so for political reasons. I can recall Johnny later saying the team could hear bombs going off in the background from the field.
There is a strong case for not mixing sport with politics, but it happens.
