Lavicka made an audacious attempt to lure his Czech compatriot, former European Footballer of the Year Pavel Nedved, for a guest stint after Nedved quit Italian powerhouse Juventus at the end of last season.
But Nedved made clear his retirement was to spend more time with his family and declined Sydney's offer.
Guest players are not permitted beyond round 23 or in the finals, and with the maximum of nine games allowed the window for bringing a player in is shrinking fast. It's believed that Sydney are budgeting around $300,000 for a stint of up to nine games.
