ROBERTO Mancini has made a shock £7m move for Manchester United and Chelsea flop Juan Sebastian Veron.

Manchester City have tried to lure the 34-year-old midfielder back to English football from Argentinian club Estudiantes, where he started his career.

Eastlands boss Mancini managed Veron for two years at Inter Milan, from 2004-06, when the player was on loan from Chelsea, and he wants a player he trusts to help him lead the team.

Veron’s agent Miguel Pires confirmed the offer that has been turned down for now. Pires said: “I was very surprised with this proposition. Mancini has called the player, and me as well, but I said sincerely that Veron is very happy and grateful at being back at Estudiantes and it is very complicated to leave at this moment.”

Veron joined United in 2001 from Lazio for £28m, but he failed to make a success at Old Trafford. He was then signed by Claudio Ranieri at Chelsea, but again left after a disappointing spell.

That has not deterred Mancini, and a meeting is expected this weekend between the player and the board at Estudiantes.

City, plus United, Arsenal and Chelsea are also being linked with the Borussia Dortmund’s £20m-rated Serbian Neven Subotic, with United lining up the 21-year-old centre-back as a potential replacement for Nemanja Vidic, who has been linked with a move to Spain.

But last night the Serb said: “Everybody in the club knows I have a marvellous understanding with (Alex) Ferguson. ‘I am not unhappy, I am injured.”
