If AFL, Rugby League, Rugby Union & Cricket didn't exist, we'd be the best in Asia. Somehow get the kids playing Football instead of the other 4 sports mentioned, would be a massive start.

But we already have 1 million kids playing football - even if the figures are bogus and its only 1/2 a million.... thats still almost the whole population of a country like Luxembourg,  who went toe to toe with Portugal and Slovakia and are in a knockout to maybe make the Euros next year.... They have an ageing population, and accounting for gender and age groups would struggle to have maybe a playing pool of 5-10 thousand players to pick from ... Funnily enough even they manage to have a football pyramid with pro/relegation amongst 5 national levels of club competition but thats another story
Other sport's participation is NO EXCUSE. We have enough players they are just not coached or developed to a sufficient level to keep up with the rest of the world....
