Celtic rumours: McDonald out, Giroud in? Celtic striker Scott McDonald has been linked with a £4million move to Wigan in January - although the fee may not be paid until the summer.
Wigan, who are currently 14th in the Premier League, attempted to sign the Australia international on the summer deadline day but were unsuccessful. McDonald has scored 12 goals so far this season (assuming his tally against St Mirren at the weekend is recorded as two) but has not been an ever-present.
According to the Evening Times, Wigan boss Roberto Martinez wants to sign McDonald on loan in January ahead of a permanent deal in the summer - which would make sense for the English side as they wouldn't be financially committed until they knew whether they had secured their Premier League status for another season.
However, unless the Celtic board are thinking of handing Tony Mowbray a sizeable transfer kitty, it's not unreasonable to assume a deal in January would be far more beneficial from the seller's viewpoint. Rumours suggest Mowbray is eyeing-up 23-year-old striker Olivier Giroud, who currently plays for Tours in the French second division, so perhaps the cash would be welcome.
While Scott McDonald has a fairly decent scoring record since joining from Motherwell for just £600,000 in the summer of 2007, it's not hard to imagine the sale being made in order to generate cash - the difference between £600,000 and £4,000,000 is hard to miss and would easily cover the £2million Giroud is estimated to be worth.

Money would be the sole motivating factor as he would miss out on regular European football.
