It's been about four years since I've played competitive football and was at my peak fitness level, but now that I'm moving into a town with a side again - I'm keen to get back in the proverbial saddle and see if my years of watching the game have in any way translated to a better understanding of it.
My dilemma, of course, is that I've put on about 15kgs in the intervening years and I don't think I'm quite up to playing at the level I did in my heyday. Does anyone have any fitness tips for somebody not quite ready to launch into 45 minute runs and doesn't have access to a gym?
I seem to remember Andre Gumprecht had quite a good article in Four-Four-Two about it back in January or February - but I've somehow managed to lose that particular issue.
So, any tips? :-k

In the past week I've started a weights regime designed for me by a personal trainer, and I've picked up a rowing machine, cross trainer, and exercise bike to go with the bench press and free weights down in what was a rather sparse 'gym' downstairs. In addition to the workout I get from that, I walk two to four kilometres a day to get to/from work (dependent on weather). I'm hoping that'll start to show some results soon, lol.
